One of the things that seems to plague all of us is skin problems in one form or another.  Teen acne, adult acne, occasional breakouts, dry skin, aging skin, rosacea, etc.  Our skin seems to have a mind of its own no matter what type you have.  Once I decided to green up my skin care I went on a hunt for products that wouldn’t irritate my mild rosacea but would hopefully help me control my hormonal breakouts.

I had the opportunity to try out a skin care line called Miessence Certified Organics.  I’d seen his around for years but never tried it, but I’m glad I did.  The Miessence soothing skin care line held up to my standards for safer skin care.  It didn’t aggravate my rosacea and the products really do what they say they’ll do.  There is a system for every skin type and the system works well with the 3 base products.  The Miessence cleanser, skin conditioner, which is like a gentle toner and a moisturizer.

The Soothing line has a nicer vanilla style scent and is free of nasty petrochemicals, synthetic fragrances, parabens and features certified organics ingredients like organic aloe and bergamont.  Miessence Organics has a skin care line for every skin type including Balancing for normal/combo skin, Rejuvenating for mature/dry skin, Soothing for sensitive skin (like mine), and Purifying for oily/problem skin types who are prone to breaking out.  These are a great alternative to mainstream skin care lines full of icky petrochemicals.

LuSa OrganicsOk ladies.  I have a new *must have* line of products for you.  In a late night search I found LuSa Organics.  I immediately started drooling over their products.  Since I first tried a few delectable items I jumped back online and ordered $80 more.  LuSa Organics is a family run business, a very cute family with 2 adorable little kids and a whole slew of inspired and luxurious bath goodies that cater to women, mom and baby.

I am seriously addicted, and it’s been a while since I found a line that I really truly loved in that “buy my self a girly treat” sort of way.  First, I am totally committed to their unbelievable Organic Sugar Scrubs.  I tend to LuSa Organicsprefer sugar scrubs in general but this one is really amazing because it’s not a big sloppy scrub which I find doesn’t have as much “scrub” and more “goop”.  This one though is a tin packed with organic sugar so you really get your scrubs worth on one scoop.  They smell good, they scrub great and moisturize the toughest spots.  I attribute my now smooth arms and legs to this scrub.  Seriously, even my husband commented on my softness. I.  Love.  It.  The Mint scrub leaves you feeling clean and sparkly and the Lavender scrub is a soothing treat for the skin. This is my must-have bath treat.

Also? Lotion Bars. I have never used a lotion bar before but I was dying to try it.  I don’t know if this is the right way to use one but I take the whole thing out of its pretty tin and rub it all over feet and hands before bed.  I swear, he next morning I wake up with the softest feet and hands.  My lavender Lotion Bar is now a permanent fixture on my night stand.  These are great for traveling too, no trying to drag a big silly pump in your travel bag or risking a tube opening up accidentally.  Lotion Bar is my new staple beauty item.

Their fresh goats milk handcrafted soaps are all unbelievably fresh smelling.  I have a bar of Ylang Ylang and Lavender in my shower and I reach for it over all the others. It lathers perfectly and the smell… oh heaven.

I could go on for eternity, but I assure you all their products are divine.  They carry Belly Balms, Diaper Balms, Essential Oils… I promise you, you will not be disappointed.  LuSa Organics has a cool Soap of the Month Club too which would make a great gift (HINT HINT) and they have some lovely Gift Collections for New Mom and Baby.

Lovely SafeMama Winner! Ok not only do I absolutely adore this company and their products but everything they carry is totally natural, organic when possible and they use sustainable and local ingredients to craft their wonderful goodies. They also donate 10% of their profits to organizations generating positive global change.

Get it: LuSa Organics has so graciously offered our readers a special promotion.  When ordering from their website enter “LovelySafeMama Freebie” in the comments field on checkout (not the coupon box, comments field) and they’ll toss in a free gift with your order.  Thank you LuSa Organics!

Intelligent NutrientsOne of the first items from my Saffron Rouge deliveries was a lip balm from Intelligent Nutrients.  For those not familiar, Intelligent Nutrients is a company founded by the man responsible for Aveda,  which he later sold to Estee Lauder.  His new company bases it’s products on the objective of health through organic ingredients.  The product lines range from hair and scalp care to vitamin supplements to help battle the effects of aging and hydration of the skin and hair.  They even go so far as create organic sugar substitutes and organic coffee.

