Suggestion Box: Help SafeMama Help You

January 5, 2010 by Kathy • Filed Under: Website News

As I am gearing up for several product reviews, I am starting to think about what else our readers want to know about.  I’ll continue to post any relevant information about toxics, product safety and news worthy items, and I have a few ideas for the coming months.  However I want to hear from you.  I’ll leave the comments open on this entry and I would love for our SafeMama readers to suggest anything you think would be a great help to new parents.  I’ll take any suggestions you have for me and I’ll consider them all!  I’ll do my best to take your ideas and publish what will benefit our readers.  Thank you all!

I breastfed my daughter until we got pregnant again and was no longer able to as a result of the pregnancy. As a result, I had to start my daughter on formula. I struggled if I should use nursery water or just boil water. And was wondering, your thoughts on it.

Would also, love to hear thoughts on car seats (with regards to the pollutants and other contaminants we are exposing our children to daily in the car). If there’s a seat that meets the requirements AND is green/toxin free would love to hear about it.

Please look into Dect technology, used in cordless phones (Dect 9.0 are the only ones that seem to be available these days) and baby monitors. I think there has been some research about the radiation they emit and issues like headaches and worse.

I search your sight constantly and have yet to find any info/products to use in a bathtub. Not the baby tubs, but the tubs in your bathroom. I searched frantically because i was putting my daughter in the big bath tub for the first time and wanted to clean all the grime etc. from using it as a shower but was unsure what products were safe.

Its too late for us, since we pulled the trigger already, but it might help someone else. I have a question about safer wall-to-wall carpet. We wanted our basement carpeted with a more eco-friendly type and I found the choices confusing. Just because a carpet is “green” is it necessarily safe? I mean half the time it was classified as green simply because it was made from recycled materials (like soda bottles) and in turn recyclable, as well. Are my kids safe crawling around on it? The truly safe carpeting (wool, etc.) was too cost prohibitive, unfortunately. Thanks in advance for any light you can shed on this topic.

i would like information on whether washing my baby’s bottles/dishes/utensils, etc. while wearing vinyl dishwashing gloves causes the PVC to leach.

I would love to get more ideas for healthy meals or snacks, how to keep chemicals out of your daily live with your children and eco friendly activities rather than product reviews especially from companies who give you their products because somehow I can´t help thinking they´re only doing it for the free advertising. Thanks for all the work!

I used Spoiled Mama products while I was pregnant and breast feeding. I feel in love with their ingredients and philosophy. You should check them out.

I was wondering if you knew how toxic the 100% pure product line was. I know it states in the name it is 100% but I could not find it on the Skin Deep database which really explains the toxic level. By me looking at the ingredients it looks like a 0 to 1 level but then again who am I? LOL. Thanks for all your hard work. I am in Canada but so many products are shared through the border that you a still a wonderful help to those of us north of the 49. Thanks again.

I struggle around meals…making, planning. I want to feed my family safe food, so i’m now avoiding everything in cans. Making food from scratch takes so much time, a commodity hard to come by with three little kids! Advice on how to meal plan, make food in batches, create meal co-ops???

    Love your blog!

We love 100% Pure! I use many of their products myself. Great ingredients and great products!

I am really irritated that my comment is not on here, yet. Why do you ask for comments when you sort them out and you only use the ones that you think fit in? I didn´t offend anyone, did I? This is the second time this happened to me…like I said very irritating…
I really like reading your site and have been doing it for a while now, too. I would be happy about hearing from you about this!

PS:This of course is not a comment. I just didn´t know any other way to contact you.

I’ve read that lots of baby clothing/bedding is treated with flame retardant chemicals. I know that the looser the garment, the more likely it’s been treated.

But do you have any definitive information on what brands/specific garments of certain brands are not treated with these chemicals? I’m 5 months pregnant and terrified to buy baby clothing!

I want to know more about the safety of the Whole Foods 365 brand (shampoo, soaps, etc.). We are on a tight budget and have a baby on the way and the 365 brand is so affordable. It, too, is not on Skin Deep. Another brand I would like to know about is Pure and Natural. We don’t live near any health food stores (WF is 45 min. away) and the Pure and Natural brand is at our grocery store. Thanks!

I’d love to see eco friendly ideas for food, clothing etc that are also frugal… I’d love to buy all organic & eco friendly etc and I know the long term cost saving benefits for self and earth, but I just don’t have the cash in hand to pay for some things.

I second the carpet request. I also get frustrated with the Cosmetic Database and the lack of more product lines available for information.

Curious what your thoughts are on Stevia. I know it is being advertised as a natural alternative to other artificial sweeteners. Is it actually a natural product? I try to keep my family away from anything with artifical sweeteners but didn’t know if I should stay away from Stevia also.

I would love to see more on car-seat safety, specifically on the new recommendations on extended Rear Facing(for as long as possible). Many new and seasoned parents do not know about the importance of this matter. This would be very helpful when car-seat shopping.

I would love to know about the safety of the Safety 1st new line, Nature Next. Apparently, the products are made from recycled plastic and come from plant sources, like corn. Just wondering! They have a baby bathtub I am interested in.

I second the comment about Whole Foods 365 brand shampoos, lotions, shower gels, etc. It seems like a great option for families on a budget who prioritize natural and/or organic products. I love your site, thanks!

I was wondering if you’d review the Method Baby and other Method products commonly sold at Target. Shampoo/Bodywash and Bubble Baths all say they do not contain Phalates or Parabens, etc. It would be great to see your opinion on their products. Thanks!
