Review: Earth’s Best Baby Formula

cat_formulaWhile we all know that breast is best, there are just times when you can’t breastfeed.  My son was strictly formula fed.   I really wanted it to work out with my daughter, but she is just not a good nurser.  She loves the comfort of it, and I do what I can, but there was a lot of problems in the beginning, that just never helped her learn properly.  So while she gets what she’s willing to take, she does still get formula supplementation and this time around, I felt that if I had to give my baby formula, I wanted to go the organic route.

There are a few organic formulas on the market.   I chose Earth’s Best because it’s comparable to conventional.    I want to say that it makes me feel better knowing that it’s FDA certified, but my feelings about the FDA aren’t exactly warm and fuzzy.    It meets the needs of what I need it to do, and eases the guilt by a fraction knowing that I’m not giving her added pesticides or growth hormones.

The price is pretty steep.  I order it from Amazon through their subscription service to save a little bit of cash, but overall, if you’re needing to formula feed and want to choose organic, you’re going to pay for it.   They say it’s easily digestible and I don’t know if that’s true.  My daughter “goes”, but I prefer the breastmilk variety poop (yes, I just said poop) over the formula variety.  It smells like DHA and, and she doesn’t exactly look comfortable when she does go.   The taste (and yes, I did taste it), to me is pretty disgusting, again, I can taste the DHA in it, which I don’t really find appealing, especially knowing that breastmilk does not taste the same, but my daughter doesn’t seem to have a problem with it.   I noticed that she does take her time eating it, unlike her need to inhale a pumped bottle.  Go figure.

Overall, it’s not a bad formula.  It comparable nutritionally to the big brands out there, and is a nice option for those that don’t have a choice in the matter, but want to feed their baby organic formula.   The other plus is that there’s no sucrose in it, like there is with other brands.  The con is that it’s expensive.   A 25.5 ounce can runs about $29, so if you’re full time formula feeding, you’ll be blowing through these in a matter of days.

Get it: You can order Earths Best organic formula through Amazon.com.  Sign up for their monthly subscription service and save %15 (about 23.99 a can), and if you’re a member of amazon prime (completely worth it if you’re planning on signing up for the subscription service), you get free two day shipping.

Earth’s Best is frequently part of Amazon’s Friday Sale. When you combine the lower price with the Subscribe and Save option it’s a great deal–usually $21-ish a can, shipped.

    Enjoyed the review!

have you tried baby’s only organic (http://www.naturesone.com/index.php)? i get it through diapers.com–i buy a case to cut the cost, but it is expensive (it has been on sale forever on diapers.com).

i was really impressed with all the info on their website–that combats the expense for me.

we had feeding issues and this is the only formula she kept down.

Wow, that is a little steep but worth it in my opinion. This is coming from a mom who was not a big “producer” of milk. At the time too (3+years ago) there was not much out there in the way of organic formula so I went with whatever didn’t make my daughter spit up too much. Now I know to do more in depth research if/when there is a 2nd time around.

PLEASE check out the Cornucopia Institute’s extremely detailed report on DHA/ARA in formula, published January 2008 (you should be able to Google this). You will see that even certified-organic formula is not organic based on the chemically extracted DHA/ARA that is lab-produced. Some scary stuff. I have only found one formula in Target that does not have this chemical DHA/ARA supplement – that’s the one I’ll be giving my daughter (I’m currently breastfeeding, but she’s 7 months old and starting to eat more than I can produce).

I know it takes more time, but there are good recipes for making your own formula, from both cow and goat milk available on line http://www.westonaprice.org/children/recipes.html has some, but I’m sure there are more out there.

    Thanks for the reviews. :)

Like the previous poster had mentioned DHA/ARA added to scary stuff.

I used Earth’s Best for my babies until I learned more about the added DHA/ARA and how it is made. The company is Martek and it uses a highly explosive chemical – hexane – to extract the DHA from algae and fungi. In 2003 there was a huge explosion at a wastewater treatment plant in Kentucky. The cause was the amount of hexane gas released from Martek’s process that resulted in elevated levels of n-hexane in the sewer system.

There are only a couple of organic formulas I’ve found that does not contain the lab made DHA. NaturesOne Baby’s Only and Genesis milk.

    @Jen and Lorelei,

We actually posted an article about the hexane derived DHA. I agree it is scary stuff. However, with BPA in formula cans, and perchlorate and melamine and probably just about every other bad thing that is linked to formula these days, you have to pick your poison here, so to speak. There seems to be something wrong with just about every formula. We actually looked into the Nature’s Only, but because it’s marketed as a toddler formula (which is both a. because they insist on breastmilk being best, and b. because it’s not FDA certified), I was a little leary about putting my infant on it. That said, if it’s working for someone, then they should stick with what works. Earth’s Best isn’t exactly my favorite, but then again, neither is having to buy formula at all. :o )

Also, the problem I had with Nature’s Only is they use Rice sugar as the sweetener in the formula. I don’t care how you hype it, it makes more since to use lactose as the sweetener. Earth’s Best uses lactose, which could explain the extra cost in relation to the less expensive organic choices.
