I don’t wear a ton of make up. I know there are parts of the country where women tend to wear more make up than others (*cough* Long Island *cough* and I can say that because I grew up there) and I do wear some… enough to make myself acceptable for public consumption. I do like my girlie must haves and here is whats banging around in my make up bag:
Foundation: I don’t wear a lot of it and I never really did. But as I’m getting older I have rosacea and some flaws and I just need a light overall cover to make me happy. I am using mineral foundation which I have recently read to be less than great due to breathing in particles. But I loathe liquid foundation. Hate it. So I hold my breath and hope I don’t get some funky lung disease from it. My favorite is Alima Pure Mineral Satin Matte foundation after switching from Bare Minerals when I learned that it contained Bismuth Oxychloride which can be an irritant to rosacea sufferers.
I also use SukiColor Liquid Formula Concealer in Flax (which I can’t find on their website right now) for spot treating under eye circles, zits or whatever weirdness shows up. Blends well and has a more respectable ingredients list than most commercial liquid make up.
Blush: I hide from the sun so much so that I need an extra boost (I wear hats and sunglasses all the time) so I use Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Blush in Dianthus. Dr Hauschka makes a nice blush bronzer too but the cost difference is amazing. $15 for Alima vs $30+ its an easy choice for me.
Eyes: NVEY Eco Organic Eye Shadow Palette in Palette 3. I had a palette of this before which I had gotten as a gift and it lasted me forever. So when I was digging the last of it out I decided it was a worthy investment. It’s $60. Yeah I know. But it lasted me well over a year to a year and a half. So I figure I’m spending that over a course of time on different ones anyway and this is organic. So I splurge. I also have a small Dr. Hauschka Eye Shadow Solo in Shimmering Ivory. But I may try the 4 color palettes they have next time instead of the NVEY. $44 vs $60 on that scale.
Eye Liner: I have a basic black eye liner from Sephora. Nothing green or safe about it. I need to find a better one.
Mascara: I use Tarte Lash Hugger Eco-Friendly Natural Mascara. Tarte uses better ingredients than most and avoids things like parabens, phthalates and mineral oils and is in a recycled tube. It works great… can’t complain. I tried out one of the “natural” brands at CVS and it was awful so I’ll stick with this.
Lips: My favorite topic! I don’t wear lipstick. It’s a pretty rare occasion if I do. I am a lip balm kind of girl and when I get dressed to go out (haha) I am a fan of lip gloss. Although since I started greening my make up I haven’t found too many lip glosses that do it for me. I have a million lip balms including: Badger Lip Balm in just abut every flavor but I love Tangerine and Lavender Orange, Bubble & Bee Lip Balm in both Coconut Lime and Rude Raspberry (which is Certified Organic now), a Burt’s Bees Radiance Lip Shimmer as well as a Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Lip Gloss in Sweet Pink, LuSa Organics lip balm (love) and an Earth Mama Angel Baby Lip Balm which I use at night.
Nails: I know we did a whole round up of safe nail polish but to be very honest – I hate almost all of them. They don’t stay on and yes I used them while I was pregnant if at all but my vanity is at stake here so I ave been using Zoya Polishes for my mani pedis. Zoya is Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP Free so I feel somewhat better using them.
Anyone have any eye liner or lip gloss recommendations? Hope you enjoyed the peek into my bathroom!
Someone asked me recently if I would publish a list of products I use. I was hesitant because like you, I am a work in progress and I sometimes think people expect me to have it all figured out. I don’t, but I try. So here it goes…
Giovanni Colorflage Beautifully Blonde Shampoo: Ok this stuff isn’t nirvana when it comes to ingredients, it contains phenoxythanol and a few other questionable items but its better than a paraben, phthalate ridden shampoo and it works really well. I spend a fortune on my toxic highlights (hey I’m vain ok? I like being blond!) and the last thing I want to do is ruin my expensive ‘do with lame shampoo. This claims to protect from fading and enhance blonds. So far I’m just really happy with the cleaning power and the softness.
Giovanni Organics 50:50 Balanced Conditioner: Again, not perfect but better than many. Leaves my hair smooth and soft and works just as well as traditional conditioners. I also like John Masters Organics Lavender & Avocado Intensive Conditioner but right now I can’t afford a $22 conditioner. I love it, and when I can swing a bottle I’ll get it but let’s face it, it’s a fortune. Giovanni is available at Target and only costs about $7-9 bucks. I can handle that.
