It’s World Breastfeeding Week! World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action (WABA), and breastfeeding advocates in more than 170 countries will be celebrating World Breastfeeding Week for the 19th year.  This year they are promoting their theme “Breastfeeding: Just 10 Steps. The Baby-Friendly Way” which outlines 10 steps to aide in breastfeeding success.

I’ll be the first to say that breastfeeding is hard. Some people don’t like it when women say that because they think it’s a discouragement to moms considering breastfeeding.  I think it’s quite the opposite. I think the more we are honest with one another about the challenges we face with breastfeeding the easier it will become to new moms who are better prepared knowing the hurdles they might face.  When I started breastfeeding my first son I had no idea what I was getting into.  If I had known how tough the first two weeks would be and that there was an end to the tough part, making way for the EASY part of breastfeeding I might not have “almost” given up so many times. I cried many nights wondering why I was struggling so hard only to find out that my son was supposed to be feeding that often due to growth spurts. It’s a tough process but going through it is worth it in the end for an abundance of reasons.  Part of what WABA hopes to do is educate maternity services and staff on helping new mothers successfully breastfeed.  I’ve had friends get sabotaged right in the hospital so I think it’s critical that maternity facilities encourage and aid new mothers 100% from the get-go.

Here are the 10 Steps WABA is promoting this year for World Breastfeeding Week. Every facility providing maternity services and care for newborn infants should:

  1. Have a written breastfeeding policy that is routinely communicated to all health care staff.
  2. Train all health care staff in skills necessary to implement this policy.
  3. Inform all pregnant women about the benefits and management of breastfeeding.
  4. Help mothers initiate breastfeeding within a half-hour of birth.
  5. Show mothers how to breastfeed and how to maintain lactation, even if they should be separated from their infants.
  6. Give newborn infants no food or drink other than breast milk unless medically indicated.
  7. Practice rooming-in – allow mothers and infants to remain together – 24 hours a day.
  8. Encourage breastfeeding on demand.
  9. Give no artificial teats or pacifiers (also called dummies or soothers) to breastfeeding infants.
  10. Foster the establishment of breastfeeding support groups and refer mothers to them on discharge from the hospital or clinic.

In celebration of World Breastfeeding Week, our friends at Medela would like to offer two of our SafeMama readers a GREAT prize pack. Two winners will receive:
