I had the distinct pleasure to have been able to try out two different types of eco-friendly “disposable” diapers over the last week. A great company, Better Baby Bums, which was founded by two mothers who were passionate about finding safer and more earth friendly ways of caring for their children. They opened Better Baby Bums to sell all the products that they discovered. From diapers to bottles and baby toys, they offer a nice selection of unique products.
The first brand of diapers were the Bambo Nature brand which is produced in Denmark (I couldn’t find any English on the packaging!) The core of the diaper is made with corn starch (instead of that weird chemical gel stuff) and completely biodegradable. These have a very “Pampers” appeal to them with cute little pink bunnies on the waist and have cinched leg seams so prevent leaks. They also feature a watermark on the front so you can see when the diaper has been soiled. These fit my 7 month old great and we had zero leaks.. and believe me, my kid can leak through a diaper faster than a speeding bullet. Never had such a leaky child! These diapers are also chlorine free and they use an oxygen delignification process in combination with hydrogen peroxide or ozone to whiten it. No more brown diapers! For those who are attached to their old Pampers diapers this would be a great alternative – they’re very comparable and work just as well, only better because they aren’t going to petrify in a landfill.
The second brand we tried out were 100% compostable diapers made by Broody Chick. I think these are so cool. Instead of waiting for a diaper to biodegrade, these you can put right into your compost pile. These are free of plastic and chlorine and use a plant based gel in the absorbent core. I really really loved these diapers and not just for their eco-friendly features. They fit my baby great and I was really surprised at the softness -which is my peeve with most diapers. They’re soft, they fit great and we had no leaks. Not one. I also really loved that they were plain. Does every diaper on the market need some ridiculous cartoon character on it? Your kids are peeing in them not playing with them! Yay for plain diapers! Everything about Broody Chick Diapers is eco-friendly… from the recycled box, to the compostable bag they come wrapped in.

SafeMama Review: Greenbaby Gifts
Filed Under Green Mama, Product Reviews | Comments Off
One of the things that was indispensable to me when I was pregnant was the things that were given to me by my parent friends. Not typical shower items, but things that were thoughtful, practical and most of all, tried and true favorites of theirs. Being a new parent is overwhelming and there are so many little things you don’t think about. Now that I’ve got a little more handle on things and infant-hood is behind me, I like to try and pay it forward and get something that are things that I can’t live without, along with essentials. And while I try not to push my greener lifestyle on people, I can’t in good conscience give someone something that I wouldn’t use on my own child. Which means that most of the stuff I do give has to be greener. And while there’s no doubt that the buzz phrase of 2008 will most likely be eco-friendly, a lot of people still turn to conventional baby products, because organic is either too expensive or hard to find, necessitating several trips or online purchases.
Enter Greenbaby Gifts. Oh how I wish I would have known about this even just a few short months ago when I was on the hunt for a more natural and organic gift basket. Owner Cynthia McGregor just wanted what was best for her baby and much like myself, found herself frustrated when she couldn’t find something affordable all in one spot.
Green baby gifts has incredible looking gift baskets for any budget and all of the items are either organic or made from sustainable eco-friendly fabrics. All items are hand picked and thoroughly researched and then packaged in a beautiful reusable recycled box that is perfect for keeping baby momentos. These boxes are gorgeous and the products inside are equally as gorgeous and well made. When I first opened the box I was awestruck. I’m definitely keeping these on my list of SafeMama approved products.

SafeMama Review: Dapple Dish Liquid
Filed Under Eco-Mama, product finds, Product Reviews | Comments Off
I came across Dapple Dish Liquid somewhere in my endless hours of surfing (post toddler bedtime of course!) and I thought to myself, that’s brilliant! I mean, there are lots of products for your baby’s body, and special detergents for their clothes, why not something for their dishes? And why didn’t I think of that?
Oh yeah, I was in a groggy haze from having a baby.
Of course there are safer dish soaps and dishwasher detergents, but I’m still leary of a lot of them, and especially the dishwasher detergent. Dapple is the first ever dish detergent made especially for your baby’s dishes. I wish I would have had this stuff during the early days, when I spent a good hour every night scrubbing the endless supply of (polycarbonate) bottles we had. It’s amazing how fast the build up happens on your bottles. Even in the dishwasher.
While we’re out of the bottle phase, for the most part, I decided to give the soap a whirl on my toughest job that I come across frequently. Dried on scrambled eggs. I don’t think there’s a single dishwasher that I’ve seen that gets caked on scrambled eggs off of a pan. So I put the dish soap to the test. And it came off with ease.
I only had a chance to try the dish soap, but it passed my test. It lathers nicely, doesn’t smell offensive, and rinses clean. Aside of the fact that it’s completely safe for your baby, and biodegradable, I don’t think you could ask for much more than that. Except for maybe a full time live-in maid to help you wash all of those dishes.
Get It: You can purchase Dapple directly from their website DappleBaby.com. They make both dish liquid and dishwasher detergent.

