Dr. Hauschka Volumizing Mascara

Given the claims that conventional mascara makes (“Your lashes will punch others in the face with their girth and length!“), it’s no wonder that our reviews of safer mascara are, well, lacking.  The majority of conventional mascaras work based on the type of wand (most of the volumizing wands are now made of silicone), and I’m sure it does add some semblance of a “clumping effect” albeit slight, so that it gives the illusion that your lashes are longer and fuller.   But no mascara really does that for me so I have no idea what I’m talking about when it comes to science.

Now that my kids are getting older and allow me five minutes to put myself together (not the whole five minutes to myself, and not without a lot of tattling, screaming, and shoving each other, I might add), I’ve slowly been remembering to wear at least a little makeup every day.    So, I treated myself to some new stuff, one of them being mascara.  And as far as “green” mascara goes your choices are limited and as far as green AND volumizing?  Well, Dr. Hauschka’s volumizing mascara is pretty much all that there is.

Dr. Hauschka’s volumizing mascara will not make the same claims that its conventional counterparts will.  Your lashes will not precede you when walking into a room.  It’s a very simple mascara, and it did give my lashes more volume but realize that I have little nubbins for lashes so anything is an improvement for me and this isn’t a complaint.  I take any mascara at face value because I think what mascara promises is ridiculous.   It smells fantastic, like rose petals, which beats any other brand in my book (I big puffy heart the scent).  Most mascara smells like mud in my opinion.   It doesn’t make my eyes itch and it gives me nice pleasant natural looking lashes without making me look like a drag queen.

So overall?  If you’re going for a more natural look and you’re looking to green up your mascara?  This is a sure winner.  The price isn’t majorly expensive (about the same as a good conventional mascara, more expensive than your typical drug store mascara), about $30. If you’re looking for something that will give you more of a supermodel look? Yeah sorry, you’re going to have to stick with Loreal.

Living Nature Liquid Foundation

When I was younger, and first learning about applying makeup (albeit, probably not correctly), I used liquid foundation.  It seemed like the right thing to do.   I probably picked out the wrong color for my skin tone, and I also probably had the mask look,  where the makeup ended and my naked skin began.   Ahh youth.   And then at some point in my twenties, I switched to a lighter liquid foundation and a pressed powder, eventually migrating away from foundation altogether, mainly because foundation started making me claustrophobic.  It was always too heavy, I liked that if I needed to put more on, I simply had a compact, and I didn’t need a sandblaster to take it off at night.   Not to mention, the smudges liquid foundation left on your favorite shirt.   I hate that!

Before greening up my beauty lifestyle, I was a devout M.A.C. person.  I always had at least three of the pressed powders at any given time.  It made my skin glow and allowed it to breathe.  Once I had kids, I wore it less frequently anyway.  My only option when going green was loose powder.  A few years ago, it was much more difficult to find a pressed powder that didn’t have a hot bed of cancerous chemicals in it.   Cut to current day and I’m kind of sick of loose powder.  It makes a huge mess, and it was just never my favorite.   So I decided to look back into liquid foundation, more for those days when I was going out somewhere where I wanted to look a shade more decent than my regular state.

Liquid foundation is just as I remember it.  I picked out Living Nature’s foundation, based on the fact that it was Saffron Rouge’s top pick, and while it was expensive, it was middle of the road.  But it was still liquid foundation, and it was in the middle in terms of weight.  It’s listed as a lighter weight foundation, which is true, but it’s not sheer.  The coverage is good, but it dries quickly as you’re applying it, so I feel as if I have this cakey look to my face if I’m not careful.  If you have a quick hand you may have better luck.  I wasn’t thrilled with the way it smelled either.

Thankfully if you’re looking for alternatives, there are a few, but they’re going to cost you.  Suki has a great line of products, including a liquid tinted moisturizer that Kathy has had better results with.   My advice?  If you’re looking for a liquid foundation, go with either Suki’s tinted moisturizer or one of Nvey’s foundation options.  I’ve never had a bad experience with either of these brands.  Kathy likes Miessence Liquid Foundation too.  Keep in mind that none of these options include sunscreen in their formulas.  So don’t forget to put a sunscreen on before you put your foundation on.

