Someone recently asked me about safe play make up for kids and I started looking around on the Internet for some safe brands. Then it dawned on me that if you yourself are using safer make up, then it’s going to be safer for your daughters too. I’ve been trying to really make an effort to make my make up bag as non-toxic and chemical free as possible and part of that meant finding new options for foundation and for lip colors. I’ve been a big fan of mineral make up for a while but lately I’ve been wondering about those little particles getting in my lungs and felt I needed to find a liquid foundation that isn’t full of gunk.
Erin of Ely Organics was so gracious to send me some samples of the cosmetics offered by Miessence Organics. It never occurred to me to check with Miessence for make up but lo, they do carry a nice line of cosmetics. I checked out the Miessence Translucent Foundation and was really impressed. It goes on super smooth and does have a translucent look o it so you don’t look or feel overly made up or caked. It blended in easily and is virtually odorless. Ever notice how some foundations are a little, well stinky? Not so with Miessence Translucent Foundation. It works perfectly by itself or with a powder (if that’s your preference). If mineral foundations are your thing, they carry that too, along with concealers and bronzer.
I also had the chance to try out their Shimmer Creme. This might be one of my newest favorite products Ive tried recently. It’s essentially a lip gloss in pot rather than a tube since its more solid but onc eyou put your finger or lip brush in it you quickly realize it’s versatility. I chose a Shimmer Creme in Berry which is a warm berry tinted gloss that goes on sheer. You can play with the concentration too… want to go light? You dab a small amount on your lips for a sheer tint of color with some sheen to it. Need more of a night look? Add a larger amount and the color gets deeper with a glossier look.
What I also love is that it feels nice on your lips. Not sticky or thick and has a very faint scent (vanilla?). Either way, this made it as a permanent resident in my purse and will be making an appearance on my lips at a Holiday Party tomorrow night. What’s great is you can also use this as a blush… its sheer enough and light enough to give you an extra little glow. It’s hard to believe a lip gloss that works this well has only 4 ingredients: certified organic simmondsia chinensis (jojoba) seed oil, certified organic unrefined cera alba (beeswax), mica, certified organic vanilla planifolia fruit extract. That’s it.
Miessence uses all natural ingredients, no chemicals and mostly organic ingredients too. I’m beginning a kind of love affair with Miessence products!

Oh yes more lip balm. I am a self professed lip balm addict, as you may very well know. So when a couple samples of Crazy Rumors lip balm crossed my desk I was all for trying them out. I adore these lip balms for several reasons:
First is the ingredients list. All the lip balms are made with all natural and organic ingredients. No ickies. There are several varieties of scents and flavors and they are made with organic flavors and flavored with stevia. Important to note too is that they are not tested on animals and they are totally vegan!
Second is the packaging… I know many moms cringe at the varieties of lip balms marketed to kids. These would be a great alternative. With flavors like Raspberry Sherbet, Lemonade, Mint Chocolate Chip and Root Beer how can you go wrong? Wouldn’t these be a great stocking stuffer?
Performance: I am picky about my lip balms. If they get bumpy or chunky or don’t glide on easily I am not a happy lip balming camper. But Crazy Rumors lip balms deliver. I’ve had them in my pockets for weeks and they still work great and haven’t gotten weird or lumpy. Smooth smooth lip balm action over here. I love the scents and they have a faint sweet flavor. Thumbs up!
Get Them! You can pick up any of they’re awesome scented lip balms on their website CrazyRumors.com, including their tinted HibisKiss lip balms. Their Candy Cane set might be a cute surprise in someone’s stocking this year… *ahem* like for me.

