Go Green, Get Fit Challenge!

Mile 12 of my 2nd Half Marathon

Something you may or may not know about me is that I love to exercise. (I can hear your groans from here…) I didn’t always love to exercise, in fact I never really did much at all during my 20’s until I got tired of being overweight.  I lost 50 pounds once and managed to keep most of it off (with the exception of pregnancy gains) for the better part of the last 10 years.  Last summer, some weight was creeping back on, like it does when you’re busy and overwhelmed.  I had finally had it and decided to just go for it and do everything I could to feel as good as possible… I started spin classes and weight classes and yoga and pilates. I was at the gym almost everyday and oddly started to enjoy my “me” time.  Boot camp classes came into the picture.  Then I started doing something I said I would never do.  I started running.  A little bit.  And then a little more.  I signed up for the local 5K and started following a training plan.  “I have to run FIVE  miles for this plan????” I said to my husband (who is an avid runner) with an edge of hysteria in my voice.  I eventually did.  A good friend (Hi Sara!) told me “If you can run 5 miles you can run a half marathon.”  I laughed and rolled my eyes at the ridiculous thought.  But she promised to sign up for a race and train with me.  So I did, and we did.

As of today, I have run 2 Half Marathons and an assortment of other shorter races.  Me.  The person who said I hated running and would never ever do it.  Some people where I live see a Half Marathon as a silly distance… the kind you do on a Tuesday before work.  For others, like me, 13 miles is kind of a big accomplishment.  Especially when you don’t have much athletic ability.  I realize now that I have some athletic ability… we all do. I’m not an Olympic star or the kind of person who gets placement recognition at races. But I can do them and they force me to have a goal to continue working towards.  A reason to get out there in my running shoes and go. I feel good.  I feel strong. And I feel content having had an hour or so of time to do something for me.

Turns out, I’m not the only Green Blogger who enjoys fitness. Starting June 18, myself and about 25 or more green bloggers in the Eco Mom Alliance’s Go Green Get Fit Challenge  presented by Healthy Home Magazine, are going to come together to launch a 12 week health and wellness series where we will all blog and share our trials and tributes of getting in shape, reaching our goals, and doing it with some eco-conscious flair.  We all have a different goal in mind.  Some are working on running a 5k, some a half marathon, some Crossfit, some yoga, some walking…  My goal is to compete in my local Sprint Triathlon this August and then chose another event to work towards.

On Sunday I am going to do my first triathlon.  A “Super Sprint” 1/4 mile swim, 10 mile bike and 2 mile run, which I hope will prepare me for the race in August.  The real fun starts Monday!

My Fitness Goals for Go Green Get Fit: I hope to learn from whatever mistakes I make in my Super Sprint Triathlon this Sunday (June 17) and make improvements in the areas I need to improve…. becoming more proficient on the bike will be one of those areas.  I’d like to accomplish a swim across the lake and back.  The total distance is about 1+ mile.  Becoming a stronger swimmer is one of my main goals this summer because it’s my weakest area and I would like to eventually work myself up to an Olympic Distance Triathlon or more….  I’d also love to find some balance and incorporate more flexibility training.  I do plenty of weights but I tend to neglect stretching and rest. Finally, I need to find a race to do this Fall and sign up for it! My ultimate goal for the next year is to complete a marathon. But for this project I’ll settle for maintaining my weekly running mileage for the next 12 weeks.
