Badger Kids Sunscreen CreamWe recently published our Safer Sunscreen Cheat Sheet and in doing so, I went ahead and tried out some brands I hadn’t tried before.  You know, all in the name of fun in the sun. Badger Sunscreen was at the top of the list of sunscreens to test out.

I knew I had to try Badger’s sunscreen first since I have heard so many different things about it.  I learned about Badger by chance one day, when a friend sent me one of their lip balms. Anyone who knows me well knows my love for lip balm.

Badger is a family-run business out of New Hampshire that started out in their kitchen in 1995.  Fast forward to today, and Badger has expanded to a larger and very friendly company.  They give their employees free organic lunches!  All of their products are made of 100% natural ingredients – no chemicals.  When possible they use organic ingredients and all their products contain 60% or more organic ingredients.

Is Badger Sunscreen A Good and Effective Choice?

Badger’s Active Mineral SPF 30 Sunscreen is now one of my favorites. It is on the lighter side and goes on clear. Perfect for everyday use.

For my kids I use the Kids Mineral Sunscreen SPF 40. This sunscreen applies smooth enough to spread all over easily. While like most Badger sunscreens it has the trademark whiteness that almost all-natural mineral-based sunscreens do. I actually see this as a positive thing, because the whiteness actually helps me to see what areas of my son I’ve covered before it becomes more transparent.  So no spots missed and phantom sunburn spots to be had.

They use 22.5% Micronized Zinc Oxide in the kid’s sunscreen line which forms a physical barrier between you and the sun.

Badger has done a lot of research and has a very useful and informative FAQ section on their site that explains questions about sun protection, and why they chose Zinc Oxide.  They also have a really great explanation of micronized vs nano in their Sunscreen FAQ.  (For those of you who emailed us to say “how could you recommend XYZ sunscreen with micronized particles???” this is a great explanation as to why).

Are Badger Sunscreens Water Resistant?

What I also love about this brand is it’s naturally water-resistant. Depending on which of their sunscreens you choose they will provide 40 – 80 min of water-resistant properties. Like many of you, my kids can spend hours playing in the water, toweling off, and playing some more.

Badger sunscreen seems to withstand a great deal of wear and tear without having to re-apply.  If you’re at the beach you KNOW how much pain it is to re-coat a kid covered in sand.  Not fun!

There is no overpowering smell and due to its water-resistant nature, it stays out of the eyes and where it belongs.  It really protects well and I’ve started using it on myself as well.

Badger Sunscreens Are a Good Choice For People With Allergies and Sensitivities.

Many of the Badger products contain no gluten. Just look for the gluten-free certification on the sunscreen bottle. Badger sunscreens are also non-comedogenic which makes them a great option to wear on your face.

You don’t have to worry about nasty fragrance chemicals with Badger either. Their sunscreens contain both unscented or lightly scented options using essential oils.

Badger gets two thumbs up from SafeMama.com.