Tilvee Shea Butter Bap Soap (Face): I have very sensitive skin and mild rosacea and a dermatologist told me to use anti-bacterial Cetaphil. Well, I’m not comfortable with the ingredients (fragrance, PEG’s and Triclosan as the anti-bacterial agent) so I set out to find a better soap that had few ingredients. Tilvee was the winner/ I use their Shea Butter bar for dry and sensitive skin and it works great. Plus no gross ingredients.
BAR SOAP: Ok this is where my obsession is and it’s evident by the bar soap in my shower. I’ll just list them all. Kiss My Face Sudz C-Weed Sweet Orange and Hemp – I love citrus scents and this doesn’t disappoint. Bubble & Bee Coconut Lime Soap – another awesome one. Dr Bronner’s Lavender Bar Soap – cheap, works and available at Target, Kroger, etc. One type of soap I don’t have right now that I love is bar soap from LuSa Organics. I like the Ylang ylang and Lavender Goats Milk Soap but they have a ton of choices for every preference. All natural and they’re purely awesome. I love their sugar scrubs and their lip balms too… actually I love everything they make and need to place an order soon. Worth every penny. There are tons of natural soaps to pick from – this is the easiest thing to change when going natural.
Weleda Birch Body Scrub: I got this on a whim and reviewed it but it doesn’t get much play in my shower. It smells nice and I think if I tried it with a loofah it might work better but then its a body wash not a scrub so it gets neglected. Read my review here.
Rocky Mountain Soap Company Bamboo Body Scrub: I just reviewed this and really love it. I’ve been using it often and I am buttery soft as a result. I love scrubs and although I don’t always have time to use them, when I do they have to be awesome. This one is worth of my time for sure.
Next time I’ll give you the inside look at my after-shower body care and perhaps a peek into my make up bag!
Ok ladies. I have a new *must have* line of products for you. In a late night search I found LuSa Organics. I immediately started drooling over their products. Since I first tried a few delectable items I jumped back online and ordered $80 more. LuSa Organics is a family run business, a very cute family with 2 adorable little kids and a whole slew of inspired and luxurious bath goodies that cater to women, mom and baby.
I am seriously addicted, and it’s been a while since I found a line that I really truly loved in that “buy my self a girly treat” sort of way. First, I am totally committed to their unbelievable Organic Sugar Scrubs. I tend to prefer sugar scrubs in general but this one is really amazing because it’s not a big sloppy scrub which I find doesn’t have as much “scrub” and more “goop”. This one though is a tin packed with organic sugar so you really get your scrubs worth on one scoop. They smell good, they scrub great and moisturize the toughest spots. I attribute my now smooth arms and legs to this scrub. Seriously, even my husband commented on my softness. I. Love. It. The Mint scrub leaves you feeling clean and sparkly and the Lavender scrub is a soothing treat for the skin. This is my must-have bath treat.
Also? Lotion Bars. I have never used a lotion bar before but I was dying to try it. I don’t know if this is the right way to use one but I take the whole thing out of its pretty tin and rub it all over feet and hands before bed. I swear, he next morning I wake up with the softest feet and hands. My lavender Lotion Bar is now a permanent fixture on my night stand. These are great for traveling too, no trying to drag a big silly pump in your travel bag or risking a tube opening up accidentally. Lotion Bar is my new staple beauty item.
Their fresh goats milk handcrafted soaps are all unbelievably fresh smelling. I have a bar of Ylang Ylang and Lavender in my shower and I reach for it over all the others. It lathers perfectly and the smell… oh heaven.
I could go on for eternity, but I assure you all their products are divine. They carry Belly Balms, Diaper Balms, Essential Oils… I promise you, you will not be disappointed. LuSa Organics has a cool Soap of the Month Club too which would make a great gift (HINT HINT) and they have some lovely Gift Collections for New Mom and Baby.
Lovely SafeMama Winner! Ok not only do I absolutely adore this company and their products but everything they carry is totally natural, organic when possible and they use sustainable and local ingredients to craft their wonderful goodies. They also donate 10% of their profits to organizations generating positive global change.
