I am always astounded and impressed with the level of safety and the constant strive to exceed safety standards that Britax exhibits as a car seat company.  I was fortunate enough to have had the chance to tour the Britax facility this year and witness a crash test of the new Britax Marathon 70.  Seeing it in real life, in real time,  really resonates the importance of proper car seat usage and safety.

The new generations of Britax car seats feature some really amazing advancements in their basic car seat technology.  The number one cause of injury for little kids in a crash is head trauma.  This is always a main focus when the engineers at Britax develop car seats.  Without getting too technical and wordy, here are a few of the new technologies that have been integrated into the new car seats:

Integrated Steel Bars: The new generation of Britax seats now features Integrated Steel Bars which can minimize the risk of your child being propelled forward and hitting the back of the vehicle seat in front of them.  The Integrated Steel Bars provide a further solid connection to the car, reducing the forward movement that occurs during a crash

SafeCell Technology: SafeCell is a waffle-like component in the base of the seat that acts as a shock absorber.  It compresses in a crash, lowering the center of gravity thus reducing the forward propelling motion that forces the child forward, minimizing the risk of injury.

Energy-absorbing Versa-Tether: I’d like to stress the importance of top tethering your car seats.  It’s true that all Britax seats are crash tested and exceed NHTSA standards for non-tethered seats.  But the differences are astounding to examine closer. The BRITAX energy-absorbing Versa-Tether is attached to two points at the top of the seat and attach to an anchor in your car in both rear and forward facing positions.  The Versa-Tether helps anchor the seat to minimize the movement and slow down the motion of your child during a crash and also absorbs crash forces away from your child in the event of an accident.  It also greatly reduces the forward movement of your child’s head in a crash, minimizing the risk of head injury.  Bottom line, top tether!

These are of course additions to the seat on top of the already existing safety features such as the 5-Point harness and True Side Impact Protection present in all their car seats.

Mom Features I Love

Ok so it’s SAFE.  Beyond safe. But what about day to day functionality? I’ve found that the seat itself looks really stylish (The sample I received had their crimson fabric) but now that the seat accommodates children forward facing up to 70lbs, it feels considerably roomier and very soft and comfortable.  The 5 point harness operates easily and I know it’s secure and tight enough.  I also love that they now made the shoulder strap pads removable with velcro.  Thank you Britax!

The seat was very easy to install which is KEY because something like 80-90% of car seats are installed improperly.  I very much appreciate that Britax has figured out ways to increase the weight capacity on their seats so that you can get the maximum life from your car seat without sacrificing safety.

What’s also a great Mom-feature is the ease of adjustment.  You know how fast kids grow… and long gone are the days of re-threading your car seat straps to fit them properly.  Now it’s as simple as moving the side-impact protection head rest via a grip handle behind the seat.  Simply, lift, pull up and release. Done. That’s it.   I have no patience to be smashed in the back seat wrestling a car seat. These seats are a  cinch to install and adjust.

Britax Marathon 70 and how it fits rear-facing in a Honda Pilot

Britax Marathon 70 rear-faces up to 40lbs and a seated shoulder height of 9 - 16.75 inches (from rump to shoulder) - whichever comes first.

I’ve heard some rumblings about the new generation seats being a bit smaller than the older models that people love.  However, Britax increased the rear facing weight max to 40lbs for the Marathon 70. I think this is where the size and shape of your child falls into play. Granted, my test subject is only 13 months old and doesn’t come close to the 40 lbs weight limit but there is a tremendous amount of space to fill before he is too big to fit rear facing.  I’m a supporter of keeping a child rear facing as long as possible but I inevitably end up switching to forward facing by age 2 simply because my kids tend to be long and they get extremely uncomfortable with their legs all folded up.  With any seat you consider buying, I’d definitely test the seat out first to make sure it is going to fit your car and your needs regarding rear-facing positioning if that is a selling point for you.  I think it’s also important to remember that each child reaches the max height and weight requirements at different times in their life.

But don’t just take my word for it.  The awesome guys at DadLabs did a really cool video that demonstrates the physics behind the design of the car seats:

Leading cause of death for kids under 12 in car accidents are head injuries. Lowering the center of gravity increases stability.

Fingers crossed for a great giveaway!

Thank you for the informative article and video. Car seat safety is so important & I love Britax for making this such a priority. My son will be 3 and still rear-facing because I’ve taken the time to educate myself about car seat safety with videos like the this one from Britax. I have a new baby on the way, due Oct 1st & winning a quality car seat like this would be awesome!

    Here’s what I learned:
Head injury in car crashes is the leading cause of death in children 0-12

Britax lowered the center of gravity in their carseats alowing the child to sit lower resulting in more stability in the event of a crash.

Britax has enforced their carseats with integrated steal bars strengthening the connection to the vehicle & reducing forward flexing during a crash.

Britax has patent pending, ground breaking safe cell technology, upon impact the safe cells are designed to compress further lowering the center of gravity, countering forces that push the seat forward minimizing the movement of my child during a crash. The results exceed federal standards for head excursion & make Britax the best in class for safety.

