We see tons of dishware here at SafeMama, and I get to the point where one dish is like any other dish and rarely am I impressed with a product. I mean, it’s dishware, right? You eat off of them, you drink out of them, end of story. As long as it’s free of toxic chemicals…..
Wrong.
Someone tipped me off to Kinderville’s dishware and I am in love. Kinderville is right on the money with their all silicone products. Everything is 100% silicone. There’s no lead, BPA or phthalates. Silicone is highly durable as well as resistant to bacteria due to its non porous nature. You can microwave it, boil it, and it’s dishwasher safe (although, I don’t recommend this, only because for some reason, anything silicone that I put in the dishwasher, takes on the taste of my detergent for some reason).
Kinderville makes three different products, dishes, cups and food storage jars (pictured above). The food storage jars are awesome because they are all silicone, so the lid forms a seal with the container when you put it on. There’s no snapping it in, or fumbling. To take it off, you simply pinch the handle on top and it’s open. These are great for little snacks on the go, or to put in a lunch box. The dishes are great for toddlers and babies just starting out. They’re shallow enough for them to scoop food out of, but high enough that you could use it for things like cereal for kids a little bit older, yet still too young to not spill a deeper plastic bowl. It’s also thick enough at the base and heavy, making it a little hard to tip over. From a mom with a toddler, it’s little things like this. Someone gets it. The cups are also great for kids just starting out with a “big kid cup” for the same reasons above. Not too deep, but not too shallow. The cups are thick making it a little harder to tip over. They’re also nice and thick for small hands. Their flexible nature also makes them fun for kids to drink out of. My husband gave my son the bright idea of making his cup “talk”, so now all we hear is a talking cup. At least he’s not dumping it on the floor, I suppose.
Get it: You can pick up Kinderville’s products directly online. They are a little bit more expensive, but they will last you forever, through multiple kids, thereby saving you money and creating less waste. And when you’re done with them, you can pass them on to someone else.

Kinderville Giveaway
We had previously done a review on Kinderville’s awesome line of products. Our personal stash is on heavy rotation. We love their stuff. It’s bright, colorful, attractive, best of all, 100% safe. Kinderville’s products are free from phthalates, BPA, lead, and nitrosamine free. Because it’s 100% silicone, it’s basically unbreakable, which is key when you have a toddler who always manages to drop his plate.
And as if their products weren’t great enough, they’ve added more great products, including bigger storage jars, freezer trays and ice pop molds. The freezer trays hold 2 ounce portions of food, which I personally find to be a more perfect size than the typical one ounce portions. I wish I would have had these when I was looking for freezer trays for making my daughters food.
The ice pop molds are also great because they require no sticks. They sport a tapered design so that your child can push up the ice pop as needed, which leaves less of a mess than an a popsicle on a stick.

Everyone loves ice pops. If you don’t, you’re weird or have sensitive teeth. I’ve had this article in my head for almost a year and never got around to posting it until now. I have actually started writing it about 13 times but was holding out to find one product and could never find what I was looking for. Ice Pop molds are an awesome way to do something fun with the kids and not to mention a good way to sneak yogurt or pureed/juiced veggies into their diet without them knowing. I’m known to sneak spinach into smoothies so why not freeze them?
But what ice pop molds are BPA Free (and PVC, Phthalate, lead free etc)? Good question. I went hunting for some kind of awesome stainless steel set but came up totally empty handed. So I found a couple that pass the test as far as plastic goes. Here are my top picks:
Kinderville Ice Pop Molds: Kinderville is one of our favorite companies. They carry a bevy of great products including squeeze up ice pop molds. All their items are made with BPA, Phthalate, PVC, and everything free Silicone that is a non-leaching material so it’s safe for use in the dishwasher, microwave and the freezer. They’re cute too! Check out Kinderville’s ice pop molds and other food storage items on Kinderville’s website.