Intelligent Nutrients Lip DeliveryBack to the lip balm.  I was excited about this one since I had to retire my petroleum based Soft Lips lip balm which I loved for the slim packaging.  Lip Delivery Nutrition is a daily wear lip balm packed with moisturizing organic emollients to heal and moisten dry lips while delivering antioxidants to help prevent aging.  One of the things that age visibly on women is their lips, and while I’m not a total wrinkle fest yet, I am 32 and starting to see the lines that will form if my family doesn’t get off my back and let me take a nap once in a while.  (Ok I’m kidding…. no, not really.)

All of their products are Certified Organic and contain no icky parabens, synthetic ingredients or fragrances. I am really curious about the hair products, as you all know we are always on a quest for better hair care… but a bottle of Hair Cleanser is $39. The Lip Delivery Nutrition is $17.  If this stuff is as anti-aging as they say it is, it just might be worth the price.

The lovely ladies at one of our favorite organic beauty blogs Fig+Sage are doing a really great giveaway of Earth Mama Angel Baby Breastfeeding Support Kit. We’ve been long time lovers of all the Earth Mama Angel Baby products and their commitment to providing safe products to treat mom and baby. The Breastfeeding Kit they are giving away (in honor of Breast Cancer Awareness Month!) contains Milkmaid Tea , Natural Nipple Butter, Booby Tubes, and Bosom Buddies (a $45 value of products!). You can enter until October 29th, 2008, check out how on their blog Fig+Sage.

Further, if you haven’t seen Fig+Sage yet it’s a great resource and full of eco-fabulous finds!

A few months ago, my husband was in Boston, and stumbled across this eco-boutique. Knowing my passion for girly things and my new passion for girly things that are better for my skin, he perused and came home with a couple of products from the Aromafloria line. What, doesn’t every woman’s husband go searching for eco friendly beauty products for their wife?

He bought me the pomegranate salt glow scrub which smells heavenly. It makes me look forward to taking baths again. It’s VERY fragrant with essential oils, which I do like. I wish they also made it in a sugar scrub, because the salt does tend to dry out my skin, leaving it feeling tight. On second thought, maybe the firming qualities isn’t a bad thing. But as a general rule, salt is drying. So I use this in moderation.

Aromafloria’s products are made with organic (when possible) essential oils, as well as fair trade, when possible. They’re also free from icky preservatives and petrochemicals, making your indulgence guilt free.

Nature's ParadiseI picked up a travel set of products from Nature’s Paradise not too long ago.  I was intrigued in this Certified Organic product line and they had a vast array of yummy smells to pick from.  I loaded up on Creamy Coconut Lotion (very moisturizing and tropical smelling), Tropical Mango Body Cream and their Pomegranate Love Body Wash.

This company has a wide range of body care products and if you look at the ingredients label on any product, it looks more like a fresh fruit brunch menu rather than an ingredients list.  I think one of my favorite products in the Creamy Coconut Lotion which is a really rich creamy lotion that absorbs quick and leaves you feeling almost powdery soft and smelling like fresh coconuts.  And check out the ingredients:

Organic Coconut Oil, Organic Shea Butter, Organic Jojoba Oil, Organic Sunflower Oil, Organic Arrowroot Powder, Organic Liquid Lecithin, Organic Coconut Extract, Organic Clarified Lemon Juice, Water

It doesn’t get much more natural than that! I looooove the smell. I have a small crush on their travel size body wash too because it comes in a foam pump so I’ve been using it up at the gym.  I hate dragging loofahs or washcloths with me and the instant foam makes getting in a quick spa treatment possible.  Who doesn’t like to smell of fresh pomegranates after a workout?

All of Nature’s Paradise products are Certified Organic, are completely Vegan, not tested on animals, and free of icky synthetic ingredients, petrochemicals or artifical fragrances.  Just pure awesome natural products.  Nature’s Paradise carries a whole Baby Line as well.  I haven’t tried them but I hear Jessica Alba has!

Get Yours: Pick up any of their fabulous products on their website!

Here we are at the end of John Master’s week!  I’ve loved sharing these products with you.  But I saved my favorite for last.  And that would be the sweet orange styling gel.   I tend to hate gels or hair spray because of the crunchy factor, but given that my hair is so fine, it’s a necessary evil.  But with this stuff, not only can I run my fingers through my hair if I so desired (I don’t, as I risk looking like Sideshow Bob if I do), but it holds up all day.

When I get out of the shower and start my hair styling routine, I get kind of giddy when it’s finally time to use this because holy mother, it smells so good.  Like fresh clementines.   I have to smell it several times before and during application.  Citrus smells make me happy and energized, so it’s no wonder it’s a staple in my regimen.

My next goal is to invest in the face and skin care products as I seem to have a handle on the hair care products.   They’re all fabulous.  I think you get that right now.  And really, you just want to get to the good stuff.   Like the giveaway details.

