bumbalm1I’ve been lucky that my son doesn’t really get diaper rash often (and let’s hope his new baby sister follows suit on that) but when he does, anything with zinc in it tends to irritate his skin more.   We also cloth diaper, and while I do use disposables on occasion, I need something that I can use while using cloth, so that I don’t have to use even more disposables.    So when I got the opportunity to try Dimpleskins Bum Bum Balm, I jumped at the chance.   Bum Bum Balm is completely all natural, zinc free and also safe for those who cloth diaper.  Score!   This is not your typical diaper rash cream.   As I’ve stated, it’s zinc free, so you don’t have that typical white smelly paste that you have with regular diaper rash creams.  Zinc can leave an almost waterproof residue on cloth diapers when they get washed, ruining their absorbency so this is a great alternative for those who are cloth diapering.   Since this is a balm, it goes on nice and light and doesn’t seem to coat the skin where it can’t breathe, yet the beeswax acts as a barrier to keep moisture away from rashes.

Bum Bum Balm’s ingredients are completely all natural.   With less than ten ingredients, all of which I know and can pronounce, I feel good knowing that I’m not putting any unnecessary chemicals on my children. Check out the DimpleSkins Naturals website – they have some great products!   Bum Bum Balm gets a hearty thumbs up from SafeMama.com!

I use Burt’s Bees but I really do not like how strong of an odor it has so I would love to try something else plus I cloth diaper so this would be wonderful!

  2. Renee on May 29th, 2009 1:10 pm

We currently use Boudreaux’s Butt Paste, when we absolutely have to use a diaper rash cream..it does the job, but I find the smell to be a little much for my baby girl (reminds us of church!)

  3. Jaime on May 29th, 2009 1:25 pm

I currently use Triple Paste when my daughter gets rashes. It seems to work pretty well, it takes away the redness by the next day.

  4. Elena Gomez on May 29th, 2009 1:35 pm

Thankfully my son does not get rashes often, but when he does we use old-fashioned “un”petroleum jelly and cornstarch. I recently purchased some angel baby balm, but have not tried it yet. I’m always happy to find another good product that we can use and that will keep him comfortable and rash-free.

  5. Ana on May 29th, 2009 2:13 pm

My son rarely gets diaper rashes. But I use California Baby Caliming DiaperRaash Cream at night to protect him from the heavy wet diaper. I love it because it has organic and natural ingredients. However, I am considering to switch to cloth (I use Nature Babycare) and I know you are not supposed to use diaper creams and it would be good to have something that you can use with them.

  6. Joann on May 29th, 2009 3:07 pm

We use California Baby, although in his 2 months of life so far my little one has yet to get a diaper rash! We also cloth diaper, I’m wondering if that’s why or if they are more prevalent in older babies. I can imagine they are more common in hot, humid weather which describes our summers to a T, so I definitely want to have a great product on hand.

I am currently using Burt’s Bees and I like it well enough. It works well for my little girl, but she doesn’t get diaper rash that often. I am always looking for an alternative though, as I’m not that big of a fan of Brut’s Bees as a company anymore.

  9. Sue on May 29th, 2009 3:52 pm

You name it, I’ve tried it. My daughter gets horrible diaper rashes. I’d say the best OTC stuff is Triple Paste. Butt Paste, Desitin, A&D, Aquaphor,Lotrimin AF and plain old corn starch just haven’t helped.

I’ll have to check out this stuff. I do like that it’s all natural. Since she gets chronic rashes we have to use something just about every diaper change as a preventative.

  10. Jennifer on May 29th, 2009 4:05 pm

My poor 17 month old son suffers from terrible diaper rash and so far, I have not found a remedy. I actually have to dress him in onesies all the time so that he can’t reach into his diaper area, otherwise, he gets in and leaves behind scratch marks from his nails on his little tushy! I’m sure by now I have tried everything… I’ve tried cloth diapering and cholorine free disposables, and I have a arsenal of natural and mainstream diaper rash products in my house, but even his doctor ran out of different product samples for us. I even resorted to trying him on the potty in the hopes he was ready to give up the diapers. Gavin’s hiney needs Bum Bum Balm’s help!

  11. Lisa Kincart on May 29th, 2009 4:06 pm

I use Butt Paste but am looking for a more natural alternative.