I have several lip gloss reviews coming up and wanted to kick them off this the new glosses from Revolution Organics. I learned about Revolution Organics a few years ago when I fell in love with their 22+ Uses All Over Body Balm. Their motto is “Guilt Free Glam” and with good reason. These products not only deliver but they do so without toxins and chemicals. I know I’ve said it before but I am a lip gloss girl. I have thousands of them. Good, bad and great ones. So when I learned that Revolution Organics recently added lip gloss to their arsenal of products I was skipping with glee.
The technical stuff: These are made with natural and 85% certified organic ingredients. It’s free of chemicals, mineral oils, petroleum, sulfates and parabens. It’s packaged in recyclable, biodegradable materials and uses mineral pigments to create the lush colors. I was really impressed with the ingredient content in these glosses because it’s hard to find a gloss that delivers the way lip glosses we were used to, using only natural ingredients. But Revolution Organics has figured it out. Using plant proteins and extracts they actually promote healthy lips with antioxidants while keeping them hydrated and moisturized. They also don’t test these pretty products on animals.
The beauty stuff: They come in 5 great colors and they are all sheer but colorful enough to wear every day (or night). Judging by the vibrancy in the tube you’d think it painted on like a lipstick but in reality it smooths on a sheer rich color that isn’t too over powering. My favorite for my skin coloring is Integrity which is a pretty rose with a subtle gold shimmer. I can get away with the bright hot pink too for a night out. It’s pink enough to compliment without making me look like a clown. The clincher? They aren’t sticky. So many times have I bought a “natural” lip gloss only to put it on and it feel like plastic wrap on my lips. These are truly natural and truly comfortable to wear.
What I also appreciate is their packaging. I’m a sucker for great packaging. And while I try to buy only natural and safer cosmetics and skin care for myself, I admit I feel a pang of envy when I see a line with great packaging – wishing it wasn’t laden with petroleum and parabens. But with Revolution Organics – you get the best of both worlds. Natural and safe and looking chic at the same time. Revolution Organics is one of my top choices. I’m a customer for life.
Get it: You can purchase their new Freedom Lip Glosses from their website Revolution Organics or from other online retailers like Saffron Rouge or Upurea.com

I don’t have my thumb on the pulse of every trend in fashion and style but I like to think I’m not totally in the dark when it comes to those things. Even though I prefer less chemicals I still read fashion and beauty magazines and watch for the seasonal trends that pop up. Nail polish color is one of them. Granted most nail polish is not a notoriously “green” item but I can’t give up my mani pedis. What I can do is choose fashionable colors that are made by brands that follow the “3 Free” rule. That is: Free of Dibutyl Phthalate (DBP), Formaldehyde and Toluene. (Check out my favorite nail polish blog All Laquered Up for a great breakdown of what and why)
When I got a few samples of Dashing Divas new colors that were all over the runways at Fashion Week, I was tickled to see they have 3 Free formulas. The colors gracing the runway? Sheer pinks, dark gunmetal metallic, matte blacks and burgundy. I love all of their colors – even the ones I never would think I would wear, I like to wear. From their Fall Collection, a metallic neutral called No More Alimony is shiny and awesome. Hard to put on but worth the effort. A fun “night out” color. The Fall Collection is delicious and perfect for this weather and season. I am totally wearing Bitter Sweet for Halloween!
They also have a neat product called Make-It Matte that transforms your color to a perfectly matte finish. I thought at first, “Why?” but after I tried it – FUN. I also like this on bare nails too. This is great for men as well.
Overall is this the perfect, from nature, totally green hippie brand? No but they’re free of the big 3 so if you’re a mani girl like me, you will take it where you can get it.

In case you missed it, or don’t recall, I did a What’s In My Make Up Bag post a while ago. I don’t have a pristine natural selection of cosmetics but I try. One of the things I hadn’t found yet was a more natural option for eye liner. I don’t wear it every day but I have pretty fair coloring and need to emphasize my eyes when I can manage to. I was not blessed with full dark lashes. Anyhow, when I was in NYC for BlogHer, Joelle and I made a little detour to Sephora on our way to the convention hotel.. you know, like girls tend to do. On a whim I grabbed a little value pack of eye liner and mascara by Tarte which featured a travel sized mascara that I love and have used before, Tarte Lash Hugger. Along side it though came a Tarte emphasEYES™ eyeliner.
It didn’t occur to me until just now that it is meant for the inner rim of your eye for that “smoky” look. I don’t hardly ever go anywhere to warrant a “smokey eye” these days so I have just been using it primarily as an eyeliner. It goes on smooth and stays all day. I’d say that was a success in the realm of natural cosmetic use.
Tarte makes many of their products without the use of parabens, phthalates, petrolatum, SLS, or mineral oils. The emphasEYES eyeliner is no exception. Their products are by no means chemical free but it lacks some of the bigger players we try to avoid these days so it’s a good alternative that performs rather well.
Get It: You can purchase Tarte products and their emphasEYES eyeliner on their website or on Sephora.com. It comes in 3 colors: Black, Chocolate and Plum.

