In case you haven’t heard, the Environmental Working Group (EWG) has always been a source of product analysis and has an online rating system for skin care and body care products (EWG Skin Deep Database) which has been a valuable resource for us as consumers and as conscientious shoppers. I have not always agreed with some of their recommendations and because I have high standards I can be a bit picky. However, as a starting point, especially when you don’t know what to look for, Skin Deep is an amazing place to start.
They have rolled out a new verification process for product makers. EWG has a set of standards what will qualify products to display the EWG Verified seal on their labeling. The seal will alert consumers that a product they are purchasing has gone through the EWG ringer first. I like this concept quite a bit and there are others like it but backed by the research EWG has available to them I think it will be a great way for consumers to find safer products for themselves and their family.
The types of products they will consider will be Make up, skin and body care products, baby care, nail products and hair care products. This is great news because as of now the government puts very little restriction on what types of ingredients that can be used in these products.
Deal breakers for qualification include ingredients that are known endocrine disruptors, known carcinogens, ingredients banned by the European Union and Health Canada. Products must have full transparency on all labeling. The full list of requirements can be found in this document here. Products must also be scored a 2 or less in the EWG Skin Deep Database.
I think this is a great step for helping us shop for safer products as well as a message to product makers that we don’t want this junk on our bodies or our families.
When you look up products in Skin Deep an EWG Verified seal will be listed with the products that qualify. So far over 60 products have received approval! Some brands include