Nourish Baby Organics Coconut Balm

I don’t normally review baby products here on LovelyMama since this space is for us… but this one item I happened to steal for myself and fell in love with it.  Nourish Baby Organics is a great line of baby bath products made by a mom in Tennessee who wanted the safest products for her baby.  Just like we do.  So on a whim I picked up her Coconut Balm since I love everything coconut.  I bought it with the intention of using it on my son but when I took one whiff of it I decided it needed to be mine.

I’ve gone through the entire container.  Let’s put it that way.  It smells heavenly of coconut… the kind of coconut that reminds you of lying on a tropical beach somewhere without screaming kids and a Mai Tai resting next to you. I placed the tin on my nightstand (where only the best products in my arsenal go) and used it nightly for aromatherapy (ahhhh that beach) and to moisturize my hands and feet.  It works fabulously as a night treatment for over washed hands, cuticles, chapped lips.  According to her it’s great for eczema and diaper rash since plantain leaves relief itching and chickweed helps repair.  But I used it all up before I could get any of it on my sons butt.  I think it’s too good to put on someone’s butt! /selfish

If you love coconut and being soft and moisturized this is the balm for you.  Now that everyone up north is buried under 12 feet of snow, I know some of you could use a tropical escape – even if it is just in the form of a really nice body balm.  And it’s mostly organic, so there you go.

GET IT, SERIOUSLY: You can get this and other great Nourish Baby Organics products on Good Things Green Things!

Bubble and Bee Organic Facial Cleanser

I fully am expecting Stephanie, from Bubble and Bee to take over the world, sometime soon.   I noticed that she had come out with a facial care line, and I have been dying to try it.  And with going through a major winter depression, I decided that the time was now, and I treated myself to some new goodies.  I didn’t treat myself to enough goodies, but that’s neither here nor there.

My face is… weird (insert bad joke here).  It’s never really consistent.  It’s sensitive.  It isn’t sensitive.  It’s dry.  It’s oily.  It’s flaky.  It’s itchy.  It’s shiny.   I wish it would pick something and stick with it.   So when I went to choose a facial cleanser to try out I made a faux pas in not trying out the sample pack.  Instead I chose the Pineapple facial cleanser for normal skin.  I don’t know what I was thinking.  That all of those things equal an average round about to normal skin?  Yeah, my logic isn’t so logical sometimes.

This stuff is awesome.  It cleaned as it should but it was a little too drying for my particular skin and I chalk this up to winter, and my skin just being a jerk right now.   It cleaned really well and didn’t leave my face overly dry.   I would say if you’re in the middle of a bitterly cold and raw winter, and your skin is throwing a tantrum about it, go for something for sensitive skin. Bubble and Bee has two other facial cleansers including a gentle Honey & Rosehip cleanser which is suited for more dry and sensitive skin.

What I love about the facial cleanser is that lathers nicely.  I’m not a “cleanser” kind of girl, rather, more of a face wash kind of girl.  I need a little lather in order to get the road dirt off.   It smells awesome and of course I never even so much as flinch with a worry when buying Bubble and Bee products.   The list of ingredients is always short and it’s never anything that I can’t pronounce.   I always feel as if I’m treating my skin to the best that nature has to offer when I buy from them.

You can purchase any of Bubble and Bee’s facial cleansers right from BubbleandBee.com, or if you’re taking a vacation to Utah, go and visit her store and see all the other goodies Stephanie has to offer.

Bailey Cosmetics Make Up Line: Beauty Never Sleeps

Happy New Year!  I want to start off the year with some make up reviews because I know a lot of you are searching for recommendations.  Serendipitously I was contacted to try out a great line of cosmetics called Bailey Cosmetics which was developed to work well and be conscious of safety and of the environment.  The line has no parabens, no fragrance, no nano-particles, no micronized particles, to talc and no bysmuth oxychloride (which is found in many mineral make ups and can be an irritant).  Bailey Cosmetics created a line that was safe and uses only pure grade minerals.

What I was instantly impressed with was the packaging and the tools.  All the containers and brush handles are made with recyclable aluminum compacts (those of you who like to avoid aluminum take note) that feels good to hold and under the cap of each has a mirror.  The brushes are made with either humanely sourced goat hair or synthetic bristles.  They never test their products on animals and they use recycled materials for packaging and shipping.

