I saw these recently on The Glass Baby Bottle and had to share because I thought it was a pretty neat solution to the glass bottle vs
plastic bottle debate. Many people want the safety of a non-leaching glass bottle without the fear of shattering it. I have broken a couple of glass bottles in my day (well actually, my husband has broken them, not me) and the glass is an issue, the cost of losing one is my biggest beef. These new bottles from 5 Phases seem to have it covered with one bottle.
It works similar to those old school plastic bottles with the insert bags only instead of plastic, it has a removable 8oz glass insert, encased with a polypropylene (and therefore probably recyclable) outer bottle. The liquid sits in the glass portion and is protected by the plastic outer sleeve. I just think it’s a nice idea for those who worry about using glass. There are many other glass options of course, and they are great too, but this is definitely a new way of handling it. The price point is a little high, but in reality you don’t need that many bottles to feed a baby… especially if you primarily breastfeed and need one for when Dad takes a turn.
Get It: You can pick up a 5 Phases bottle and nipple accessories on The Glass Baby Bottle. Tell them I said hi!

Cool Find: Bamboo Reusable Water Bottle
Filed Under Eco-Mama, Food Safety, product finds | 8 Comments
My husband sent me a link to this recently and I had to share it. I’m always posting about the newest water bottle that I fond and this certainly, is no exception. So far the only glass water bottle I am aware of (there may be more) is the great one by Life Factory which I reviewed a while ago. I still like it and use it often. But the Bamboo Bottle is a little different and has a very interesting sustainability effort behind the brand so I thought it was worthy of a mention here on SafeMama.com
As you may very well know, glass is one of the safest materials to use when it comes to liquids because whether you put ice cold or steaming hot in contact with it, it will not leach toxins like plastics can. SO using it for a reusable water bottle is brilliant – though that always comes with it’s own challenges. What I thought was really cool is the removable bamboo sleeve that fits over it. The Bamboo acts like an insulator so you can actually use this for hot liquids and I imagine it insulates against the bottle sweating (though I don’t know if it does, I haven’t actually seen on of these in person). The bamboo also protects the glass from breaks.
All the materials are recyclable and/or from renewable sources so it’s a nice way to eliminate the plastic water bottles from your life. Who needs em? Plus it’s pretty stylish I think.
They aren’t available until 2011 so you won’t find one of these in your Christmas stocking (but oh how I would love that) – but you can pre-order one when then come available again. They retail for $25.

Cool Find: BuggyGuard Retractable Stroller Lock
Filed Under product finds, Product Reviews | 4 Comments
Sometimes I get a sample in the mail of a kid gadget and my first thought when I see it is “Why on earth would I need this?”. Let’s face it, there are a lot of inventions and kid gear out there that we just don’t need. However, sometimes I go about testing those things anyway to give them the benefit of the doubt and am surprised at how useful or nice to have, an item is. This is how I felt about BuggyGuard. In tandem with testing the BuggyGuard out on a recent trip to Disney World, I was also product testing a fancy higher end stroller that I had some worries would get walked off with. Not that that has happened to me personally… but having lived in cities in the past, I have a basic instinct to protect my belongings (And let’s not even talk about how my very expensive wallet was stolen out of my own car IN MY DRIVEWAY last July).
So when I go to places like Disney World or public parks where you need to ‘park” your stroller and go do the fun things with the kids, I am always in the back of my head slightly worried about someone walking off with my stuff. Cut back to my recent family vacation to Disney where I brought along the BuggyGuard to check it out.
It’s very simple to use and set up and use. You press a small button on the side to release the 4 1/2 foot cable which is thin enough to weave around most spaces. I’d thread it through the back tires and lock it up when visiting attractions at the park. It worked great to lock 2 strollers together so when park employees move your strollers (they do that at Disney)they at least stay together. They tend to not move them too far if they’re hard to move so you don’t spend as much time searching for the relocated stroller.
The BuggyGuard utilizes a 4 digit customizable locking mechanism that is easy to set and reset (if you know how). Overall, cute product that works well for travelling. It’s a “nice to have” item that would make a cute gift.
Get One! BuggyGuard comes in 4 animal shapes and you can find them online in a few major retailers. Visit BuggyGuard.com for more locking ideas and to find a retailer.