    This family loves you Britax!

Thanks so much for again sharing your insight on Britax car seats! My family cannot imagine using anything but the best when it comes to car seats, and Britax is it. No cost will ever outweight the safety of our children.

Loved this video too. I just forwarded it on to all my friends with children.

I learn from DadLabs that children 0-12 sustain head trauma as the #1 injury during a crash…due to hitting the seat in front of them! Newer Technology, like steel reinforced bars, Safecell (to lower center of gravity), and Energy absorbing Versa-Tether will help to reduce the impact of our children hitting the seat in front of them.

Thank you Britax, DadLabs and Safemama!

Thank you for this review! I currently use a Sunshine Radian 65 for my 2-yr-old but we are expecting again within the next few weeks and I was happy to learn that:

    1) This britax goes rear-facing up to 40 lbs and
    2) Head trauma is a major issue for children in crashes. I like the idea of these steel bars!

  117. Celeste on August 25th, 2010 11:08 pm

I learned that the front seat causes head trauma! I had no idea! When I’ve watched other crash test videos, they’ve never talked about the front seat danger! I also learned that Britax is starting to use steel bars in their seats! I’m a fan of Sunshine Kids car seats because they use steel bars and I’m sooo excited that Britax is using it now too! These new seats seem really safe!

I knew that head injury in car accidents was the leading cause of death in kids – what I didn’t know was that a child properly buckled into a car-seat can still hit the back of the seat in front. To me, that is terrifying!

It was awesome to learn that Britax car seats are reinforced with steel, and it seems an obviously smart move on their part.

Another brilliant move that I didn’t know about was how much lowering the center of gravity can affect the safety of a seat.

Basically, what I learned was that Britax is pretty much the best there is out there, and that I really want one! (well, two – but I’ll start with one ;) )

    Here’s what I learned:

In children ages 0-12, head injury is the leading cause of death in car accidents

Britax enforced carseats with steel bars to strengthen the connection to the car

  153. Tracy on August 26th, 2010 2:47 am

    I learned ALOT!
Britax does twice as much testing on their carseats than any other manufacturer.
Britax has totally redesigned their carseats, focusing on head safety. They have lowered the center of gravity and have a patent pending safe cell technology that lowers the seats center of gravity even more…I could go on. Lowering the center of gravity makes things more stable. Thanks for the video! And now I FINALLY know how to properly pronounce Britax!!!!

I learned why the versa tether is so important–I don’t think I ever really realized how it affected the car seat in a crash–I never knew that the most severe injuries are from the back of the seat in front of them and I am amazed at the techonology that allows the center of gravity to be lower during an accident. I have always had Britax car seats for my kids but am thinking it is worth purchasing the new one based on the improvements they have made for the new releases. Thanks for bringing this up!

I’m glad to have seen this video! I have older britax car seats, and I am impressed by the changes they’ve made. Here’s what I learned:

Head trauma often occurs from a child hitting the back of the seat in front (as improbable as that seems!) Considering this, Britax is focusing on ways to improve head safety, and reduce head excursion in crashes. They redesigned the seat to include technologies to lower the center of gravity to make a child more stable (the safecell), they have reinforced the seats with steel to make them flex less in a crash, and they have a staged release in the versa tether system that helps prevent the top of the child seat from moving too far forward.

I have never doubted the safety and reliability of Britax car seats! And we have never used anything but a Britax. My 4 1/2 year old is still in his Marathon and we are looking to replace the Companion with another Marathon for his 11 month old sister.

Britax has improved upon their carseats focusing on reducing forward flexing during a crash as head injury in car crashes is the leading cause of death in children ages 0-12. One of the ways they do this by using safe cell technology which compresses upon impact, further lowering the center of gravity and therefore reducing forward flexing. Another way is by reinforcing plastic with steel in the carseat frame which strengthens the carseats connection to the vehicle further reducing forward flexing.

Thank you SafeMama! You are a wonderful resource that I have used countless times over the last few years!

I had no idea that even if they are in a car seat, the leading cause of death for 12 and under in a car crash is due to head injuries caused by hitting the seat in front of them. I always figured since the car seat is strapped in so securely and the child is strapped into the car seat with a 5 point harness that they would be safe.

I like that Britax has addressed this issue with the Safe Cell Technology, energy-absorbing steel bars, and Versa-Tether. By lowering the center of gravity with the Safe Cell Technology, forward propulsion is minimized. I never thought about that before. It also makes sense to add steel bars to provide extra strength and support to the car seat. I love the LATCH system (even though my car is not equipped with it) and the Versa-Tether seems to improve the LATCH system that much more.

Last night, after realizing the car seat we have for our DS due in 2 weeks will not fit in our tiny backseat with the base, my DH went to BRU to try all the seats they have. He found the only car seat that would fit is the Britax Marathon 70. I for one am happy that this model is smaller than older ones. Imagine my joy when I found out all the safety features this one has and the technology that has gone into it.

    Great website, btw.

