We have compiled a list of the best solid wood cribs. Babies spend most of their little lives sleeping. It is essential to choose a safe, solid wood crib and a crib mattress that does not off-gas.
What To Look For In Safer Wood Cribs
You’ll want to look for cribs that are:
- Made from solid wood. Cribs not made from solid wood are constructed of boards and particular wood that uses toxic glues and fillers.
- Unfished wood or only treated with light, non-toxic oil like linseed oil is Best. Most paints off-gas contain many chemicals that have no business coming into contact with your child.
- If choosing a painted or varnished crib, make sure it is Green Gaurd Gold Certified. This will ensure that the crib has a higher than normal standard for safety.
- Constructed in the USA is best.
- Manufactured from sustainable wood.
- Consider a convertible crib that will grow with your baby and turn into a toddler bed.
- Lead-Free (preferred) or lead safe
- Phthalate Free (preferred) or Phthalate safe
- No VOCs or limited VOCs (volatile organic compounds, which are known to off-gas)
Register Your Childs Crib
This is an important and often overlooked step by parents. You will want to register your crib with the manufacturer—that way, you are informed immediately of any recalls or problems. Years ago, thousands of cribs were recalled due to causing finger amputations. Please, SafeMamas, register your cribs. And if you purchased your crib second-hand, check with the manufacturer on the best way to be notified of any recalls.