One of the best things about attending BlogHer this summer was being able to meet some of the bloggers that I read regularly, like Victoria from Mommy Is Green. She so very graciously offered to share with you her own DIY recipe! Here it is:

DIY Cleansing Facial Scrub recipe from MommyIsGreen.net
DIY: Cleansing Facial Scrub
I’m always looking for the safest bath and body products. I find it important to use items without parabens, phthalates, petroleum-based products, etc. Sometimes the safest products are the ones you make yourself. I had a difficult time finding a facial scrub with ingredients I felt good about. So I decided to come up with my own. I decided to make a Cleansing Facial Scrub. Here’s what you’ll need:
- 4 tablespoons of Pure Cane Sugar (finer grain than Sugar in the Raw)
- 1 tablespoon of Castile Soap
- 1 teaspoon of Sweet Almond Oil
- 10 drops of essential oil (optional)
- 2 oz. container with lid
Pour the castile soap into your container (a tinted glass container will help preserve the essential oil if you have one). Add the sweet almond oil and the essential oil drops to the castile soap. Mix well. Add the sugar tablespoon by tablespoon while stirring.
You can keep the scrub refrigerated so it stays firmer. You’ll also want to mix it with your finger before each use. Apply the scrub directly to your face and add a few drops of water when needed.
Personally, I like to use Dr. Bronner’s Liquid Castile Soap, Florida Crystals USDA Certified Organic Pure Cane Sugar, and Aura Cacia USDA Certified Organic Sweet Almond Oil and Essential Oil. You can mix and match the scented castile soap with different essential oils to create your own unique scents. A couple of versions I use are citrus castile with sweet orange oil, and peppermint castile with grapefruit essential oil. If you have sensitive skin you can use an unscented castile soap and skip the essential oils.
I usually prefer to use a facial scrub and cleanser separately, but this scrub is for the end the day. It’s for at night when you’re just too tired to go through a whole routine. You have the sugar for exfoliating, the soap for cleansing, and the oil for moisturizing. If you’re concerned about having oil in your cleanser, remember that oil dissolves oil.
Please visit Victoria at Mommy Is Green for more of her insightful writing about her journey through becoming green and the products and practices that get her there.
Thank you Victoria!

I’m admitting, right here and right now, that I do not make my own deodorant. Statia does, and her and her husband use it often. But I have not gone down that road personally. I have had success using several brands of natural deodorants and with some time and patience, I do not need to rely on a stick of Dove for security. In fact the last time I did, I smelled within a few hours. Not sure why, but that was the last time I used a traditional deodorant.
I will also admit that not every natural deodorant works for me, and that’s not because the product doesn’t work or is faulty. But sometimes, certain recipes don’t mesh with your body chemistry. You have to find what works best for YOU.
In order for me to consider a deodorant safe, it must be free of the following ingredients:
Aluminum: Research is suggesting that aluminum may be linked to Alzheimer’s Disease and some aluminum ingredients may be hormone disruptors to boot. Propylene Glycol, Parabens, Phthalates, Triclosan (believe it or not some “deodorants claiming they are natural contain Triclosan) and all the other usual suspects that I scan for in approved products. This list is in alphabetical order and is not comprehensive so if you know a brand you think belongs here, let me know and I’ll verify it and add it to the list.
Best In Show
- Aubrey Organics (Spray, Roll-on, & Men’s)
- Avalon Organic Botanicals Lavender Deodorant Spray
- Bubble & Bee Pit Putty & Deodorant Sprays
- Burt’s Bee’s Mens Deodorant
- Dr. Hauschka Skin Care Deodorant
- Erbaviva Deodorant Spray
- Face Naturals Organic Deodorants
- Miessence Deodorant Roll-on
- Real Purity Deodorant
- Soapwalla Deodorant Cream
- Terressentials Organic Super Protection Deodorant
- Weleda Deodorant (all scents)
- Yoreganics Natural Deodorizer
Runner Up’s (Better but not great)
- Jason Natural Cosmetics Deodorant – This works well as a deodorant but the first ingredient listed is Propylene Glycol. I have used this as my safety net deodorant when I needed extra protection but my armpits started peeling recently so I have since stopped using it.
- Tom’s of Maine Natural Deodorant – Same deal. Uses Propylene Glycol as their main ingredient. My parents both use this with great success but I had a not effective relationship with it myself and never went back.
- Kiss My Face Active Enzyme Deodorant - Not chemical free and contains Phenoxyethanol.
- Earth Science Natural Deodorant – Not chemical free and main ingredient is Propylene Glycol.
I’ve chosen not to list crystal deodorant stones and sprays because of the possible unintentional aluminum content. To read more about that please visit Stephanie Greenwood’s blog for more information. If you disagree, that’s fine. I’m sure I’ll get some crap about not including it but…tough noogies.

