It’s Toxic Limbo time! Sing with us, “All around the natural world, gonna get the toxins out!” How low can YOU go when it comes to safe, natural personal care products? Take the Earth Mama How Low Can You Go Challenge to find out!
Here’s the challenge:
Gather some of the most common pregnancy and baby care products you use regularly on your pregnant body or on your baby. You

can include shampoo, lotions, soaps, diaper cream, stretch mark oil, hemorrhoid cream, etc. Go to the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics’ Skin Deep database and enter a product name in the search field (for example, Angel Baby Shampoo & Body Wash). Look for the Hazard
Score for that product. The Hazard Score tells you the toxicity rating: 0 is lowest, 10 the most toxic. Click the product if you want to see specifically which ingredients add up to create that score. If your product isn’t listed, ask yourself why. Is there something in the ingredients list that the company might not want you to see? If your product isn’t listed, you can enter individual ingredients to check their toxicity rating.
Add up the Skin Deep toxicity rating for all the personal care products that you use on a daily basis on your pregnant or nursing body, or on your baby, to find out what your score is. Then answer these questions.
- What was your Skin Deep toxicity rating score?
- Were you surprised with the score and/or ingredients?
- What would you like your score to be?
Don’t worry – there are no right or wrong answers, and everyone wins when mamas are informed and empowered. The biggest surprise is how high the toxin score can be, even for products that are labeled “natural” or “organic.” The only way to lower your score is to know what to look for, and there’s a whole tricky business trying to trick busy mamas with unclear labeling. That’s why Earth Mama supports the Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011.
Please Take Action!
The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 needs your support! The Safe Cosmetics Act of 2011 (H.R.2359) is designed to give the U.S. Food and Drug Administration authority to ensure that personal care products are free of harmful ingredients and that ingredients are fully disclosed. It’s pretty simple, right? Earth Mama Angel Baby is hoping you’ll use this handy action tool from our friends at the Campaign for Safe Cosmetics to tell your rep to close the loopholes that allow “cancer-causing chemicals in baby shampoo, hormone disruptors in fragrance and lead in lipstick.”

My score is 34 :/ Not only did I petition for the Safe Cosmetics Act, but I shared the link with all of my google+ and fb friends!
My score is 28. I petitioned for the Safe Cosmetics Act, but will be sharing with my friends, too. Never had used the Skin Deep Data Base before, so thanks for sharing!
1.)took the How Low Can You Go Challenge
My kids’ scores are MUCH lower, so that makes me feel good, at leastzaz
2.)contacted my representative
3.)My score is a 19…
My score was 20, not too bad…but it could be better. I signed the petition too, and sent it to my friends and family.
I scored a 5 for the kiddos since I found skindeep awhile ago, thank goodness! I have also contacted my rep Fred Upton.
I discovered skin deep data base when I got pregnant and decide to stop using all my personal care products. Now my score is 2 and my 3 week old baby’s score is 1. I only use dr bronner’s baby mild castile soap on him. I use the same soap, do the no-poo method (baking soda/water mix to wash hair, apple cider vinegar/water mix to rinse), coconut oil to moisturize my skin (and it can be used for diaper rash), and crystal deodorant. I love not using all those chemicals, it’s healthy and it’s cheaper!
My score is 17.
I contacted my representative.
Thanks so much for sharing your knowledge with us!
I repeatedly petition for the Act every year. As for scores, my kids are a 6 on most days which I feel pretty good about – my score is a lot higher (not all of my products were on the site so hard to say for sure, since I know that their totals for all the ingredients do not add up to their total for a product), but at least feel good knowing it’s a lot lower than it was just a few months ago and I am constantly looking for new lower score personal products.
I combined what I could find of my and my baby’s products and scored 11. I was very disappointed to find medium scores on what I thought were some of the safer products out there.
I contacted my local rep (and now I know what he looks like X-D )!
My score is 20 but my child’s is also MUCH lower, thankfully. I still pay closer attention to her stuff than mine! I also did the petition contacting our representative. Thanks!!
My score is 6 and my son’s score is 3. I’m so glad I found the cosmetic database a while ago. Definitely contacting my rep!!!!!
My DD’s scores a 6 if I use all products every day including sunblock. On a daily basis probably closer to a 3, maybe 4. Amazing! I am scared to calculate mine. Thanks for this challenge!
We use Whole Foods shampoos and body lotions, which are not listed. But otherwise, my score is 9. My baby’s score is also 5. Ever since I discovered Safemama and Lovely safemama while pregnant, I’ve switched to safer and more natural products. I was surprised Triple Paste scores a 3. That stuff works really well! I may switch back to lanolin or jojoba oil once I’m done using the jar.
My babe scored an 8 and I scored much higher, so I’ll have to work on those ASAP! I contacted my rep and sent the link to friends and family. Thanks!

Wow! What a great reminder to check the cumulative products! My daughter gets a 0-5, depending on the day, but my score is 10-34, depending on the day — some of the products I’d thought were great are not; I’m so glad I checked! Thanks!!
My stuff added up to 14. I thought I was doing better than that! Oh well, back to reading labels. And I emails my rep through the website
My scores are: a 3 for Kiss My Face shampoo ( use once a week), 2 for Pure & natural hand soap, and a 2 for Toms Maine deodorant.
Kids stuff: Burts bee Shampoo- not sure if its 1 or 4 ( use biweekly- even monthly), Toms Maine silly strawberry tp a 2, Sunscreen-california baby a 2.
Not too bad.
I contacted Larry K.
I’m going to choose some new products based on the database since we’re running low on some, maybe we can make a shift in an even better direction! Thanks!
My Skin Deep score is 14. I was surprised at the score of the hand soap I’m using, but I know this score is much lower than it would have been two years ago. I have been trying to use only natural products in my home since then. It’s been a process, to say the least (and thanks, Safe Mama, for all the help I’ve gotten from your site!).
I emailed my state rep. through the link you provided, and forwarded information to several of my friends.
I’m a 10! o man! I e-mailed my congressional rep!
Our scores ranged from 3 to 10, depending on the day. I’m very particular about what we use but I’m struggling to find hair care products that will still make my hear presentable and manageable. We’re African American, so moisturizing products are very important for our hair. I’m always on the lookout for great products! Thanks!
My score is pretty low as baby is allergic so I am very picky as to what I use on him: 8.
Wrote my petition to Joe Walsh.
Thanks for the fun giveaway.
