In my quest for anything non-plastic I learned about CaliBowls from The Soft Landing. I ordered some to try out in green and blue. I was bent on replacing the plastic Munchkin bowls we’d been using which had become a hassle. Since you can’t put hot food in plastic I’ve been using my regular glass bowls. This is fine generally but my son is 4 and when he eats things like cereal or rice, it gets all over the table.
Then I got my CaliBowls and the clouds parted. The sun shone through the trees and the heavens glowed. Ok not really but my mess occurrences decreased dramatically. Originally I thought they were just good looking ceramic bowls. But actually they are much more genius than that. They have an angled lip around the top of the bowl so food falls back in that would otherwise fall over the edge onto the table or your kid. They are also great for serving dips and salsas!
These are a great alternative to plastic… dishwasher and microwave safe and since they are ceramic there is no concern over BPP, PVC or Phthalates. I’d recommend them for slightly older children who are past flipping things upside down or on the floor (Let’s just say my 1 year old doesn’t get the privledge) or for adults. My husband uses them all the time for salsa or ice cream. Thumbs up!
Get Them: You can pick up these great bowls at The Soft Landing and they come in an olive green, light blue or dark red and come 2 in a set. A worthy investment! CaliBowl also makes a BPA, PVC and Phthalate free plastic suction bowl for the little ones.

Modern Twist Placemats: Functional, Stylish & Safe
Filed Under Food Safety, Product Reviews | 3 Comments
I had not heard of Modern Twist until recently and was eager to check out their products. Modern Twist creates stylish chic placemats, coasters, and other fun items like drink markers – all made of hand silk-screened silicone. You can choose from botanical or modern patterns that are subtle and delicate but have a very chic look.
The sheer soft silicone enhances your table top and is very pleasing to the touch. Best of all they are very practical.. no more washing and ironing cloth mats. These silicone mats wipe or sink rinse clean. You can also fold, flop or mess them up all you want and they will flatten out wrinkle and crease free every time. I tried.. they’re still flat! Since they are made from silicone they are free of BPA, PVC, lead, and phthalates. They come in recycled and recyclable packaging too!
They carry a really creative and fun Kidz Box that comes with one silicone doodle mat (14″ x 16″) and 6 dry erase markers so your little buddy can color or doodle the same mat over and over… which is whats been going on here for 2 days. I’ve washed the doodle mat about 15 times and it shows no signs of wear or staining. We also received their cute owl placemat which my son decided to color on with a marker of his own choosing (not the marker they provided) and it did stain a bit but I think it was partially my fault since it sat overnight with marker on it before I got to cleaning it. Lesson learned – use the dry erase markers or clean it off right away f you use a washable marker. I don’t think the marker my son used was washable (we have a zillion markers in this house) and the other mat he’s doodled on 15 times shows no staining whatsoever.
The Kidz Box would make a very unique gift for any kid – especially those kids that have everything. The placemats or coasters or drink markers (which double as napkin rings) would make a terrific hostess gift instead of the usual bottle of wine. The Kids Placemats would also work great for kids at restaurants or visiting friends and relatives… roll it up with the markers and bring it along to keep them busy.
These are really cool … I kind of want a set of the coasters for myself. They’re going on my wishlist!
Get Them: You can order any of the Modern Twist items from their beautiful website Modern-Twist.com or find a retail location near you!

Lunchbots New Stainless Dishware
Filed Under product finds | 2 Comments

I’m always looking for dishware and kitchen items that are not made of plastic. True there are lots of BPA and PVC free options available but I think alternatives like stainless steel and glass or wood tend to have a longer life and less risks of plastic leeching issues.
I discovered LunchBots last year when I was looking for safer lunch box options (new cheat sheet for that coming soon).. what I loved is that they were stainless steel and they fit an average sized sandwich. There were plenty of bento box style stainless options but none that fit an actual sandwich.
Now they have this great stainless kids dish set that includes an 8″ plate, a 5″ kid-sized bowl which looks perfect for cereal and oatmeal, and an 8 oz. mug. I think these are really sharp looking and practical (no breaking!) for kids. What an adorable set!
Get It: You can order online from their website LunchBots.com – set retails for $25

New ThinkBaby Separates (& Giveaway)
Filed Under Food Safety, Giveaways Coupons, Product Reviews | 244 Comments

