Earth Day: No More Plastic! Klean Kanteen Mom & Me Set Giveaway

Happy Earth Day! I thought bringing to attention today the vast amount of unnecessary plastic we use on a daily basis was a good way to start Earth Day.  That  wasted plastic could be eliminated from your daily life with one small item.  A reusable water bottle.  I know I know you’ve heard it all 1,000 times but really – in the grand scheme, it’s one small thing you can do to help our environment while drinking out of something that won’t leech chemicals into your water. From Earth911.com:

  • Americans buy an estimated 28 billion plastic water bottles every year.
  • Nearly 8 out of every 10 bottles will end up in a landfill.
  • In 2006, it took more than 17 million barrels of oil (excluding the oil used in transporting the plastic) to produce plastic bottles.
  • The manufacturing process of creating bottled water created more than 2.5 million tons of carbon dioxide.
  • Only 13 percent of water bottles are recycled.

klean kanteenReusing your water bottle can really make a huge difference.  Besides, think of the money you’ll save!  Everyone keeps saying “In this economy…” and those people probably go out and buy flats of bottled water.  Buying ONE reusable bottle can save you hundreds of dollars a year while saving the environment from unnecessary plastic and damaging resources.

That means the kids too! Now that we’re past “sippy cup” stage (well at least for my first one) we’re into the kids size Klean Kanteen for our daily water use. Klean Kanteen is made of stainless steel and comes with various fitting tops including a sippy spout (which is actually an Avent sippy spout which you can buy replacements for, all made of BPA/PVC/Phthalate Free plastic).  It fits in most cup holders, doesn’t leak and looks pretty stylish.  You can also use a sports top with it for older kids who are over the sippy spout.

After reading the H2O facts on the website, I have decided to shorten my showers and time myself so that I don’t use an excess of wahter. I have decided to do this knowing that most of the world does not have clean water. Even if I have clean water, it doesn’t mean I need to use it more than I should.

  2. Courtney K. on April 22nd, 2009 4:55 pm

I added the SafeMama button to my blog. Yay! :) Check it out…

I plan to stop using paper towels and start using rags for clean ups. I have already started using old washcloths for cleaning the kitchen. I also recently switched from disposable diapers to cloth and love not having all the diapers piling up in the garbage can and the landfills!

  4. Jessica on April 22nd, 2009 5:02 pm

Love the water bottles! My husband bought me one a while back but he got aluminum not stainless steel so I’ve been meaning to go out and get myself a new one.

One little thing we’re doing this spring to go green is planting a small vegetable and herb garden outside. I’m looking forward to some fresh picked veggies.

  5. Barbara on April 22nd, 2009 5:17 pm

I am using up my last roll of paper towels, and by the end of the week will be switched to cloth rags for clean-ups! Also, I am switching my son from disposable overnight diapers to cloth overnight. They sound like baby steps, but they’re big changes in our house!

  6. melissa on April 22nd, 2009 5:26 pm

I’d love these water bottles! One thing we are doing is trying to use less water (shutting off the water while brushing our teeth, low flow shower heads with shorter showers, etc)

  7. Laura on April 22nd, 2009 5:26 pm

I was actually planning to get a reusable water bottle from either Klean kanteen or Sigg. So I would obviously love to win this giveaway. Having a nice reusable water bottle would clearly be good for the earth b/c it reduces waste.

  8. Cheryl Murphy on April 22nd, 2009 6:01 pm

I am going to buy reusable water bottles for everyone in the family!

  9. Ana on April 22nd, 2009 6:19 pm

I started printing documents at work using both sides of pages. Also, virtual proofing (PDF). At home, I’m gonna start using vinegar for cleaning purposes.
Also, I started bringing a glass from home to work so I can refill it with tap water during the day!!

  10. Andrea on April 22nd, 2009 6:35 pm

I’ve been using cloth diapers since my daughter was 1 month old and have just purchased the Better Life Starter Kit.

For the first time our family will be sharing a garden space to grow much of our own produce this summer. While we’ve always joined our local CSA group we never did the work ourselves. For the balance of our produce needs we’ll be visiting farmers markets, picking our own at farms and buying local through our member-owned food coop.

  13. Hudson's Mom on April 22nd, 2009 6:44 pm

Last year we switched to reusable grocery bags for our “earth day resolution”. This year we are going to focus on recycling (our bin has been ordered from the City) and try to ONLY pack no-waste lunches!

We love the Klean Kanteens – the whole family loves them, especially my 2 year old! He ONLY wants to use his Klean Kanteen so we could certainly use a couple more!!

I’m finally starting to use the fabric reuseable shopping bags instead of plastic bags for grocery shopping. I’ve also brought in a mug and a bowl for my coffee and lunches at work, so no more waste!

I am going through my cleaning products today and replacing them with green alternatives, either homemade or commercial products.

  18. Heather on April 22nd, 2009 7:05 pm

We have started recycling all the our household containers. We have also tried to purchase more environmentally friendly products in general.

The Klean Kanteens and really cool!!! I know my daughters and husband would love them!

  19. Lisa Kincart on April 22nd, 2009 7:15 pm

This spring we have planted an organic garden. We are looking forward to having fresh veggies to eat. We also recycle every bit of plastic, paper, and glass that we can!

