The great people from MightyNest.com have a fantastic giveaway for our SafeMama readers this week. If you haven’t noticed, we skipped the Safer Toy Guide this year. Not because we don’t care, but more because we all have new babies at home and well, time is limited. So in lieu we’ve been doing giveaways to help highlight some of the fantastic vendors we support. One of those is MightyNest.com which is a great site for information on living a healthier lifestyle as well as a shop to get safe toys, feeding gear and clothing for your sustainable little ones.
They have so generously offered two amazing items for two of our lucky readers. Here’s what is up for grabs… First prize going home with one lucky winner is…
Mobile Home by Grimm’s Spiel & Holt Design which features toys handmade in Germany out of solid, natural wood using water based dyes. This 14 piece doll home set comes with a felt cover with a string making it easy to carry and take with you! The mobile home is ingenious in that it breaks down into individual pieces that can be mixed with other toys and dolls and then packs up into something so portable. Plus it’s super adorable. I know several little girls that would love this!

Our second winner gets to take home two adorable puzzles also made by Grimm’s Spiel & Holt Design. A Sailboat puzzle and Car puzzle, both made of natural wood and water based dyes. What’s nice about these is that they serve a dual purpose.. puzzle and building blocks. My son has spend countless hours with wood blocks and I have no doubt he’d do the same with these. With two puzzles kids often mix and match them into unique and creative creations. They are also one of those toys you have around forever, that add to a child’s room decor rather than clutter it up with plastic junk.

Wow! Only about 30% of the 17,000 petrochemicals available for use in your home have been tested for safety.
Really scary!
I did not know boric acid in a mattress may be linked to SIDS–yikes!
I’m a member of your Facebook group.
It was great to see they collaborated with Naturepedic to donate mattresses to hospital.

That powders, shampoos and creams are harmful to the reproductive system of my son!

I didn’t know that “PVC is considered by Green Peace to be the most toxic and environmentally damaging plastic”. I’ll keep an extra careful watch on the kinds of toys our son gets for Christmas this year.
OK that’s scary…I didn’t know phthalates in things like bath toys could impair reproduction.
I didn’t realize phthalates were so prevalent in bath toys.

Going to get rid of all our soft bath toys after reading about PVC in the article. All our bath products are organic but I never thought about the toys.
I did not realize that BPA was a hormone disrupter. I just knew it was to be avoided. Great site. Great give away!

This is something I learned from MightyNest –
“You have probably applied more than 126 unique chemicals to your body today, according to the independent scientists at the Environmental Working Group (one of my most trusted non-profit research groups). Most of these have never been tested for safety. “

I did not know that “the vinyl surface of most traditional mattresses is a hard plastic called polyvinyl chloride (PVC), a combination of chlorine and petroleum. To soften the plastic, hormone-disrupting phthalates are added to make the mattress flexible. The phthalates are not currently being removed from crib mattresses because without them they would soften and become unsafe.” Definitely makes you rethink before you buy!
i loved the “better options for baby clothes article” it’s the perfect thing to send to out to friends and family as a primer on why/how to make safer choices

Ughhh! I didn’t realize I needed to worry about dyes in playdo and clays.Looks like I will be buying some Ecodough.
In the Streamline your Cleaning article, they make a good point. My cupboard if full of cleaning supplies…and I don’t need them. I use a steamer on most items and I make my own. I think it’s time to go through my cleaning supplies and get rid of what I don’t need.

I had no idea that children are exposed to an average of 60 chemicals every day from personal care products. I had never realized the number would be that high! This is even scarier when considering that most products on the shelves here contain pthalates, meaning most children are very exposed to such reproductive toxins.

I thought lead was banned from children’s toys made in the U.S.! I guess not…
i learned that mattress manufacturers are under no obligation to tell the public how they construct they’re products.
I didn’t know that I could go to Healthystuff.org, which has the largest database of toxic chemicals in consumer goods, and look up the toxins in things I might purchase. I am definitely using that tool. Thanks Mighty Nest-you are bookmarked!!
I did not know that car seat can have toxic chemicals like lead!
Yikes! The EPA has identified more than 700 pollutants that occur regularly in the water we use in our homes. I have been drinking tap water and give it to my two year old assuming it was safe and not wanting to use bottled water because the plastic bottle is such a waste. I have a brita filter but it if it is not full, drink tap water. Now I will think twice about it.
I read the article “Do You Know What’s in your Baby Mattress?”
One of the materials used to soften the plastic covering is a phthalate. Phthalates are recognized by the Environmental Protection Agency as probable carcinogens and, when ingested, may interfere with, mimic, or block hormones. Extensive studies identify hormone disruption to be most severe on the development of normal body functions. (OMG – that’s horrible!!)

I somehow didn’t realize that disposable water bottles can leach phthalates… in my city, you can’t drink the tap water, and I so wish we could avoid bottled water!
I learned from the PVC article that PVC plastic releases dioxins, a group of the most potent synthetic chemicals ever tested, which can cause cancer and harm the immune and reproductive systems. I actually just bought a PVC-free diaper bag, which makes me like that diaper bag even more:)
I learned that pressed wood furniture gives off chemicals over time so it is best to by second-hand rather than new.

Buy used raincoats so they off gas! Great tip!
I learned that HappyNest.com believes taking off shoes improves air quality inside the house.
read from the “Thriftiest Changes” regarding diapers that the average child will use 6000-8000 disposable diapers. I actually have cloth diapers but I can’t start to use them until I quit work because I simply can’t keep up with the laundry. I look forward to using my BumGenius diapers very soon!
Its safer to use an stainless steel water bottle

While I didn’t learn anything new on Mighty Nest, I thought the site was a great source for brief overviews of so much information that I feel is important to keep up with as parents. Information that can also be overwhelming to many people who may not know some of the hidden dangers around us. I was disappointed that they did not have more products available. There are so many more wonderful products out there–I wish they had more of variety. It would be nice to have a site like this with even more in-depth articles and more products that have been researched and tested. Love LuSa Organics!
wow, so glad to know that cast iron is great to cook in and our anodized aluminum is okay too. will throw away the non-stick pan we have – especially since it is starting to chip!
I learnt that each day more than 60 million plastic water bottles are thrown away in the USA.
I learned that the 3 things to watch out for in children’s toys are pthalates, BPA, and lead.
BPA, pthalates, and melamine are all things to avoid in plastics.
I learned that cleaning products are among the most hazardous products found in the home.
I learned that all you need for cleaners is baking soda, borax, white vinegar, hydrogen peroxide-based cleaners, and lemons.
i found out that PVC is considered by Green Peace to be the most toxic and environmentally damaging plastic thanks eaglesforjack@gmail.com
I am a fan on facebook thanks for the chance my id is lepaige
I learned that pajamas might leach toxins into children’s skin! That should definately be illegal.
Great – another reason to avoid PVC – there’s often lead and other toxic metals found in it too! Glad I already started avoiding it!