The creator of Soapwalla, Rachel Winard, has so graciously provided the following tips and DIY recipes for dealing with Rosacea – a common question around here. I have a mild case of it myself. Her product line, Soapwalla is one of my absolute favorites so I know you’ll appreciate her bountiful knowledge – Enjoy!
The single most common question people ask me is what are the most effective natural ways to treat rosacea, a chronic and sometimes disruptive disorder.
What is Rosacea? Rosacea is a skin disorder that causes redness and swelling, primarily on the cheeks, nose, forehead and chin. Others experience increased sensitivity and redness on the scalp, neck, ears, chest, back and eyes. Some people mistakenly confuse rosacea for acne, sunburn, and excessive flushing. The National Rosacea Society estimates that well over 16 million Americans suffer from this skin condition.
I know firsthand how debilitating face rashes can be. When I have a particularly bad face rash, I dread and will do almost anything to avoid public outings.
Causes
What causes rosacea? Experts aren’t sure, although one recent study suggested a link between rosacea and the H Pylori bacteria that commonly causes ulcers.* However, there are certain universal rosacea triggers that we may avoid, including:
- Stress: goes without saying. Nearly impossible to implement, but try to incorporate stress reduction techniques in your daily schedule. I personally cannot function without my yoga practice.
- Temperature: extreme temperature changes, strong winds, saunas and steam rooms, etc.
- Beverages: avoid alcohol, caffeine, and excessively hot drinks – in temperature as well as spiciness.
- Foods: this varies, but the most common culprits include chocolate, vinegar, nightshades (eggplant, tomatoes, bell peppers and potatoes), spicy foods, cheese, and citrus fruits. A specific food allergy can also manifest itself as skin redness.
- Skincare Products: avoid witch hazel, alcohol, acetone, and anything that causes burning or stinging upon application. Topical steroid creams can also aggravate red skin. When my skin is particularly inflamed, I cannot use aloe vera as it literally burns my skin (I learned the hard way, and I’ll spare you the gory details). In addition, overzealous skin cleansing and harsh exfoliation exacerbate redness and tenderness.
- Systems: hormone imbalances or synthetic hormones (think hormone replacement therapy and birth control pills) and poor digestion are linked to increased skin flares.
Treatments
I firmly believe that we can help our skin repair itself through diet, supplements and a holistic skincare regimen. Below is a list of highly potent ingredients that replenish our bodies and calm down redness and irritation:
- Wholesome Foods: I often talk about the link between healthful eating and happy skin, and it’s true – what we put in our bodies is as important as what we put on them. Support your body by eating fresh vegetables and fruits, whole grains like brown rice and millet, and including nuts and seeds that are high in essential fatty acids, such as flax seeds and walnuts.
- Supplements: Make sure you are getting a daily dose of B-Complex vitamins. If you are vegan, you need to take a supplement. I personally like Floradix Iron & Herbs.
- Skincare: use skincare preparations that are designed specifically for sensitive skin. Seek out products with organic, whole ingredients and that avoid synthetics, chemicals, petrochemicals, and preservatives. Look for the following ingredients, shown to tone down redness and reduce inflammation:
- Evening Primrose, Borage and Black Currant Oils – rich sources of gamma linoleic acid, an Omega 6 fatty acid that has anti-inflammatory and anti-oxidant effects. [Note: these oils should not be heated prior to use, as their potent health benefits will be reduced.]
- Blue Chamomile, Lavender and Carrot Seed Essential Oils – Blue Chamomile contains a concentration of Azulene, which has potent anti-inflammatory, skin healing properties. Lavender, regarded as the most versatile therapeutic oil, is an antibacterial, antimicrobial and anti-inflammatory must-have addition to your skin care products. Carrot Seed essential oil contains substantial amounts of Vitamins A, C, B1 and B2, and effectively removes toxins from the skin, giving it a fresher and firmer appearance.
- Calendula – Calendula oil is perhaps the most successful oil in diminishing dry and damaged skin, skin inflammations, rashes, and other skin ailments. An easy DIY calendula recipe is as follows:Place ¼ cup fully dried calendula flowers (make sure there is absolutely no moisture on the flowers; otherwise your oil will spoil) in the bottom of a clear glass jar that has an airtight seal. Pour 1 cup of your favorite oil (olive oil, sweet almond oil and jojoba oil are ideal) over the flowers, completely immersing them. Shake vigorously and place on a sunny windowsill. Shake once or twice a day for a month, until the oil turns a beautiful deep golden color. After a month, strain well and store in a dark glass container away from light and heat. This calendula oil can be used directly on the skin whenever you feel redness or irritation, and truly is a wonderful – and essential – addition to any sensitive skincare regimen!
- Cosmetics: While we ultimately want to eradicate redness and irritation, sometimes we just need to get out of the door looking - and feeling – confident. Luckily, these days we have a number of ethical, progressive cosmetics companies to choose from. Some of my favorites include RMS Beauty and Jane Iredale. Jessa Blades, founder of Blades Natural Beauty and an immensely talented make-up artist and eco-beauty consultant, is a wealth of knowledge when it comes to choosing and applying natural makeup and skincare products. Please stop by Jessa’s website for more information.
In addition, think about incorporating probiotics, milk thistle (a potent liver cleanser), bromelain (digestive enzyme found in pineapple) and turmeric (a spice with incredible anti-inflammatory and antibacterial properties) into your daily routine.
NOTE: Please test all new ingredients or formulations on the inside of your wrist to ensure you don’t have a sensitivity or allergic reaction.
Rachel Winard is the Brooklyn-based creator of Soapwalla, a line of luxury organic face and body products made with the highest quality organic and food-grade ingredients, never questionable additives such as sodium lauryl sulfate, parabens or harsh and synthetic additives.