  12. Christie on May 29th, 2009 4:53 pm

My daughter doesn’t get diaper rash very often, but when she does I use Earth Mama Angel Baby Bottom Balm. I really like and I cloth diaper so it is perfect for that. I would love to try the Bum Bum Balm, I always am looking for new natural/organic products.

  13. Jennifer on May 29th, 2009 5:10 pm

We have been using Weleda and California Baby diaper creams, but we recently got turned onto Baby Carrot bum balm which is zinc-free and very nice. We cloth diaper and I did ruin a bunch of diapers before I knew about the zinc issue, so I’d like to transition completely to zinc-free!

  14. Jessica on May 29th, 2009 5:20 pm

My son gets irritated very easily. I just recently switched to the California Baby diaper cream, it is working ok, but he still gets a rash very easily. I’m always up for trying something new. This sounds great. I’d love to try it.

  15. Elaine on May 29th, 2009 6:58 pm

We use Little Twig Diaper Cream. I love it because it doesn’t smell.

  16. Ephi on May 29th, 2009 7:54 pm

I use northern essence All Natural Diaper Rash Salve. I don’t use it often but seem to work out when I have to. Since I cloth diaper 100% I don’t have many choices out there. I would love to try out the Bum Bum Balm. I read great reviews on it, yours included! =)

  17. Jen on May 29th, 2009 8:21 pm

My son doesn’t get rashes but if I notice a little bit of irritation I just use shea butter which seem work wonders.

  18. Danni on May 29th, 2009 10:27 pm

I haven’t had a bum to rash protect in more than 6 years, but with a new baby on the way, I’ll admit I’m feeling lost at figuring out just what I should be using to protect his health and tushie! I always used balmex for my older kiddos, but I’m going to try to stick with the most gentle products I can find for this new little guy!

  19. Koko's Mama on May 30th, 2009 12:10 am

We use LuSa’s booty balm and so far, I love it, but I’ve been wondering how Dimpleskins compares…

  20. Rebekah on May 30th, 2009 1:53 am

Right now the only thing I can use on my boy is un-petroleum jelly. He is also sensitive to the zinc and it makes his (luckily infrequent) rashes much worse.

  21. paola on May 30th, 2009 2:00 am

Boudreaux’s Butt Paste – I use it at nights only. Baby has not had a diaper rash ever but I hate the brown color because it stains my diaper changing pads

  22. Christie on May 30th, 2009 2:13 am

I added a button to my blog!

  23. Amanda Berkes on May 30th, 2009 2:59 am

I have never used diaper rash cream…just ordered this stuff tho!!!

  24. Jacqueline on May 30th, 2009 3:24 am

I’ve been using water with a bit of tea tree, but it’s not cutting it and I’ve given up (after years of cloth diapering!). Maybe this is the answer…thanks for the review and the giveaway!

  25. deliarose on May 30th, 2009 4:03 am

I am currently using Common Sense baby cream, but I do use cloth and would like something that isn’t so thick with all the zinc.

  26. emspahn on May 30th, 2009 4:41 am

I am using California Baby based on SafeMama’s recommendation…but I am always looking for more! (In fact, I was the one…if anybody saw…the person who requested a Diaper Cream list!)

  27. emspahn on May 30th, 2009 4:42 am

and I follow you on Twitter (justemspahn)…

  28. emspahn on May 30th, 2009 4:43 am

and I posted a blinkie on my blog. :)

  29. Anne on May 30th, 2009 3:26 pm

I currently use, only when absolutely necessary, Earth’s Best diaper ointment. Love that it’s natural and it only takes 1 night of use and my baby is rash free! I do cloth diaper…as they get a little older, and never knew of the zinc issue. I’d love to try this new balm out!!! Yay1
    Thanks,
    Anne

  30. Sandi on May 30th, 2009 5:24 pm

I used Desitin, Nature’s Baby Organics, and Method. I love the way Nature’s Baby Organics smells but I find it doesn’t help the really bad rashes that my daughter sometimes gets and I have to use chemical laden Desitin to heal it up.

  31. Victoria on May 31st, 2009 1:16 am

I use Rite Aid Zinc Oxide Ointment since it has a rating of only 1 on EWG’s Cosmetic Safety Database. My son did not have diaper rash until he started to eat a larger variety of solids at 6 months. He has sensitive skin and eczema. I would like to try a diaper rash cream that is more natural and does not contain zinc.

  32. Mandy on May 31st, 2009 8:50 pm

We are using burts bees right now-mostly because I stocked up on it when I found it for a great price. I do like the way it smells though. Makes diaper changes a little more pleasant.