Beauty Never Sleeps sent me their full collection to try out which included their 2 tone foundation powder, a dual eye shadow that has a shade that doubles as eyeliner, a blush, their Powder of Youth which provides a healthy glow without the extra sun exposure, their graphite eye brow pencil and a set of their fabulous brushes.

I was skeptical when I waited for them to arrive… safe, ok but does it work? Are they too potent? Do they smell like a cave?  Natural make up either falls into two categories for me.  Too much pigment (and I can never find a good balance to use it) or the color is right and it smells like I’m doing a cave painting with mud.  Natural make up can sometimes smell that way.  Not the case on either points.  I followed their step by step insert on creating a day and evening look and both are easy and made me look, well gorgeous.  In fact after my first time trying it all out I met up with my mother later on.  She commented on my make up and said “What do you have on, I need that”. That basically means it looked good and she wants it for herself.  :)

The colors are soft and neutral and bring out your beauty rather than mask you like a clown.  The foundation duo in Medium was perfect for my skin tone and matched just right.  They have a handy illustration on their website to help you chose your colors.

They also have a really nice lip gloss that provides the perfect pink sheen to your lips without looking overdone. It has aloe and shea butter to protect and heal.  These products aren’t vegan (beeswax) but as I mentioned they do not test on animals and take care to chose materials that are as environmentally friendly as possible without compromising the glamorousness. Is that a word? Well, it should be. The Bailey Cosmetic line is a fabulous find… safer than the traditional gunk you find in department stores and you still look just as fabulous.

Biggs & Featherbelle Health Conscious Body Care (Giveaway)

I don’t remember how I learned about Biggs & Featherbelle but their samples came to me right at the perfect time.  I was having a stressful day and a box of treats showed up at my door.  My obsession with bar soap is almost as ridiculous as my obsession with lip balm.  And when I got samples of both it was like my worlds colliding… in a good way. Just to ice the cake here, they also sent me one of their very luscious Body Butter Bars.  I had forgotten how much I love lotion bars in the winter time when my skin gets so dry and chapped I look like a lizard shedding its skin. It’s not attractive. But lotion bars or more specifically, Biggs & Featherbelle’s Body Butter Bars are the perfect way to combat this.

When I first tried lotion bars last year, I looked at my purchase and thought “What am I supposed to do with this?”.  But now I’m a pro and they are woooonderful for dry skin problems.  They key is warming them up. You can’t just take it out of the package and start rubbing it on yourself.  Well you could, on an elbow or something, but I have much better results when I rub it between my hands first and then apply to my rough areas like feet, hands, elbows, and even shins if you can believe it.

But that’s not all you can find at Biggs & Featherbelle… they have a wide range of fabulous products including soaking salts, lip balms and  soaps.  I received their Muscle Soak and lined up a night to soak my aching body (I’ve been doing a lot of Pilates and Yoga lately -and OW man) .  What a lovely relief it provided. With ingredients like Sea Salt, Epsom salt ginger and clary sage – it landed me a long hot bath full of relaxation and muscle relief.

Now on to the bar soaps.  I collect bar soap.  Seriously… it’s a sickness.  There is so many in my shower at any given time (hey I like to have choices in there) that my husband often stands there dumbfounded wondering if I am working on a soap sculpture.  But after trying out Biggs & Featherbelle’s Bar Soap I truly am wondering if I’ll ever stop buying soap.  They have so many fantastic scents to chose from like their Beach Bar with Sea salt, eucalyptus, clary sage and jojoba oil for exfoliation and moisturizing.  Or their really awesome Goodie Bar which is packed with skin nourishing oils like Macadamia Nut oil an Sweet Almond along with goat’s mil for hydrating and smoothing.  I could go on forever, but you can check out the selection yourself. Yum yum yum. Love love love.

Their ingredients lists are truly impressive – not a chemical as far as the eye can see. Their cute and eco-friendly packaging is a big bonus too – I love my bath goodies to look nice!  I’ll be a frequent customer, I can tell you that.