I don’t wear a ton of make up. I know there are parts of the country where women tend to wear more make up than others (*cough* Long Island *cough* and I can say that because I grew up there) and I do wear some… enough to make myself acceptable for public consumption. I do like my girlie must haves and here is whats banging around in my make up bag:
Foundation: I don’t wear a lot of it and I never really did. But as I’m getting older I have rosacea and some flaws and I just need a light overall cover to make me happy. I am using mineral foundation which I have recently read to be less than great due to breathing in particles. But I loathe liquid foundation. Hate it. So I hold my breath and hope I don’t get some funky lung disease from it. My favorite is Alima Pure Mineral Satin Matte foundation after switching from Bare Minerals when I learned that it contained Bismuth Oxychloride which can be an irritant to rosacea sufferers.
I also use SukiColor Liquid Formula Concealer in Flax (which I can’t find on their website right now) for spot treating under eye circles, zits or whatever weirdness shows up. Blends well and has a more respectable ingredients list than most commercial liquid make up.
Blush: I hide from the sun so much so that I need an extra boost (I wear hats and sunglasses all the time) so I use Alima Pure Luminous Shimmer Blush in Dianthus. Dr Hauschka makes a nice blush bronzer too but the cost difference is amazing. $15 for Alima vs $30+ its an easy choice for me.
Eyes: NVEY Eco Organic Eye Shadow Palette in Palette 3. I had a palette of this before which I had gotten as a gift and it lasted me forever. So when I was digging the last of it out I decided it was a worthy investment. It’s $60. Yeah I know. But it lasted me well over a year to a year and a half. So I figure I’m spending that over a course of time on different ones anyway and this is organic. So I splurge. I also have a small Dr. Hauschka Eye Shadow Solo in Shimmering Ivory. But I may try the 4 color palettes they have next time instead of the NVEY. $44 vs $60 on that scale.
Eye Liner: I have a basic black eye liner from Sephora. Nothing green or safe about it. I need to find a better one.
Mascara: I use Tarte Lash Hugger Eco-Friendly Natural Mascara. Tarte uses better ingredients than most and avoids things like parabens, phthalates and mineral oils and is in a recycled tube. It works great… can’t complain. I tried out one of the “natural” brands at CVS and it was awful so I’ll stick with this.
Lips: My favorite topic! I don’t wear lipstick. It’s a pretty rare occasion if I do. I am a lip balm kind of girl and when I get dressed to go out (haha) I am a fan of lip gloss. Although since I started greening my make up I haven’t found too many lip glosses that do it for me. I have a million lip balms including: Badger Lip Balm in just abut every flavor but I love Tangerine and Lavender Orange, Bubble & Bee Lip Balm in both Coconut Lime and Rude Raspberry (which is Certified Organic now), a Burt’s Bees Radiance Lip Shimmer as well as a Burt’s Bees Super Shiny Lip Gloss in Sweet Pink, LuSa Organics lip balm (love) and an Earth Mama Angel Baby Lip Balm which I use at night.
Nails: I know we did a whole round up of safe nail polish but to be very honest – I hate almost all of them. They don’t stay on and yes I used them while I was pregnant if at all but my vanity is at stake here so I ave been using Zoya Polishes for my mani pedis. Zoya is Formaldehyde, Toluene and DBP Free so I feel somewhat better using them.
Anyone have any eye liner or lip gloss recommendations? Hope you enjoyed the peek into my bathroom!
