The Oh She Glows Cookbook & Healing Food

This website is evolving, and not evolving away from the core of what I love to do here, which is provide you with ready to go information in one place, yet I also want to contribute how my life has evolved with it.  As I’ve grown, along with SafeMama.com, I have become intently interested in all aspects of healthy living.  Not only do I want to avoid harmful chemicals in my life, but I want to be healthy from the inside out.  It’s part of why I chose to become a personal trainer and a health coach.

Food is a big part of my passion for health.  I love teaching that eating well helps people feel good and nourished.  Teaching people that eating more of the stuff that grows in the earth, or the sea, rather than what is made in a factory is paramount to a healthy life.  Sure, I indulge like everyone else but I know that what we eat can drastically affect how well we live.  We can heal our bodies and our lives through the kind of food we eat.

IMG_2031 (1)My son gave me a copy of The Oh She Glows Cookbook for Christmas and it’s truly a beautifully done book.  It’s not a surprise to me that it’s a New York Times Best Seller.  Surely Angela Liddon doesn’t need my review but I wanted to share it with you mainly because it’s a pretty great book. I absolutely love how it’s put together.

I’m not vegan.  Far from it actually.  However, I don’t think there is anything wrong with following a vegan diet if you’re smart about your food choices and I enjoy many vegan dishes on a weekly basis. But what I find great about this book is not that it reads like a vegan cookbook, it reads like a big selection of really beautiful and amazing ways to use healthy plant based food.

IMG_2030 (1)Beautiful full color food photography paints the pages of her recipes and makes every veggie and bean look amazingly delicious. I’ve tested a few recipes and have loved every single one. Her Roasted Rainbow Carrots are nothing short of incredible and the Marinated Balsamic and Maple Garlic Tempeh is drool worthy.  Her book begs you to try new things and incorporate them into your meals.  Can’t go wrong with vegan doughnuts either, can you? You can but these are so right.  We have been battling the flu here at my house for weeks so I busted out her Flu-Fighter Sunshine Smoothie on more than one occasion.

I have been researching a lot about how food can help us heal our bodies – I have much to learn but did you know that there are some foods that can cause inflammation? Or that certain herbs and spices can prevent illnesses?  Did you know that if your omega-6 intake is out of balance with your omega-3 intake it could cause inflammation and other problems?  (Typically Americans do not get enough Omega-3 and too much Omega-6).  I’m still learning but I think food, and the condition in which we eat it plays a major role in our overall health.

So I know this post is out of the norm but while I’m busily working on cheat sheet updates (so many coming!!!) I thought I’d share with you one of my favorite things.