Tovolo Ice Pop Molds: Tovolo has several different styles to pick from, star shaped ice pops, bars, etc and they’re all made of Polypropylene plastic (BPA Free #5 plastic) according to the company. What I like about these is that you can do some creative ice pop making with the cool shapes. They also carry silicone ice cream sandwich molds which look like a lot of fun too. And check out these Jewel Pop Molds! How cute! What little girl wouldn’t love a jewel popsicle ring?
Orka Ice Pops: Orka makes silicone molds in a neat twisty shape and have silicone tabs for easy removal. I can’t tell you how many times I was standing there using a butter knife trying to pry an ice pop out of its mold. Makes for a mangled ice pop and is not the safest way to remove them. Silicone with its flexible nature makes for removing super easy. They come in white and brown, which, not that it matters what color they are but the brown reminds me of ice cream so these would be great for yogurt based ice pops. I love the twisted portion too.
Lekue Silicone Ice Molds: For those who prefer “push-up” style ice pop consumption there’s an alternative for you too. These silicone molds are made in a slim cone shape, which makes for easy filling and probably a little less mess for eating. You can push the ice pop up from the bottom like those old freezer ice things we ate as kids… only this way you can make your own and skip all the food coloring.
SiliconeZone Popsicle Molds: These haven’t been available on Amazon for a while but they are neat tier shaped molds made of silicone that look neat (and big!). SiliconeZone makes a ton of freezer molds if you’re into funny shaped ice cubes too. I can’t seem to find the popsicle molds for sale online but if you run over them in a kitchen store they look like a good pick. Plus I’m partial to the molds made of silicone… for one silicone is a great alternative if you’re going to use plastic and two, easy removal is key. No one wants a repeat of my butter knife incident.
There are several others I’ve found but either I couldn’t determine the materials or the company never got back to me regarding their BPA Free status so I just listed the few I knew were safer. I found one by Norpro which had a stainless steel top and plastic receptacles, which utilizes wooden sticks, which some might find desirable but I couldn’t verify the plastic and lets face it, we don’t need to be tossing wooden sticks into the trash every day do we? So I skipped it. My dream ice pop maker, which I’ve searched for endlessly for a year, would be a stainless steel style one that had that pop out mechanism (like those old fashioned ice cube trays. Stainless steel ice cube trays exist but no ice pop molds (yet…says coming soon). I thought for sure Williams Sonoma would have something like that since its kind of a cool “retro” thing but alas, I cannot find it. If anyone does, please let me know and I’ll love you forever and ever. FOUND IT! Tickle Trunk carries Stainless Steel Ice Pop Molds – Hooray!
Low Budget Ice Pop Tip: Jam a popsicle stick into a yogurt container and freeze. Healthy, quick and you can reuse the container (as long as its not polystyrene) again. I’ve also frozen those Stonyfield yogurt tubes but those create waste so I’d opt for something reusable to save yourself some cash.
Get Your Own: You can find most of these in on Amazon (check the dishware category for the ones available), but I’d also be willing to bet you could find these at kitchen specialty stores in your area too.
SafeMama’s Banana Papaya Ice Pops
Ingredients:
2 Cups Papaya Nectar (or juice)
2 large ripe bananas
4 tablespoons fresh lemon juice
2 tablespoons plain yogurtInstructions:
In a blender, mix until smooth. Pour into ice pop molds and freeze. Voila.

Cheat Sheet: BPA Free Baby Food, Baby Food Creation and Storage Tools
Filed Under ** Cheat Sheets!, Food Safety
Having a 6 month old means I am in the midst of the baby food jungle.. starting to introduce cereals and purees, which he is really loving and doing so well on them. I’d love to say I carve time out of my day to make all my own baby food but realistically, we all don’t always have the time and need to rely on prepared baby foods. I set out to find as many safely packaged baby food as I could and interestingly enough – most of the baby food packaged in BPA Free packaging was organic. Yay! Many of these brands you can find at your local health food stores or Whole Foods. Some you can find at the grocery store (Like Sprout Organics and Plum Organics). I’ve had some luck finding brands at Babies R Us as well. So here is a cheat sheet for those of you who need a little extra help finding something right for you. I have not included baby food packaged in glass jars due to the fact that jar lids have a BPA containing epoxy. To the makers of Earth’s Best – Get with it already!