    1. I was surprised to learn that Britax completes 2x the tests required by the NTSA, exceeding “standards” to make children safer and 2. Britax has redesigned their already top-rated car seats to lower the center of gravity and reduce the tendency for forward propulsion/head excursion. Brilliant!

  361. Jennifer on September 3rd, 2010 4:28 pm

Here are the two things I learned from the video:

    1. Most head injuries involving a child in a car accident come from the child’s head hitting the backside of the front seat. Britex’s car seats’ designs minimize the forward movement of the child in the case of a car crash.

    2. With the design technology used in Britex car seat, there is a lower center of gravity which prevents forward motion of the child towards the back of the front seat. The reinforcement with steel bars also strengthens the connection to the vehicle also decreasing forward motion.

  362. Diana on September 3rd, 2010 4:49 pm

2/3 of injuries to a child in a car accident are attributed to head trauma.

Thank you for the video, our little one will outgrow the infant seat soon.

Yikes, I had no idea that a child in a properly installed car seat can still injure her head on the front seat! I didn’t know what exactly the VersaTether was for or how it could prevent head injuries. I liked the demonstration with the shelves – very illuminating. (I also didn’t know that DadLabs was kind of like Mythbusters for parents – fun!)

Steel reinforced car seat with squishy stuff to lower the center of gravity in an accident! I was going to buy britax marathon anyway because of the recline handle, the deep recline, cleanable seat liner, and comfy looking seat, I tried to sit in it but …

Now I know that because of my lowered center of gravity, namely my bottom, I’m safer than most people if I were to be in an accident. Also, britax definately didn’t make my smiley shaped closet rod.

    1. The seats are reinforced with the intergrated steal bars (to reduce forward flexing in a crash)
    2. The child sits lower in the seat with the theory of more stability in a crash.
    Love this seat!

I have never heard about foward flexing before, who knew that your childs head could hit the back of the front seat. I like that Britax uses steel enforcement and I didnt know that the position of your child in the car seat could make such an impact in the event of a crash. Thanks for the info.

  432. Barbara F. on September 4th, 2010 2:41 pm

Wow, what an informative and fabulous video! I did not know that the backside of the front seat was the main source of bad head impacts and the leading cause of death of children between the ages of 0-12. Britax has circumvented this problem by three changes to traditional car seats: lowered the center of gravity, reinforced the seat with integrated steel bars, and with their safe cell technology. Thank you for providing the tools and resources to constantly stay up to date with the latest safety products to keep our children safe!!!

Two of the things I learned from the video:

    1) Safe Cell Technology – Revolutionary Britax design that upon impact they are designed to compress, further lowering the center of gravity and counteracting the forces that push the seat fortward which miminizes the child moving forward during the crash.

    2) Versa Tether Strap – for head safety. The energy absoring versa tether is a staged release tether webbing to absorb crash forces and slows forward movement during the crash.

Having been in a car accident when I was a child where my head hit the back of the front seat and I suffered a concussion, I’m excited about the advancements Britax has made with their car seats.

  437. hippie4ever on September 4th, 2010 4:17 pm

2/3 of injuries, suffered by children, in car crashes are to the head and even children that are properly strapped in can impact the back of the seat in front of them (forward facing). Britax has introduced an innovative head safety car seat!

Love the safe cell technology and lower center of gravity too

Wow! Loved this video & learned so much! I’m forwarding the video to my friends. I just wish it explained if there was any difference between ff and RF with this new technology.

I have a rear facing 19m/o and would love to out her in a carseat of this quality!

    I learned:

Britax lowered the center of gravity in their carseats

Britax’s Intregrated steel bars strengthens connection to the vehicle reducing forward flexing

This will help to avoid a little one’s head from hitting the back of the front seat, which incidentally is the primary cause of head injury child suffer from in car accidents.

Head injuries are the leading cause of death for children 12 in car accidents
learned that 2/3s injuries to children during a crash is too their head–and even with correct installation a children’s heads are still hitting the front seat. :(

I would love to win this carseat for my grandbaby! The lowered center of gravity makes me feel more secure about traveling in the car with our precious treasure. And the integrated reinforced steel bars are a must for safety!!

Slowing my granbaby’s forward movement and keeping him free from harm is a real blessing! Thank you…for making us grandparents more secure!

My wife and I love Britax. We currently have a roundabout for our one year old and our 3 year old is in a Marathon. We would love to win this for our 5th child who will be moving out of the infant seat soon.
I learned that Britax has lowered the center of gravity on their seats and has integrated steel bars. I learned that they are doing this to better protect the childs head in a crash.
Thank you Britax for making such quality car seats!

I learned that with the safecell technology they lowered the center of gravity to make it more stable.
Also, that head injuries are the leading cause of death in children under 12 years old, that is why they are trying to protect the childs head better with the reinforced steel bars.
Would love to win this seat :) :)

I learned alot about Britax. I’ve been researching convertible seats because my son is about to move in to. I thought it is great that the video give great details of what the seat does. I learned that the Safe cells help lower the center of gravity, which make objects more stable and
Car seats are reinforced with steel bars because it is much stronger. Thanks for the info!