Non-Toxic Halloween: Luna Organics Face Paints
Filed Under Green Mama, product finds, Skin Care | 4 Comments

Luna Organics Organic Face Paints
I’m sure you’ve been there… at a birthday party or a festival and the kids want their faces painted like a tiger or a butterfly. They sit patiently for what seems like the first time ever, while you twist and writhe inside thinking about the awful ingredients being put all over their face. That stuff can’t be good right? Who makes it? What’s IN it? Lead? Phthalates? Then Halloween rolls around and you need to paint whiskers on little Lisa and make Tony into a vampire. Now what?
Luckily there is an option now. I discovered Luna Organics through The Glass Baby Bottle a while ago and I’ve been meaning to point it out to my lovely readers. Luna Organics is a com
pany started by a mother of two little girls who wanted safer play makeup for her daughters. Based in New Hampshire, they create a variety of kits that are perfect for face painting, costumes, play time or sporting events. They are made with natural ingredients and contain not parabens or toxins, and use mineral micas for pigments that are not micronized. Luna Organics is a signer of theCampaign for Safe Cosmetics as well.
Each kit is about $14-$20 but you get enough make up to last you several applications. All the colors come in BPA Free containers for safe storage. The costume kits come with a couple of colors, white face powder applicators and a storage tin. You can choose from several costume options like Clown, Bunny, Animal Medley or choose their Rainbow Kit and get creative.
Get It! You can pick up Luna Organics Face Painting Kits from The Glass Baby Bottle and get them in time for Halloween!

Lunchbots New Stainless Dishware
Filed Under product finds | 2 Comments

I’m always looking for dishware and kitchen items that are not made of plastic. True there are lots of BPA and PVC free options available but I think alternatives like stainless steel and glass or wood tend to have a longer life and less risks of plastic leeching issues.
I discovered LunchBots last year when I was looking for safer lunch box options (new cheat sheet for that coming soon).. what I loved is that they were stainless steel and they fit an average sized sandwich. There were plenty of bento box style stainless options but none that fit an actual sandwich.
Now they have this great stainless kids dish set that includes an 8″ plate, a 5″ kid-sized bowl which looks perfect for cereal and oatmeal, and an 8 oz. mug. I think these are really sharp looking and practical (no breaking!) for kids. What an adorable set!
Get It: You can order online from their website LunchBots.com – set retails for $25

Sonny & Reed Teething Necklaces for Mom (Giveaway)
Filed Under Giveaways Coupons, product finds, Product Reviews | 106 Comments
I really love dual purpose products when it comes to parenting – it just tickles me when something meant for one thing has a totally separate use. I also try my best to be somewhat stylish on a day to day basis. I know it’s hard – believe me there are days when I am appalled that I dropped my son off at school having not showered in two days (I’m admitting that because I know I’m not the only one!). But now that my second child is no longer an infant requiring round the clock feeding, I can actually put myself together and look somewhat cute. Which is why I adore this new teething necklace from Sonny & Reed.
They contacted me and I was all for checking out their product because it’s jewelry and you all know how much I loved that teething bling necklace I reviewed earlier this year. So I was super psyched to check it out. This is a really great piece. It’s made with an FDA approved acrylic (though they aren’t spilling on what exactly it is) and have assured me is its BPA, PVC, Phthalate and Lead free. The beads are large and do not pass through the “choke tube” so no worries on that front. They are really quite stylish while being simple and make a fabulous statement. They are solid beads and have tiny “nibs” on one side to soothe baby’s gums while they chew. So useful! Anyone who’s ever had a teething baby on their hip will tell you that always having something around for them to chew on is a life saver. Better it be a stylish necklace than your finger.
Here’s the part where it pains me to say that the sample I received is GREAT, but my son is kind of past that whole phase where it would be useful. He’d much rather be crawling on the floor than chewing on my necklace (that makes me so sad!). So, I am going to offer up the sample I got for a giveaway to one of you.
(I can assure you I haven’t worn it, other than to try it out for length and style – and for the photo. I have also not let me drooly kid chew on it.) I packed it back up and make the painful decision to give it away to someone with a teething baby who needs some style. Is that you??
Get It: If you can’t stand waiting to see if you won a giveaway then I urge you to go to Sonny & Reed’s website and pick one up for yourself. They would make an excellent gift too. They come in three colors: The clear (which is what I am giving away), a pretty blue and black (I think the black is my favorite).
WIN IT!
You can have my Sonny & Reed Teething Necklace sample! I promise I don’t have cooties and that no one has ever chewed on it. It’s made with the clear beads so you can coordinate it with anything!