Green Blogger Soiree 2010
Filed Under Green Mama, Website News
I was bestowed the honor of hosting a green event this year before BlogHer 2010* got underway, The Green Blogger Soiree. The 3 Green Angels encouraged me to hostess this fantastic event that allowed a cross section of our powerful green community to gather and connect in a quiet setting before the madness of BlogHer began. Set at the lovely Remi Rialto in New York, we gathered about 50 green voices and a bevy of fantastic sponsors and representatives to trade tips, network, get all green n’ geeky, and put faces to the names of people we have been blogging, talking and working with for years. It was a great group of inspiring women that I was fortunate to be in the presence of.

There were so many more attendees and photos of the event so please check out the rest below (note the “cookie” river which I parked my butt next to for a good 15 minutes).

We had some amazing prizes to give away, thanks to our sponsors, and the event went off without a hitch (aside from having to lug all the parting gift bags by hand from the neighboring hotel – those were heavy!) and everyone enjoyed participating and getting to know each other. It wouldn’t have been possible without our great sponsors of course so I’d like to take a moment to thank them and briefly introduce them all to you:
ThinkBaby: ThinkBaby creates BPA, PVC, Phthalate, Icky free baby gear like bottles and feeding gear. Not to mention they just released their fabulous new ThinkSport and ThinkBaby Sunscreen! A great company with a great line of products for kids and baby. They are also the creators of the ThinkSport stainless steel water bottle for kids and adults.
Earth Mama Angel Baby: Everyone knows that being pregnant means you want nothing but the best for your growing little angel. Earth Mama Angel baby provides skin care and new mama wellness products that are 100% natural and uses Certified Organic ingredients. Firebelly Lawn Care: Firebelly offers safe and organic pest control and lawn care, is something we all struggle with. Effective and safe is what we strive for and is what Firebelly is all about. They hope to lead the way in changing the way we care for our lawns and our earth – without harmful and toxic pesticides and fertilizers. Their six step program aims to help you build your soil profile to make healthy grass and plants! A fabulous alternative to all that toxic junk.
Scotch Naturals / Hopscotch Kids: Oh how I love this line of products. I’m kind of a girly girl, so show m a bottle of nail polish and I’m happy. But what makes me happier is when that nail polish isn’t loaded with formaldehyde, toluene, phthalates and toxic ingredients. Better yet, this fun line is full of cute colors and are all totally safe and have fun colors designed for kids. They also provide a natural water based polish remover too. Perfect for those cute little girls in your life – and they have party packs!
Zoe B Organic: Zoe B was started by a green mom who cared for our planet and her family. Valerie Lecoeur designs a majority of her products and also sells trusted and tested brands like Natursutten, Kidishes and Eco Nuts. She is an innovative and trusted member of our green mom community and she’s preparing to introduce the world’s first biodegradable beach toys soon!
Swaddle Designs: Swaddle Designs offers a variety of swaddling blankets and soft accessories for baby. Swaddling is an important technique for new babies to help them feel secure and warm (without overheating them!). Swaddle Designs offers a range of soft and organic cotton blankets made with certified organic flannel. And these are soft, people. My son has already adopted it and claimed it as his own.
Orbit Baby: Ohhh Orbit Baby! How I adore thee! Orbit Baby is near and dear to my heart when I went hunting for baby gear that wasn’t doused in flame retardants and paid special attention to materials the way other companies don’t. Orbit Baby uses Oko Tek Certified fabrics and materials as well as organic and PVC free accessories. They are also implementing a recycling program for those that have outgrown their Orbit Baby. They generously offered one of their new G3 strollers as a giveaway prize to one of our lucky attendees! Love Orbit Baby!
