I am always astounded and impressed with the level of safety and the constant strive to exceed safety standards that Britax exhibits as a car seat company. I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to tour the Britax facility this year and witness a crash test of the new Britax Marathon 70. Seeing it in real life, in real time, really resonates the importance of proper car seat usage and safety.
The new generations of Britax car seats feature some really amazing advancements in their basic car seat technology. The number one cause of injury for little kids in a crash is head trauma. This is always a main focus when the engineers at Britax develop car seats. Without getting too technical and wordy, here are a few of the new technologies that have been integrated into the new car seats:
Integrated Steel Bars: The new generation of Britax seats now features Integrated Steel Bars which can minimize the risk of your child being propelled forward and hitting the back of the vehicle seat in front of them. The Integrated Steel Bars provide a further solid connection to the car, reducing the forward movement that occurs during a crash
SafeCell Technology: SafeCell is a waffle-like component in the base of the seat that acts as a shock absorber. It compresses in a crash, lowering the center of gravity thus reducing the forward propelling motion that forces the child forward, minimizing the risk of injury.
Energy-absorbing Versa-Tether: I’d like to stress the importance of top tethering your car seats. It’s true that all Britax seats are crash tested and exceed NHTSA standards for non-tethered seats. But the differences are astounding to examine closer. The BRITAX energy-absorbing Versa-Tether is attached to two points at the top of the seat and attach to an anchor in your car in both rear and forward facing positions. The Versa-Tether helps anchor the seat to minimize the movement and slow down the motion of your child during a crash and also absorbs crash forces away from your child in the event of an accident. It also greatly reduces the forward movement of your child’s head in a crash, minimizing the risk of head injury. Bottom line, top tether!
These are of course additions to the seat on top of the already existing safety features such as the 5-Point harness and True Side Impact Protection present in all their car seats.
Mom Features I Love
Ok so it’s SAFE. Beyond safe. But what about day to day functionality? I’ve found that the seat itself looks really stylish (The sample I received had their crimson fabric) but now that the seat accommodates children forward facing up to 70lbs, it feels considerably roomier and very soft and comfortable. The 5 point harness operates easily and I know it’s secure and tight enough. I also love that they now made the shoulder strap pads removable with velcro. Thank you Britax!
The seat was very easy to install which is KEY because something like 80-90% of car seats are installed improperly. I very much appreciate that Britax has figured out ways to increase the weight capacity on their seats so that you can get the maximum life from your car seat without sacrificing safety.
What’s also a great Mom-feature is the ease of adjustment. You know how fast kids grow… and long gone are the days of re-threading your car seat straps to fit them properly. Now it’s as simple as moving the side-impact protection head rest via a grip handle behind the seat. Simply, lift, pull up and release. Done. That’s it. I have no patience to be smashed in the back seat wrestling a car seat. These seats are a cinch to install and adjust.

Britax Marathon 70 and how it fits rear-facing in a Honda Pilot

Britax Marathon 70 rear-faces up to 40lbs and a seated shoulder height of 9 - 16.75 inches (from rump to shoulder) - whichever comes first.
I’ve heard some rumblings about the new generation seats being a bit smaller than the older models that people love. However, Britax increased the rear facing weight max to 40lbs for the Marathon 70. I think this is where the size and shape of your child falls into play. Granted, my test subject is only 13 months old and doesn’t come close to the 40 lbs weight limit but there is a tremendous amount of space to fill before he is too big to fit rear facing. I’m a supporter of keeping a child rear facing as long as possible but I inevitably end up switching to forward facing by age 2 simply because my kids tend to be long and they get extremely uncomfortable with their legs all folded up. With any seat you consider buying, I’d definitely test the seat out first to make sure it is going to fit your car and your needs regarding rear-facing positioning if that is a selling point for you. I think it’s also important to remember that each child reaches the max height and weight requirements at different times in their life.
But don’t just take my word for it. The awesome guys at DadLabs did a really cool video that demonstrates the physics behind the design of the car seats:

I learned that 2/3 of injuries to kids during a crash is to their head and that during a crash, even buckled properly, a child can hit their head on the back of the seat in front of them.
Leading cause of death for kids under 12 in car accidents are head injuries. Lowering the center of gravity increases stability.
Fingers crossed for a great giveaway!
Thank you for the informative article and video. Car seat safety is so important & I love Britax for making this such a priority. My son will be 3 and still rear-facing because I’ve taken the time to educate myself about car seat safety with videos like the this one from Britax. I have a new baby on the way, due Oct 1st & winning a quality car seat like this would be awesome!
Here’s what I learned:
Head injury in car crashes is the leading cause of death in children 0-12
Britax lowered the center of gravity in their carseats alowing the child to sit lower resulting in more stability in the event of a crash.
Britax has enforced their carseats with integrated steal bars strengthening the connection to the vehicle & reducing forward flexing during a crash.
Britax has patent pending, ground breaking safe cell technology, upon impact the safe cells are designed to compress further lowering the center of gravity, countering forces that push the seat forward minimizing the movement of my child during a crash. The results exceed federal standards for head excursion & make Britax the best in class for safety.
This family loves you Britax!
I learned that Britax reinforces the frame with steal bars to improve safety and strengthen the connnection to the vehicle. They also perform twice as many tests as required for them to do so. I would love to win the Britax Marathon 70!
Thanks
I learned that even with a correctly installed forward facing carseat a child’s head can hit the back of the seat in front of them in an accident. SCARY. I did not know that! I also learned that Britax lowers the center of gravity, minimizing the movement of the child in a crash. Very cool!