Innobaby Din Din Smart Stainless Steel Bus Platter
Filed Under Food Safety, product finds | Comments Off
I stumbled on this today and wanted to share because I think it’s cute and functional and a nice alternative to hunks of plastic. Innobaby is a company founded by two mothers that have developed some cool gear for babies and toddlers including silicone baby bottles, BPA/PVC Free food storage, organic crib sheet toppers, stroller seat toppers and food storage. Browsing their site I found their adorable food tray called Din Din Smart Bus Platter.
It’s divided into sections like a cafeteria food tray but its shaped like a cute little bus. It’s made entirely out of food grade stainless steel so serving hot foods on it will not result in leaching worries. The little compartments make learning to self feed a little easier so that food isn’t sliding around or off the plate. It’s also dishwasher safe and probably pretty darn durable. I thought this was a great meal time solution for both the non-toxic worry and the “make mealtime more fun” tactic. What kid wouldn’t like sampling veggies from the little compartments? (Probably my kid, but I’ll try anything)
Get It: You can pick up this cute food tray on their website Innobaby.com!

I know many of you are really itching for Spring and Summer to arrive despite the weather we’ve all been having. (Even in Florida its been in the 40′s – not ice pop weather!) I was going to hold off until a more appropriate time to post this but it’s just too good! A while ago I did a Summer Series on Safer Ice Pop Molds. Despite finding bevy of great options I had said my dream ice pop maker would be stainless steel yet I never found any.
Well thanks to a reader tip that dream is now a reality. The Tickle Trunk, where I discovered stainless steel ice cube trays, finally has stainless steel ice pop molds for sale for $35.00. It’s a great design too. The set comes with a stand and 6 round ice pop molds… so you can takeout one single ice pop and then refill as needed. The lid or “base” of the ice pop where the stick goes through has a silicone ring to help keep the sticks in place nice and straight.
So there you go.. stainless steel, BPA, PVC and phthalate free ice pops! Woo! Pick these up at The Tickle Trunk.

I don’t know about you, but with this winter being particularly harsh and full of snow snow and more snow, I do miss a good hearty soup. Because cans are lined with BPA, soup has been ousted from our house, that is until now. My husband went grocery shopping last night and brought home some Dr. McDougall’s ready to serve soup, in cartons. He noticed that they were in BPA free containers, which is why he picked them up (my husband, he is catching on. Smart man, that one). Most of the soups that come freeze dried in the cups, I don’t know if you’ve tried them, but yuck. They lack in flavor, and are just not the same. Of course, you could just make up a large batch of your favorite soup and freeze it, but if you’re pressed for time, or you don’t feel like making every single type of soup in existence to keep on hand, this is a really good alternative, and the taste, according to him, is pretty good.
On top of the containers being BPA free, the soup is All Natural, unlike the preservative laden canned counter parts, and the containers are a nice size. You could easily get 2-3 bowls of soup out of one container. I’m glad that he spotted it when he did, because it looks as if winter is going to be here forever, and I am freezing! Good Job, Mr. SafeMama!
Get it: You may be able to find the new cartons in your local grocery store , or you can order it by the case directly from their website. (tip: ask a friend if they want to split the cost with you so that you don’t have too much, and it’ll cut your cost as well).

Kind Signs Stroller Signs!
Filed Under product finds, Product Reviews | 2 Comments
Having a baby again, I had forgotten how much other people love babies. I cannot go to a store without people swooning and goo goo gah gah-ing at my handsome little guy. Not that I blame them. He is utterly adorable. And if I forget to put on his socks? People can’t resist coming up to touch his little piddies. I can’t keep my hands off his feet either. But I’d rather not have strangers touching my baby when I’m out and about. That sounds like I’m a grump. But in reality, there’s germs, illnesses, flu’s and all kinds of icky things he isn’t immune to that could be lurking on the kind hand of a stranger in the produce aisle. I’m also the type of person who has trouble asserting myself in situations where I’m uncomfortable.
I found MamaBears.com one day surfing the Internet and I was so excited to find their adorable Kind Signs. Kind Signs are a silicone “sign” that says “Your Germs Are Too Big For Me, Please Don’t Touch”. You can hang them on your stroller, carrier, shopping cart, cribs, diaper bag or anywhere your little cutie is sitting to gently let people
know you’d rather they not touch your baby. Each sign is large enough for people to read easily and is a nice way of saying “hands off”. The signs are made of silicone which is BPA, PVC and Phthalate free so if baby happens to get his mitts on it’s not the end of the world.
They come in Orange, Blue or Pink and are only about 8 bucks. I keep mine in my diaper bag so I can easily whip it out while I’m out shopping with my little man. I’ve not had any trouble with strangers touching him since (but we still get the goo goo gah gah’s) and I’m a happier mom for it.
GET IT: You can order your own Kind Sign from MamBears.com!
