Got another e-mail from Toys”R”Us and thought I’d share with everyone. (I know I’ve been quiet recently, but that will hopefully change soon.)
Dear Valued Guest,
We hope this letter finds you well and enjoying the summer. Here at Toys”R”Us, Inc., we continue to work hard to ensure we are doing everything possible to help you keep your children safe. And so, it is with great pleasure that I share the news that our company is partnering with Safe Kids Worldwide, the world’s leading childhood injury prevention organization, to provide parents and caregivers with valuable information about keeping kids safe during times when they are at most risk of accidental injuries.
Working with Safe Kids Worldwide, we will create comprehensive childhood safety campaigns to help educate parents about injury prevention. Our initial efforts will focus on:
- Summer Safety: Ride-on toys, water, backyard, bicycle and street safety
- Baby Safety: Childproofing the home, and tub and crib safety
- Halloween Safety: Safety tips for choosing costumes and trick-or-treating
- Holiday Toy Safety: Gift selection, proper assembly and safe play tips for the holiday season
- Travel Safety: Car seat and child passenger safety and tips for childproofing unfamiliar places
With school out for the summer, kids of all ages are taking to backyards, streets, pools, and parks, as they try to savor every moment of fun in the sun. For important ways you can keep your kids safe during these not-so-lazy days of summer, I invite you to take a look at our summer safety tips (click here to view now). These, and other safety tips, will be available year-round on our dedicated Safety Website: www.Toysrus.com/Safety.
We are proud to partner with Safe Kids Worldwide, an organization that has contributed significantly to a decline in the number of childhood injuries and deaths by educating parents and caregivers about potential risks and dangers. They share in our commitment to the safety of children and families.
We hope that our Safety website continues to be a valuable resource for you as a parent or caregiver. Please check back often for additional information on keeping children safe.
On behalf of the “R”Us family, I wish you a safe and happy summer.
Gerald L. Storch
Chairman and CEO

I’m going to reserve comments until I take a closer look at the site they’ve set up. But at least they appear to be making an effort.

Toys R Us Introduces Natural Toys
Filed Under Eco-Mama, Green Mama, Toy Safety
We just got word that Toys R Us is now carrying some natural wood toys. They claim that these toys are forest-friendly and bear the Forest Stewardship Council’s seal of certification.
While they only carry about a half dozen of these toys, they’ll probably add more as time goes on (and if they’re popular enough). Toys R Us also claims the items are chemical-free and crafted from replenishable materials.
The toys range in price from $9.99-24.99. There’s not much information there yet (on their site), as every description is pretty much the same marketing blurb.
Once we get more info – and maybe some independent reviews – we’ll let you know.

Toys R Us Going BPA Free by End of 2008
The toy monster Toys R Us said Monday they’ll be phasing out all baby bottles and feeding products containing Bisphenol-a by the end of the year. This is nothing short of good news that chain stores are taking this seriously. From a Washington Post article:
Statement by Toys R Us spokesman Bob Friedland “Toys”R”Us, Inc. is committed to the safety of all its customers and is vigilant about staying current with emerging scientific and other thinking about ingredients in products sold in its stores. While the FDA has not changed its position on the safety of products made with Bisphenol-A (BPA), in light of growing consumer concerns on this topic, the company has been working with manufacturers to phase out all baby bottles and other baby feeding products containing BPA in its Toys”R”Us and Babies”R”Us stores nationwide. This process is ongoing and is expected to be completed before the end of 2008.”
Also going BPA Free is Walmart by the beginning of 2009. We suspect other chains will follow suit in the coming days/weeks.

I’ve gotten some reports from parents who have successfully returned, for store credit, bottles that contain BPA at Babies R Us. This includes used items as well as new and I’ve been told you may not need a receipt. A few readers over at Freebies 4 Mom have reported successful receipt-less returns, however it is my understanding that each store may have a different policy. With so many moms recently emailing us to question whether they should bother spending the money on new bottles, this may come as good news.
My unsolicited advice when going this route:
- Call your local Babies R Us store and ask what their policy is on BPA product returns
- Ask to speak to the manager to clarify what policy they are following and what you need to bring to receive a store credit/return.
- Bring bottles and cups in the store clean and bring receipts if you have them.
- Bring our BPA Free Bottle and Cup Cheat Sheet with you to make sure you’re buying BPA Free replacements.
I’m going off the assumption that they won’t provide this perk forever so I encourage you to get on it if you want to make a change to BPA Free. Let us know how it went!

When my son was too big for his infant seat, I went crazy trying to find the safest car seat to graduate him to. I scoured Consumer Reports and tried to pry information out of Babies R Us sales people (they aren’t allowed to disclose what seat is the best) and interviewed friends with bigger kids. I eventually settled on a Britax Marathon. It rated well and would have him taken care of until 65 lbs came. Lucky for me they rate fairly well on HealthyCar.org.
I was pleased with the Britax Marathon… until I had the opportunity to test run a new Britax Boulevard CS which just became available at Babies R Us in July. Britax has gone a step further to improve the safety of their car seats to address the harness latch system and beef up the side impact protection. Britax has implemented their Click & Safe™ snug harness indicator, which is supposed to reduce the common misuses of the tightening mechanism of the harness belts. On older seats, like the one I had (Britax Marathon) you buckle the child in and then pull a strap between the legs to make the whole system fit snug. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration found 59 percent of all harness straps to be dangerously loose… many times due to operator error. I can’t tell you how many times I looked back to notice my son sitting upright rather than snug on the chair… forcing me to pull over and readjust so he’s be in tighter. The Click & Safe ™ snug harness indicator is now the solution to help reduce that.
Now, once the child is buckled in, pulling the Click & Safe harness strap, you hear a brief “click click” indicating the strap is secured tight and will remain so. From a personal standpoint, this is a little tougher to pull than the older models but it does secure a bit tighter and doesn’t loosen as the child wiggles around.
The other feature they’ve added is Britax’s revolutionary True Side Impact Protection™ with deep side walls and head support to provide advanced protection in side impact collisions. One in four of all motor vehicle crashes that involve children occur from the side, and these crashes result in a significantly higher injury rate than front or rear crashes.
Again, from a personal use standpoint, I like the fact that there is more head protection with this seat, and frivolously, my son likes to rest his head on them so car trips are a little more comfortable for him.
The feature my husband loves is its easy-turn knob adjusts the headrest and harness height without having to remove the seat from the vehicle. No more taking the seat out and rethreading the straps for 20 minutes. The headrest and strap height adjust in a quick knob turn.

I really love the quality and safety performance of this car seat and it just looks cool… not to mention it’s made in the USA and Britax rates well in HealthyCar.org so it’s a seat I can stand behind.