Plum Organics: Plum Organics is a common item in our house. My kids love them and so do I! I seriously don’t know if my kids would ever eat spinach otherwise. Anyway, Plum Organics has a range of baby and toddler food that will satisfy any picky palette. Made with organic ingredients and unique flavor combination, these packets pack a punch of vitamins and minerals our growing babies need. Paired with the innovative Boon Spoon attachment these are on-the-go life savers. From baby food to training meals – delicious, healthy and wholesome is what its all about. And organic of course!
Beaba: Beaba creates a wide range of innovative baby products. You might know them best from the Beaba Babycook – the BPA Free steamer and baby food maker and accompanying accouterments like silicone freezer trays and dishware. They also create a range of toys, dishes, and gadgets like bottle warmers and potties! The best part is that they do it all in style and with really wel selected colors. I can always appreciate kid items with unique colors.
Seventh Generation: Seventh Generation, where the earth is their “baby”. In case you have been living under a rock, Seventh Generation is a pioneer in the earth friendly arena. Providing earth safe products like household cleaners that aren’t toxic for you your family, pets or the earth, as well as biodegradable diapers, wipes and household paper goods (love their paper towels for when you need to have a roll handy!). What we all love the most, perhaps, is their open policy on full ingredient disclosure.
Kinderville: Kinderville is a fabulous company that makes silicone food gear such as food storage jars, freezer trays, ice pop molds and dishware like cups and bowls. I’ve been lucky enough to check a few of their products out and I have to admit they are sturdy, colorful and fun to use. All their products are microwave and dishwasher safe and silicone is of course, BPA, PVC and Phthalate free. Kinderville is one of my top choices in dishware. Their ice pop molds are great! Kinderville has just released their newest product, divided plates!
Rhoost: I was recently introduced to Rhoost before the Soiree and now all of our attendees have the chance to check them out too. Rhoost creates stylish alternatives to childproofing tools including corner protectors and cabinet locks that don’t cramp your style. I have a review of these coming up next week. None of their products use adhesives so they don’t wreck your furniture. Safety, functionality and style… and of course BPA and PVC/Phthalate/Lead free.
The Social Studies Group: The Social Studies Group is a social media research company that has been carrying out primary and secondary research, as well as providing strategic marketing and business consulting services, for close to a decade-and-half. They have been involved with brand names that you would recognize in your kitchen cabinets, on television, etc. They offer social media research services that can add value and help pinpoint your mission as a brand. They can provide customized monitoring of your brand, your competitor, keywords and demographics. If your brands needs focus and a powerful edge against the competition, The Social Studies Group is where you should start.
Itsabelly Baby Planners: Need a baby planner? Planning for a baby can be a stressful time. There are so many questions and products to wade through that it can be immensely overwhelming. Itsabelly can help you wade through it all with their intense expertise in product safety. I recommend their services hand over fist. If you’d rather just take the first step, you can pick up a copy of their fantastic book Itsabelly’s Guide to Going Green With Baby do help you learn about greening your nursery and your baby’s new life ahead. It’s a great resource every new mother should have!
EcoStore USA: EcoStore USA, if you aren’t familiar with them yet, is a wonderful company that specializes in eco-friendly and safe cleaning products that actually WORK. I can’t say enough positive things about this company. Their passion for what they do is evident in their products and their attitude. They love their products, and you should too. I habitually use their dish soap and laundry detergent for my messy house. If you haven’t given EcoStore USA a try, I encourage it.
GreenSmart: I have to admit I was a little (ok a lot) jealous of the folks who won a GreenSmart backpack at the Green Soiree! I totally want one! GreenSmart creates eco-friendly bags (like backpacks, lunchbags, messenger bags and laptop sleeves) that are stylish, functional and of course made of eco-friendly materials like recycled PET bottles. Their NeoGreene is much more environmentally friendly than Neoprene by using 25% less petroleum, 25% less energy and completely eliminates the need to use toxin laden solvent adhesives to bind the fabrics to the Neogreene. I’m definitely on board with that!
Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families: The Safer Chemicals, Healthy Families coalition represents more than 11 million people including parents, health professionals, advocates for people with learning and developmental disabilities, reproductive health advocates, environmentalists and businesses from across the nation. This coalition is united by their intense concern over toxic chemicals in our products, our homes, our businesses and our world. We want chemical reform, stricter testing and chemical standards and we want better control over the toxic substances that are so carelessly used on a day to day basis. Join them in helping us make the changes this world and our families so desperately need.
Revolution Foods: When I got home I ran out to the store to use some Revolution Food coupons because the first thing my son did when I got home was eat the samples. Revolution Foods makes delicious organic lunch box snacks that you can feel better about sending to school with your kids. True I try to send fresh fruit and wholesome items in my sons lunch box but if you need a treat or yummy snack on the go, these are what I plan to reach for. (These would be awesome for party gift bags too). Whole grains, organic fruit, no HFCS and no artificial ickies makes this snack pass the mommy test.
Green Irene: Green Irene does so many wonderful things I don’t know where to start. They are an Eco-Consulting firm specializing in helping people green their homes and offices. Need a green contractor? Ask Green Irene. Need to find an Eco-Consultant? Ask Green Irene. Need a green makeover for your home or office? Ask Green Irene!!! And now that have expanded to cleaning products. They just launched a line of eco-friendly safe home and office cleaning products that work using plant-derived enzymes instead of toxic chemicals. They are passionate about their work and it shows.
Lunapads: Many of us have reviewed Lunapads before but if you are new to the whole “greening” your feminine care regime I encourage you to check out Lunapads. Lunapads, distributors of The Diva Cup, have a full line of reusable and stylish pads and panties. These washable cloth menstrual pads are the way forward to ditching disposable products forever. Not only better for the environment, but better for your health too. Have an eco-positive period!
Thank you to all who attended and to our sponsors for making it all possible and so eco-fabulous. I was truly thrilled to be the selected hostess and hope we can do it again soon.

*If you are currently using Dr. Browns polycarbonate bottles and would like to switch, the Dr. brown’s venting system (the internal pieces) are BPA Free and are made of polypropylene plastic. Also, they FIT and work with BornFree bottles which could be a little bit of a money saver. We were also told by another SafeMama reader that the Avent nipples also fit with Born Free bottles as well as Gerber Gentle Flows.
** SafeMama reader Melissa wrote in to let me know that Dr Browns bottle nipples fit with Green to Grow bottles. As we know once a baby is comfy with something it’s sometimes a pain to change so it’s good to know we don’t have to change everything if we don’t have to. Alicia of The Soft Landing did a more exhaustive report on what nipples fit what bottles. Read about it on her blog here.

What is Bisphenol A?
Bisphenol A is a hormone-mimicking chemical used in polycarbonate plastics (PC or identified as #7 recycling code) and resins commonly used for items such as shatterproof baby bottles. Bisphenol has estrogenic properties which, in animal tests has shown to cause a bevy of health problems such as an increase in prostate and breast cancer, uro-genital abnormalities in male babies, a decline in semen quality in men, early onset of puberty in girls, metabolic disorders including insulin-resistant (Type 2) diabetes and obesity and neurobehavioral problems such as Attention Deficit Hyperactivity Disorder. Research is showing that when plastic containers, mostly those used to hold liquids and foods, are leeching Bisphenol into the foods and liquids they are holding. Heating food and liquids with these plastics is shown to increase the leeching of this contaminate.
Many companies use this chemical in their packaging including cans, soda cans, and plastic food containers. There is a risk of absorbing this chemical through the use of containing foods and liquids but can also leech into our water systems through landfills.
Many leading experts and the FDA argue that the use of Bisphenol-a is safe to the human public but independent research HAS proven otherwise.
Excerpt from Wikipedia:
“Bisphenol A has been known to leach from the plastic lining of canned foods and, to a lesser degree, polycarbonate plastics that are cleaned with harsh detergents or used to contain acidic or high-temperature liquids.[16] Infants fed with liquid infant formula have among the highest exposures of anyone eating canned foods. Infants fed canned formula with polycarbonate bottles can consume quantities of Bisphenol A up to 13 µg/kg/day.”