Product Review: Bambu Dishware
Filed Under Eco-Mama, Green Mama | 3 Comments
All this BPA news is a real downer, so I thought, in light of it being Earth Week and all, I’d do something more fun and review some really cute earth friendly dishware I recently bought. As we all know, or may have read, products made of bamboo are a sustainable and earth friendly alternative to plastic or paper which takes up tons of resources and then sits in landfills. I decided to give the bowls and utensils made by Bambu a go, to see if they’d hold up to my 2 year old and my busy life. I’ve been hesitant to buy wood or bamboo for fear that they would be a pain, since you can’t run them in the dishwasher. And as any busy mom knows, anything that needs hand-washing is a pain no matter how you look at it. But I said “Kathy, for the love of the earth, just give it a shot.”
I have to admit I am pretty attached to them. I opted for a Berry Bambu Bowl and a set of smooth ended utensils. The bowl is entirely made of coiled and smooth bamboo and then sealed on the outside with food safe lacquer. It’s deeper than some of the traditional kid bowls, but for us, that was a bonus. It fits more fruit, cereal, or snacks and washes up easy. I hand wash all our sippy cups so I just wash it quick with those and let it dry. The nice part about that is it’s not sitting in the dishwasher waiting to get cleaned. I have a clean bowl, at the ready, all the time.
The utensils worked out well too. The spoon and bowl are my son’s favorite to use daily. The fork had a small splinter, which I fixed myself with a little sand paper, and it works great. My only critique would be that the tines are a little chunky so its hard for him to get food on it… but this would probably work better with time or with an older child. And they look nice. No cheap plastic utensils getting stuck in the dishwasher. I’m a convert. They’re durable, made of sustainable materials and look great. And no worries over BPA or phthalates or any plastic yuckiness.
I purchased mine at The Soft Landing!

Toys R Us Introduces Natural Toys
Filed Under Eco-Mama, Green Mama, Toy Safety | 2 Comments
We just got word that Toys R Us is now carrying some natural wood toys. They claim that these toys are forest-friendly and bear the Forest Stewardship Council’s seal of certification.
While they only carry about a half dozen of these toys, they’ll probably add more as time goes on (and if they’re popular enough). Toys R Us also claims the items are chemical-free and crafted from replenishable materials.
The toys range in price from $9.99-24.99. There’s not much information there yet (on their site), as every description is pretty much the same marketing blurb.
Once we get more info – and maybe some independent reviews – we’ll let you know.

Alternative Teether: Camden Rose Maple Wood
Filed Under Green Mama | 1 Comment
We’ve already determined that there are in fact safe, affordable teethers made without BPA, PVC and phthalates on the market. But there are other alternatives to plastic that are safe and effective as well. A reader brought a teether to
my attention that I thought was a great addition to the alternative teether category. Camden Rose makes a non-toxic Maple wood teether, created in a smooth ring shape for easy gripping by little hands. The teether is finished with natural beeswax and is made in the USA. Sounds good to me! Where to find it: Shop for it online at either Palumba or Amazon.com

Product Review Series: California Baby
Filed Under paraben free, Phthalates Info, Product Reviews, Skin Care | 4 Comments
I’ve long wanted to sing the praises of California Baby® products. I’ve tested a number of other lines and I keep going back to my “old faithful”, California Baby. I wanted to start my series of reviews of phthalate-free and paraben-free products with this line since I’ve used a number of their products extensively, and when I saw another article about phthalates in baby shampoo in the Palm Beach Post last weekend, I felt I should get the ball rolling. What better place to start then with the line I’ve used since the day my son was born.
California Baby provides baby/kid bath products as well as sun protection, diaper care, bug protection…. all eco-friendly, cruelty-free, paraben-free and phthalate free. And they work. They have expanded their line to include freshening spritzers, essential oils and mother care too.