I’ve been a fan of the ThinkBaby company for some time and feel like a broken record when it comes to singing their praises. I use their ThinkSport stainless water bottle myself and have been using their ThinkBaby Feeding Set for over a year. I try to eliminate unneeded waste in my day to day and packing my son’s preschool lunchbox is no exception. ThinkBaby’s dishes are something I use on an almost daily basis. I use the separates for snacks for the park, in my son’s lunchbox, for the beach, for serving baby food – they have endless uses. They are made with food grade stainless steel and insulated with BPA Free polypropylene plastic. The parts come apart for easy washing too.
The ThinkBaby Feeding Set comes with a Soup Bowl, a Baby Bowl, a Bento Box, a handled Cup (which is my son’s favorite cup of all time), and a spoon and fork. All bowls and boxes come with a safe plastic lid for storage. I’ve tossed a bowl full of grapes or fruit in my diaper bag on more than one occasion and never once had to clean sliced kiwis out of my bag.
ThinkBaby has just released a few of their feeding items as separates, which is awesome because I have said more than once that I could use an extra bowl or bento box. They come in their traditional ThinkBaby orange or in a new fabulous blue color. The blue option says “think” on it for the big kids. The blue is my personal favorite!

Kinderville Giveaway
Filed Under Giveaways Coupons | 119 Comments
We had previously done a review on Kinderville’s awesome line of products. Our personal stash is on heavy rotation. We love their stuff. It’s bright, colorful, attractive, best of all, 100% safe. Kinderville’s products are free from phthalates, BPA, lead, and nitrosamine free. Because it’s 100% silicone, it’s basically unbreakable, which is key when you have a toddler who always manages to drop his plate.
And as if their products weren’t great enough, they’ve added more great products, including bigger storage jars, freezer trays and ice pop molds. The freezer trays hold 2 ounce portions of food, which I personally find to be a more perfect size than the typical one ounce portions. I wish I would have had these when I was looking for freezer trays for making my daughters food.
The ice pop molds are also great because they require no sticks. They sport a tapered design so that your child can push up the ice pop as needed, which leaves less of a mess than an a popsicle on a stick.

We’re giving a way three sets of Kinderville’s products to ONE lucky winner. This prize includes:

Review: ThinkBaby Feeding Set
Filed Under Food Safety, Green Mama, Product Reviews | Comments Off
As a mom to a 3 year old attending preschool, food storage came to the forefront of my focus lately. He’s already outfitted with a safe lunchbox, but I wanted to make sure the food inside was wrapped safely, while being reusable to reduce waste. I got the chance to try out the new ThinkBaby Feeding Set and they have developed a great set that has a permanent home in our container repertoire.
The Thinkbaby Set is all lined with food grade stainless steel while the outer durable orange covering and lids are made with polypropylene. ThinkBaby prides themselves with the level of safety all parents hope for. All ThinkBaby items are free of BPA, Phthalates, PVC, lead, nitrosamines and melamine. And I can definitely appreciate that.
The ThinkBaby feeding set includes several items, packed into a cute gift box. It includes a rectangle Bento Box with snap on lid, soup bowl and baby bowl with lids – which have come in most handy for many scenarios. I pack fruit or snacks in the bowls, or store cold pasta salads and mini sandwiches in the Bento Box for the lunchbox. I also use them to bring fruit and snacks in my diaperbag to the playground or to grandma’s house. They even include a fork and spoon, perfectly sized for little hands and mouths… and they fit right in the Bento when you’re done. My only gripe was that a standard sandwich doesn’t fit in the Bento Box but if cut up smaller it works just fine.
My favorite, and mostly due to the stage my son is at, is the cup. I was just thinking about looking for a kid sized mug for him and ThinkBaby has that covered too. The cup is a great size, and has a generous handle making it really easy for him to pick up and use without spilling.
I’ve always loved all the ThinkBaby and ThinkSport products and this set is no exception to that love. I’ll be using this for my 3 year old son andfor my new baby when he or she starts baby food – this would make a perfect baby food storage set for on-the-go. Thumbs up from SafeMama!

ZAK! Designs BPA free.
I’ve seen the character dishware sets in my local grocery store and Babies R Us and I’m sure you have too. I made a mental note to check them out, and then saw something sparkly and completely forgot about it. A quick check on google to see if I could find anything on them, turned up few results, so I contacted the company. They were very quick to respond, with their answer:
Our children’s products are all BPA free. Our plates and bowls are made from 100% melamine, which although it falls into the #7 recycling category it does not contain BPA. Our drink ware is made from polypropylene which falls into the #5 category.
We consistently test our products to ensure that we can safely guarantee them to be totally food contact safe for human use.
I hope this is helpful and we certainly appreciate your concern and interest in Zak Design products.
Given the fact that they have quite a few licensed character sets, I figured this would put parents minds at ease. We all know that there’s no amount of endless begging that occurs when kids see anything with their favorite character on it.
