We got an inquiry a bit ago from a reader who got some conflicting information about a teether made by Bright Starts. So we turned to Alicia from The Soft Landing who has her thumb on the pulse of non-toxic baby gear.  She did some digging and apparently found out that the information we’d all been given initially regarding their teethers was false.  From The Soft Landing Blog:

We just completed a routine follow-up with Bright Starts (Kids II, Inc.), re-confirming the info we had previously been given for our Safer Teether Guide.  We were disappointed to receive a completely different response this time around.

Bright Starts would not confirm that the Chill and Teethe Tubes, Licensed to Drool, and Rattle and Spin Teethers were indeed BPA/PVC/Phthalate-free.  When we were told that their materials were proprietary, we urged them to provide concerned parents with at least a few options for toxin-free toys.  We just couldn’t get a straight yes or no answer.  Here is their final response to our inquiries:

“We commend you for what you are doing in providing information to parents and share your passion in wanting to ensure that all kids are safe.  In that regard, consumers can be assured that Kids II products comply with all existing and applicable U.S. and international standards for BPA and phthalates in our products.  We thank you again for your concern and for reaching out to us.”

That’s pretty disappointing on many fronts.  One being we were told by a rep at Bright Starts last year that their teethers were BPA Free.  And now the story has seemingly changed.  We’ve updated our cheat sheets to reflect this new information so make sure you continue to re-check our cheat sheets for the most up-to-date info.  We do our best to make sure we provide the right info but like we always say “Call the manufacturer and check for yourself“.  As we’ve learned now by both this situation with Bright Starts and the situation that brewed with Sassy a few months ago you can never be too sure.

Thanks to Alicia for getting to the bottom of it and for our wonderful readers who help us keep this site up to date.  We couldn’t do it without you!