I’m glad to have seen this video! I have older britax car seats, and I am impressed by the changes they’ve made. Here’s what I learned:
Head trauma often occurs from a child hitting the back of the seat in front (as improbable as that seems!) Considering this, Britax is focusing on ways to improve head safety, and reduce head excursion in crashes. They redesigned the seat to include technologies to lower the center of gravity to make a child more stable (the safecell), they have reinforced the seats with steel to make them flex less in a crash, and they have a staged release in the versa tether system that helps prevent the top of the child seat from moving too far forward.

I learned that the front seat is the most dangerous spot for little heads, I previously would not have guessed that. I learned a lot of about the design of the new Britax seat and how safety truly does seem to be the number one goal of the company. Good goal for good business. We already have Britax seats but I am going to check out the new models as we are close to transitioning into the next round of seats.

I learned that head injuries in car crashes are the leading cause of death in children 0-12, the safe cell technology increases stability by lowering the center of gravity in the case of a crash, the integrated steel hrs reduce forward flexing, and the Versa tether slows forward movement.
I did not know that hitting the front seat was the number one cause of child death in an accident – nor how much those seemingly sturdy seating can FLEX. Yipes.
Thanks

I have never doubted the safety and reliability of Britax car seats! And we have never used anything but a Britax. My 4 1/2 year old is still in his Marathon and we are looking to replace the Companion with another Marathon for his 11 month old sister.
Britax has improved upon their carseats focusing on reducing forward flexing during a crash as head injury in car crashes is the leading cause of death in children ages 0-12. One of the ways they do this by using safe cell technology which compresses upon impact, further lowering the center of gravity and therefore reducing forward flexing. Another way is by reinforcing plastic with steel in the carseat frame which strengthens the carseats connection to the vehicle further reducing forward flexing.
Thank you SafeMama! You are a wonderful resource that I have used countless times over the last few years!

I learned a car seat could move forward enough during a crash for a child to hit their head on the seat in front of them. I had no idea. I also learned a car seat flexes if involved in a crash and that plastic isn’t really strong enough. Reinforcing with steal is a true improvement. Thanks Britax!
As a first time mom to a 4 month old, almost everything I hear is new to me! I learned that 2/3 of car injuries to infants are head injuries and that the back side of the front seat is what causes most injuries. Britax has lowered the center of gravity for increased stability. What a great car seat!

Two things I learned:
1> Lowering the center of gravity makes things more stable so the Britax safe cell technology compression lowers the center of gravity to prevent which minimizes movement of child in crash resulting in best of class for safety.
2> The versa teether strap absorbs the forces in a crash to slow the forward motion of the seat/child.
Thanks!

I had no idea that even if they are in a car seat, the leading cause of death for 12 and under in a car crash is due to head injuries caused by hitting the seat in front of them. I always figured since the car seat is strapped in so securely and the child is strapped into the car seat with a 5 point harness that they would be safe.
I like that Britax has addressed this issue with the Safe Cell Technology, energy-absorbing steel bars, and Versa-Tether. By lowering the center of gravity with the Safe Cell Technology, forward propulsion is minimized. I never thought about that before. It also makes sense to add steel bars to provide extra strength and support to the car seat. I love the LATCH system (even though my car is not equipped with it) and the Versa-Tether seems to improve the LATCH system that much more.
Last night, after realizing the car seat we have for our DS due in 2 weeks will not fit in our tiny backseat with the base, my DH went to BRU to try all the seats they have. He found the only car seat that would fit is the Britax Marathon 70. I for one am happy that this model is smaller than older ones. Imagine my joy when I found out all the safety features this one has and the technology that has gone into it.
Great website, btw.

I learned that you can reinforce PVC by adding steel, and that most head injuries in car crashes (for ages 0-12) are caused by the back of the front seat.
1. I was surprised to learn that Britax completes 2x the tests required by the NTSA, exceeding “standards” to make children safer and 2. Britax has redesigned their already top-rated car seats to lower the center of gravity and reduce the tendency for forward propulsion/head excursion. Brilliant!
Here are the two things I learned from the video:
1. Most head injuries involving a child in a car accident come from the child’s head hitting the backside of the front seat. Britex’s car seats’ designs minimize the forward movement of the child in the case of a car crash.
2. With the design technology used in Britex car seat, there is a lower center of gravity which prevents forward motion of the child towards the back of the front seat. The reinforcement with steel bars also strengthens the connection to the vehicle also decreasing forward motion.
2/3 of injuries to a child in a car accident are attributed to head trauma.
The backside of the front seat is the most dangerous aspect of a car accident.
Lowering the center of gravity improves safety and stability.

great video. I love Britax and it’s commitment to safety. I learned that head injury is the leading cause of death for 0-12 year olds in car crashes and that lowering the center of gravity minimizes forward movement during a car crash.
While I currently own a Britax car seat for my two year old son, I would love to have another for my next baby, too. I know that this is the BEST car seat out there.
The two things I learned from the Dadlabs video are that the new Britax has something called Safe Cell built into it that helps lower the center of gravity of the car seat to keep children safer.
The new Britax also combines steel and plastic in its frame that makes it super strong. In the video it was demonstrated that this combo is strong enough to hold a 225 lb man!!
SafeCell technology, developed by Britax, lowers the center of gravity, counteracting the foreward momentum of your child in a crash, keeping them safer. The steel reinforcing bars in the Britax seats strengthens the connection to your vehicle as well as counteracts forward flexion during a crash.
Things I learned from the Dadlabs video:
Kids can (and often do!) sustain head injuries in crashes from hitting the seat in front of them, which was surprising to me. Also, Britax lowered the seat’s center of gravity by putting “safe cells” underneath the child’s bum to make it the seat more stable.

Two of the things I learned from the video:
1) Safe Cell Technology – Revolutionary Britax design that upon impact they are designed to compress, further lowering the center of gravity and counteracting the forces that push the seat fortward which miminizes the child moving forward during the crash.