New Loves: Miessence Shimmer Creme & Liquid Foundation

Someone recently asked me about safe play make up for kids and I started looking around on the Internet for some safe brands.  Then it dawned on me that if you yourself are using safer make up, then it’s going to be safer for your daughters too.  I’ve been trying to really make an effort to make my make up bag as non-toxic and chemical free as possible and part of that meant finding new options for foundation and for lip colors.  I’ve been a big fan of mineral make up for a while but lately I’ve been wondering about those little particles getting in my lungs and felt I needed to find a liquid foundation that isn’t full of gunk.

Erin of Ely Organics was so gracious to send me some samples of the cosmetics offered by Miessence Organics.  It never occurred to me to check with Miessence for make up but lo, they do carry a nice line of cosmetics.  I checked out the Miessence Translucent Foundation and was really impressed. It goes on super smooth and does have a translucent look o it so you don’t look or feel overly made up or caked.  It blended in easily and is virtually odorless.  Ever notice how some foundations are a little, well stinky? Not so with Miessence Translucent Foundation.  It works perfectly by itself or with a powder (if that’s your preference).  If mineral foundations are your thing, they carry that too, along with concealers and bronzer.

I also had the chance to try out their Shimmer Creme.  This might be one of my newest favorite products Ive tried recently.  It’s essentially a lip gloss in pot rather than a tube since its more solid but onc eyou put your finger or lip brush in it you quickly realize it’s versatility. I chose a Shimmer Creme in Berry which is a warm berry tinted gloss that goes on sheer.  You can play with the concentration too… want to go light? You dab a small amount on your lips for a sheer tint of color with some sheen to it.  Need more of a night look? Add a larger amount and the color gets deeper with a glossier look.

What I also love is that it feels nice on your lips.  Not sticky or thick and has a very faint scent (vanilla?).  Either way, this made it as a permanent resident in my purse and will be making an appearance on my lips at a Holiday Party tomorrow night. What’s great is you can also use this as a blush… its sheer enough and light enough to give you an extra little glow.  It’s hard to believe a lip gloss that works this well has only 4 ingredients: certified organic simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, certified organic unrefined cera alba (beeswax), mica, certified organic vanilla planifolia fruit extract. That’s it.

Miessence uses all natural ingredients, no chemicals and mostly organic ingredients too. I’m beginning a kind of love affair with Miessence products!

Crazy Rumors Lip Balm

Oh yes more lip balm.  I am a self professed lip balm addict, as you may very well know.  So when a couple samples of Crazy Rumors lip balm crossed my desk I was all for trying them out.  I adore these lip balms for several reasons:

First is the ingredients list.  All the lip balms are made with all natural and organic ingredients. No ickies.  There are several varieties of scents and flavors and they are made with organic flavors and flavored with stevia. Important to note too is that they are not tested on animals and they are totally vegan!

Second is the packaging… I know many moms cringe at the varieties of lip balms marketed to kids.  These would be a great alternative.  With flavors like Raspberry Sherbet, Lemonade, Mint Chocolate Chip and Root Beer how can you go wrong? Wouldn’t these be a great stocking stuffer?

Performance: I am picky about my lip balms.  If they get bumpy or chunky or don’t glide on easily I am not a happy lip balming camper. But Crazy Rumors lip balms deliver.  I’ve had them in my pockets for weeks and they still work great and haven’t gotten weird or lumpy. Smooth smooth lip balm action over here.  I love the scents and they have a faint sweet flavor. Thumbs up!

Get Them! You can pick up any of they’re awesome scented lip balms on their website CrazyRumors.com, including their tinted HibisKiss lip balms.  Their Candy Cane set might be a cute surprise in someone’s stocking this year… *ahem* like for me. :)

The creator of Soapwalla, Rachel Winard, has so graciously provided the following DIY recipes for holiday gift ideas.  Her product line, Soapwalla is one of my absolute favorites so I know you’ll appreciate her bountiful knowledge –   Enjoy!

Want to give your loved ones something special this year? Why not make them something that’s sure to please, won’t break the bank, and is good for the environment to boot!

Below are some basic, high quality skincare products that can be created with items you’d find in your kitchen cabinets.  Dressed up in beautiful jars and lovely labeling, these presents will be a huge hit.