  33. Frema on June 1st, 2009 1:31 pm

We use Burt’s Bees and Earth’s Best diaper creams and like both. We’ve tried California Baby but thought it was too “runny.” We only recently have started paying more attention to ingredients in our personal care items (thanks to Safe Mama!), so I would love to try this!

  34. Frema on June 1st, 2009 1:56 pm

P.S. I just retweeted this on Twitter for the bonus entry!

  35. Jessi on June 1st, 2009 4:47 pm

Awesome! My daughter has an allergy to so many fruits: strawberries, oranges, tomatoes, and watermelon… when she eats them she gets this wicked diaper rash. We avoid them at all cost but her bottom still breaks out rather easily. We are always on the look out for the best bum paste/cream/salve that will protect and prevent.

    Thanks,
    Jessi

  36. Val on June 1st, 2009 7:11 pm

I use California Baby and I love it because I know it won’t irritate my daughter’s cute little bum.

  37. Bonnie on June 2nd, 2009 11:00 pm

We use vaseline but she still gets a few rashes once in a while :(

I’ll be interested in trying this out :)

  38. erin on June 2nd, 2009 11:51 pm

We’re big fans of Earth Mama Angel Baby’s Bottom Balm in our family. We can’t use the zinc based formulas as they make our baby’s skin peel. We had started out with another natural diaper cream that worked great until our baby started sleeping through the night. Then it was diaper rash city. It looked awful so I used the zinc for several days until I could get some EMAB Bottom Balm shipped out to us. That stuff works great. Not only did the peeling go away overnight but the diaper rash went away completely after two days and it hasn’t returned.
However, it is a bit more expensive than most so I would love to find a natural diaper cream that is a bit less expensive that still works.

Plus Bum Bum Balm is listed as less toxic on EWG’s website so I’d love to try some.

  39. Marian on June 3rd, 2009 1:07 am

When my son has bad diaper rash, we use Triple Paste. But we also noticed what worked best was rinsing his bottom out in the bathtub after each change, and letting him air dry.

  40. Laura M on June 3rd, 2009 1:49 pm

I started out with Method diaper creme for my daughter. It worked great for her, and the thinner texture was much easier to work with than the thick, Desitin-esque ones. After reading about some of the questionably safe ingredients in Method on Safe Mama.com, I tried Nature’s Baby Organics… love it! No strong scent, easier to smear, and travels great.

  41. Barbara Friant on June 3rd, 2009 2:08 pm

We use Balmex. Although it’s thick and I am sure full of junk, it does work with her diaper rash and doesn’t break her out.

I retweeted on Twitter & follow safemama

  43. heather b. on June 3rd, 2009 4:14 pm

our baby is due next week. i don’t actually have a cream i use yet, but have been looking at natural products to start with.

  44. Amy on June 4th, 2009 1:14 am

Recently, my sister-in-law referred me to your website and I am so thankful she did. I have been using Desitin on my nine month old son and I can’t stand the smell from the zinc. I am thinking I might switch to this product.

  45. Jen on June 4th, 2009 7:06 pm

I’ve been looking for a new cream without zinc which is hard to find. I have used California Baby but it stings, Boudreax Butte paste doesn’t work that well, Hyland with calendula is not bad.

  46. Tracy on June 5th, 2009 12:35 am

We have completely stopped using any diaper rash creams and only use Vitamin A & D ointment. We have to only put it on every other time and still end up bathing him and letting him run ‘free.’ He’s too sensitive for the rest!

  47. Deb on June 5th, 2009 12:50 am

I’m using Burt’s Bees right now, but I hate how my little girl seems like it for so long after I put it on. Her diaper rash isn’t bad, but she always seems to have a bit and the Burts Bees isn’t making it go away :(

  48. Jennifer Hamitlon on June 5th, 2009 1:48 am

Right now we use Desitin, but we are about to change to cloth diapering and need something that is compatable with cloth. Thanks for the giveaway!

  49. Jennifer Hamitlon on June 5th, 2009 1:51 am

we use Boudreaux’s Butt Paste however sometimes it does not get the job done and has a not so great smell thanks for the giveaway thanks again tina

  51. xenia on June 5th, 2009 6:03 pm

We have always used A & D and we make sure to lather it on when either daughter is starting to get a rash. I guess we haven’t had any major complaints about it, but I’m sure there’s a better product out there… Like this one! Thanks!
