In case you missed it, or don’t recall, I did a What’s In My Make Up Bag post a while ago. I don’t have a pristine natural selection of cosmetics but I try. One of the things I hadn’t found yet was a more natural option for eye liner. I don’t wear it every day but I have pretty fair coloring and need to emphasize my eyes when I can manage to. I was not blessed with full dark lashes. Anyhow, when I was in NYC for BlogHer, Joelle and I made a little detour to Sephora on our way to the convention hotel.. you know, like girls tend to do. On a whim I grabbed a little value pack of eye liner and mascara by Tarte which featured a travel sized mascara that I love and have used before, Tarte Lash Hugger. Along side it though came a Tarte emphasEYES™ eyeliner.
It didn’t occur to me until just now that it is meant for the inner rim of your eye for that “smoky” look. I don’t hardly ever go anywhere to warrant a “smokey eye” these days so I have just been using it primarily as an eyeliner. It goes on smooth and stays all day. I’d say that was a success in the realm of natural cosmetic use.
Tarte makes many of their products without the use of parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, SLS, or mineral oils. The emphasEYES eyeliner is no exception. Their products are by no means chemical free but it lacks some of the bigger players we try to avoid these days so it’s a good alternative that performs rather well.
Get It: You can purchase Tarte products and their emphasEYES eyeliner on their website or on Sephora.com. It comes in 3 colors: Black, Chocolate and Plum.
One of the things I’ve been searching for is a safer mascara. Admittedly I was hooked big time on the big orange LashBlast by Cover Girl (Cover Girl mascaras rate around a 7 in Skin Deep). Once learning about some of the icky junk in mascaras I’ve been on a holy search to replace mine with something safer. I picked up Tarte Lash Hugger Natural Mascara at Sephora on a recent trip to San Diego and have been giving it a fair go. First the good stuff. This mascara is paraben-, phthalate-, sulfate-, mineral oil-, propylene glycol-, fragrance-, and synthetic dye-free. The tube is made from post consumer recycled aluminum which is definitely an eco-friendly package compared to the usual plastic of others.
I like this mascara but I don’t love it the way I love the performance of some of the traditional ones. However, the ingredients (or lack of) is what makes me adore it. This mascara goes on pretty thin so you can go light with it or build up for a more dramatic effect. And the tube is cute… it’s purple! Functional, cute and safer that your run of the mill mascara.