You can purchase many of the specialty ingredients, as well as bottles and jars, from one of my favorite sources — Mountain Rose Herbs.

Face Mask – for all skin types

You’ll need:
1 cup kaolin clay
1 cup baking soda
1 cup finely ground oat flour (or rolled oats ground in your food processor)
15 drops lavender essential oil

Sift dry ingredients into a bowl. Add essential oil and mix thoroughly with your fingers until the oil is thoroughly incorporated.  Divide into 4- or 8-oz glass jars.

How to use: pour a generous amount into the palm of your hand or small bowl (1-2 tablespoons). Add enough water to make a thin paste. Apply to dry face and neck in a gentle upward-sweeping motion. Let set for 10 minutes, then rinse with warm water. Use twice a week.

Volumizing Hair Rinse

½ cup witch hazel
¼ cup rose water
Splash vodka (½ oz at most)
2 drops peppermint essential oil
4 drops rosemary essential oil

Mix all ingredients and store in an opaque 8 oz. glass or metal bottle.  Shake thoroughly before each use.

How to use: twice a week, apply rinse to damp hair that has been washed. Allow to penetrate for a few minutes, then rinse off.

Uplifting Eau de Toilette (Room Spray)

2 cups distilled water (not tap or purified)
½ cup vodka
10 drops each of the following essential oils: lavender, lime
5 drops cedarwood essential oil

Mix all ingredients thoroughly in opaque 4 oz. glass or plastic spray bottles. Let sit for 1 week, to allow the ingredients to meld. Shake before each use. Can be used as room refresher, on bed linens, and in bathrooms and kitchens. Do not spray on food, pets, or children.

Revolution Organics New Freedom Lip Gloss & Awesome Giveaway

I have several lip gloss reviews coming up and wanted to kick them off this the new glosses from Revolution Organics.  I learned about Revolution Organics a few years ago when I fell in love with their 22+ Uses All Over Body Balm.  Their motto is “Guilt Free Glam” and with good reason.  These products not only deliver but they do so without toxins and chemicals.  I know I’ve said it before but I am a lip gloss girl.  I have thousands of them.  Good, bad and great ones. So when I learned that Revolution Organics recently added lip gloss to their arsenal of products I was skipping with glee.

The technical stuff: These are made with natural and 85% certified organic ingredients.  It’s free of chemicals, mineral oils, petroleum, sulfates and parabens.  It’s packaged in recyclable, biodegradable materials and uses mineral pigments to create the lush colors. I was really impressed with the ingredient content in these glosses because it’s hard to find a gloss that delivers the way lip glosses we were used to, using only natural ingredients.  But Revolution Organics has figured it out.  Using plant proteins and extracts they actually promote healthy lips with antioxidants while keeping them hydrated and moisturized.  They also don’t test these pretty products on animals.

The beauty stuff: They come in 5 great colors and they are all sheer but colorful enough to wear every day (or night). Judging by the vibrancy in the tube you’d think it painted on like a lipstick but in reality it smooths on a sheer rich color that isn’t too over powering. My favorite for my skin coloring is Integrity which is a pretty rose with a subtle gold shimmer.  I can get away with the bright hot pink too for a night out.  It’s pink enough to compliment without making me look like a clown.  The clincher? They aren’t sticky. So many times have I bought a “natural” lip gloss only to put it on and it feel like plastic wrap on my lips. These are truly natural and truly comfortable to wear.

What I also appreciate is their packaging.  I’m a sucker for great packaging.  And while I try to buy only natural and safer cosmetics and skin care for myself, I admit I feel a pang of envy when I see a line with great packaging – wishing it wasn’t laden with petroleum and parabens. But with Revolution Organics – you get the best of both worlds.  Natural and safe and looking chic at the same time.  Revolution Organics is one of my top choices. I’m a customer for life.

Get it: You can purchase their new Freedom Lip Glosses from their website Revolution Organics or from other online retailers like Saffron Rouge or Upurea.com

WIN IT

I’m giving away a mega gift pack to a LovelyMama reader.  You will receive the complete line of Freedom Lip Glosses (5 – one of each color) AND a set of their fabulous Freedom Glow Beauty Balms (3 colors).