I’ve never been a big pomade fan.  I don’t like sticky products in my hair.  I don’t have the right texture or type of hair to warrant using conventional pomades.  I suppose the fact that I have long hair, I don’t generally see the need for one.   I mainly bought this in the interest of… science, yeah that’s it, science.

I was pleasantly surprised that this stuff is almost a balm, and in fact, because it’s not sticky at all, you can definitely use this on your skin as a balm as well.   Even though it’s greasy, it doesn’t leave my hair feeling greasy.  It softens it up well when I need a little extra product to tame the mane.   I don’t use this every day, but when I do use it, it’s works well and because it’s a nice lotion alternative, I don’t have to waste.  I simply rub the rest of it into my skin.

A 2 ounce tin will run you about $20, which I know seems steep, but most salon quality products are going to cost you.  And their products work very well,  which is why I stand behind them.   I just use so much less, which in the long run is actually saving me money.

Get It: Order the hair pomade directly off of John Master’s website.

Tomorrow’s last review will contain all the information regarding the giveaway.   Including extra chances to win!

Because of the nature of my hair (read: weird), I tend to need a defrizzer to straighten it.  I leave it curly most of the time, but when I want it straight, I put a dab of the nourishment defrizzer and all is right in the world.  I also use a tiny bit on my ends when I leave it curly to make them look more even.  It helps control the fly aways and controls the mushroom head puff that I get from blowing my hair out.

The serum itself is different than your traditional serums because it uses essential oils as fragrance as well as real olive oil, unlike the traditional serums, which use a synthetic polymer type ingredient.   Olive oil has great properties for your hair and skin.  It’s great for diaper rash,  as a deep conditioning treatment for really dry processed hair, and it’s also good for your nails, to name a few uses.

Because it uses olive oil, you really REALLY only need a drop or two, otherwise, you will have oily hair.   The smell of this product is absolutely heavenly.  It smells like fresh rosemary.  So if you like rosemary, you’ll probably like this product.

By now you’re probably thinking, “Statia, do you really use ALL of these products?”  And truthfully (and somewhat shamefully, because I am a sucker for good hair products), yes I actually do use all of these products.   I might not be as much of an expert in makeup as Kathy.  I mean, I can hold my own, but I am an expert in hair products, because I’m always on the lookout for something that will make my hair look salon fabulous (when I actually take the time to look salon fabulous, I am a mother of a toddler after all).   I’m extremely picky about my hair products.

Get it: You can purchase this product as well as all John Masters products directly from their website.

And the big day is almost here.  We’ll be revealing the big John Masters giveaway tomorrow!  So stay tuned.

I have to say that I still have a hard time with the lack of lather in chemical free shampoos.   It took me a long time to get used to it, and while I’ve adjusted, it’s still not my favorite thing.  And if you’re making the switch, you have to realize that without the addition of SLS’s or other petrochemicals, you’re not going to find the lather that you would with conventional shampoos.   But with time, you will become accustomed.   If there’s one thing I can say, it’s that lather, doesn’t necessarily mean it’s getting your hair cleaner.  In fact, we’ve become programmed to think that, but in reality, what it’s really doing is stripping your hair of all of the good things that it needs.

Again, it took me a long time to find something suitable for my hair, and once I tried the Avocado and Lavender Intensive Conditioner, I knew that the rest of the products had to work equally as well.

I settled on the Zinc & Sage Shampoo with conditioner.   It has a hint of vanilla scent to it, which I really like and it does lather a little bit better than some other shampoos that I’ve tried (but don’t expect anything like you’re used to).   It doesn’t leave my hair feeling stringy or dry and I don’t need gobs of it to get some lather.  Another thing I’ve noticed is that this is one of the only shampoos I can use when I want to blow my hair straight and my hair still looks like my old school Redken days.

If you’re looking to make the switch to a chemical free conditioner, here are a few tips to help you make the switch:

  • Give it some time.  It’s going to be an adjustment.  It could take upwards of a couple of months for you to find something that works for you.  But be patient.
  • Use less.  Sure there are other less expensive shampoos out there but you still don’t need that much shampoo.  We always seem to think that more is better, when in reality, it’s not.
  • Invest in some samples.   Don’t want to purchase a full sized bottle?  We don’t blame you.  It can get pretty pricey (believe me, our wallets have felt it).  Look for samples, or email a company and see if you can purchase them for a small fee.   That way you don’t end up wasting a whole bottle of shampoo because you hate it.

Get it: You can purchase this shampoo and all of John Masters products directly from their website.

And of course, keep reading, because we’ll be announcing a huge giveaway on Friday.
