A while back we did a quick write up of safer alternatives to lunch boxes when all that “lead in lunchboxes” hoopla went down.  Since then there are so many great alternatives to lunch boxes available that it totally warrants a new cheat sheet. Lunchboxes are perfect for little and big kids and help reduce waste that’s clogging up our environment.  Whether stainless steel, canvas or recyclable plastic is your thing – there is a lunch system for you.  No matter what age.  Note: This is not a comprehensive list – if you think a brand should be on here please let us know and we’ll verify it! Lunch Boxes, Bags and Lunch Systems

We looked high and low for lunch boxes and gear that was free of BPA, PVC, Phthalates and either claims to be lead-free or meets CPSIA testing standards for lead.  I’ve noted which brands claim what regarding lead. All of our picks are also free of Microban.   Here are our picks

I also encourage you to download the CHEJ 2010 Back to School PVC Free School Supplies shopping guide and the EWG Back to School Guide for more ideas on having a less toxic school year.

You absolutely need to add planetbox.

What about easylunchboxes.com? Do those meet the requirements?

  3. Melissa PHinney on August 5th, 2010 2:15 pm

    What about built NY?

Did you happen to look at Lands End? It’d be interesting to see some of the popular brands that did NOT make your list. Thanks for all you do!

I’m interested to know about dante beatrix lunch boxes. They have adorable designs BUT are they safe for our children?

I love your site and I know better for kids and the earth usually means a little bit more expensive but to advertise a lunchbox that costs $29.95 seems crazy! I would never support a company that rips it’s consumer off. I know everyone needs to make a profit but it is very hypocritical to be “earth friendly” but so selfish when it comes to making a profit. Just my opinion.

    Or what about LLBean?

@Robin – I don’t know which lunch box you are referring to but we aren’t advertising any of these. Just providing a list of companies that meet our requirements. I am also looking into (but have a hard time getting responses from some companies) other mainstream options as well. We received mass email asking what brands are the safest… not what’s the cheapest. The beauty is that you can buy or not buy whatever you want. There are varying price points in the list and you have the freedom to buy or support whichever company you prefer.

@Bonnie @christy I am going to look into both Lands End and Beatrix for you!

I think Built NY is lead free and toxin free too, check them out! I have one and it’s a bit pricey but defiantly worth it for the quality!

Love all of these lists! Just curious abt the yubo lunchbox – I see it on blogs all the time. It says bpa free, but not sure abt the other requirements. I have a few of the ones listed above, but always looking for a way to make lunch fun, easy & safe! Thanks!

If you really want to make a safe list, how about some companies who don’t use plastic or nylon, ie. Planetbox and Graze Organic? They should be on the list for sure!

  13. SafeMama Kathy on August 12th, 2010 2:10 pm

@jane zaron: PlanetBox is on the list. :) But I’ll definitely check into Graze Organic. I had not heard of them yet. Thanks!