  20. Pepper on April 22nd, 2009 7:36 pm

Living in Alaska, we are very conscious of how our actions directly affect our environment.

Our family has used reusable water bottles for a long time, but since the BPA issue has come up I’ve been slowly but surely changing out our old plastic bottles, and would LOVE some Klean Kanteen bottles. I’ve recommended them to multiple people.

We’ve also begun showering every other day, and timing them. We don’t turn on any lights until the evening, and are only running the dishwasher and doing laundry once a week, making sure we have full loads before starting. I’m also going to stop using paper-towels, and move to rags.

We also live out of town, and only run into town once or twice a week, other than my husband going to work, and make sure we run all our errands when we go.

We are trying very hard to be conscious of our environment…we want it to be as pristine for our son as is has been for us.

  21. marine corps nomads on April 22nd, 2009 7:36 pm

We’ve been working on making various changes over the past year. Some of the changes we’ve made are using reusable bags and water bottles, using safe cleaning products, using safe hair & body items. We’re still working on switching from paper towels to cloth rags.

  22. Pepper on April 22nd, 2009 7:38 pm

I have your button on my blog! I love your website, and come here to check out “stuff” before I purchase anything for my baby. Some of my friends think I’m a psycho first time mom, but they’re wrong. I’ve started going to your safemama website for myself as well. Keep up the GREAT work!!

  23. Jill on April 22nd, 2009 8:20 pm

We’re joining a CSA this summer. We’ll be supporting a local farmer and I know how far the food will be traveling to my house so I don’t need to worry about the environmental impact that it would have being shipped across the country.

  24. Kelly on April 22nd, 2009 8:28 pm

Love Kleen Kanteens! We have only one adult-sized one so far but would love to add to our collection. Sure beats wasting plastic!

The two things we’ve done more recently to help save the Earth are switch to low-flow showerheads and switch out all our bulbs to CFL bulbs. Every little bit helps!

  25. Julie on April 22nd, 2009 8:35 pm

We reuse paper that has just been printed on one side by giving it to our daughter for her drawings. We recycle a lot of our empty jars as containers for other things. I am using cloth diapers and am switching to cloth rags (as opposed to paper towels).

I would love to win this giveaway!

  26. Alisa on April 22nd, 2009 8:49 pm

We’ve installed water filter on our faucet so that we don’t have to keep buying drinking water. We also make a point to shut off water whenever we’re not actively using it (in the shower, while brushing teeth, etc), and are using cloth diapers for our son. We try to recycle as MUCH as possible (how great would it be if EVERTHING was recyclable?!).

  27. Jillian R on April 22nd, 2009 8:53 pm

Right now, I already use cloth bags for grocery shopping, rags for cleaning and instead of paper towels, cloth wipes for my daughter, and I make my own cleaning products out of baking soda, castile soap, vinegar, hydrogen peroxide and essential oils. I plan on getting a shower filter and shortening the length of my showers.

I’ve decided to switch from baby wipes to cloth wipes. I know it sounds like a small change, but we go through WAY TOO MANY wipes in our house, so it will make a difference in our waste production.

  30. jessica on April 22nd, 2009 10:43 pm

in my house im all about going green! i have my own reusable shopping bags, i cloth diaper my boy, i try to buy organic as much as possible because its better for the earth and our bodies… i also do all my cleaning with baking soda and vinegar or a wham made safe cleaner! i recycle and i am trying to get rid of all disposable needs in the kitchen like take and toss tubs, water/juice bottles, saran, wax paper, zip top bags….. oh the list goes on!

  31. Audrey on April 22nd, 2009 11:29 pm

We have been buying more organic products. I use cloth diapers and we use cloth for our tissues and I’m getting more cloth to make more rags for the kitchen to eliminate paper towel use.

  32. Bitsy on April 23rd, 2009 1:15 am

I am going to try to arrange errands so that we do them all in one day… instead of driving into town 3 or 4 times per week! It will help save fuel and reduce the amount of pollution we produce.

  33. Bitsy on April 23rd, 2009 1:17 am
  34. Jennifer H. on April 23rd, 2009 1:18 am

We already use reusable shopping bags and we never buy bottled water. Next on my list is to stop using paper towels and plastic in the kitchen – no saran wrap, sandwich baggies or plastic storage containers. I watched Oprah today and holy cow! I knew there was trash in the ocean, but trash swirls bigger than Texas and 90 ft. deep? Yikes.

Cloth diapers are awesome -we’ve used them for a year now.

  40. Cate on April 23rd, 2009 12:35 pm

I use the reusable shopping bags (and am even training my nearby grocery store to “get over it”), but I’m going to make my own PRODUCE bags. Although I reuse my produce bags until they’re an embarrassment, I’m making them out of old onion bags.
The funniest thing? My 3yo son just asked the guy in the produce dept yesterday for the gigantic onion bag he was emptying for display. Totally random, because he had no idea about my crafty plans. I’ll use that to make a few.

  41. Cate on April 23rd, 2009 12:40 pm

    I just tweeted it.

We are working on a low impact baby: cloth diapers, used clothes, breastfeeding and on using more organic produce.

  43. Cate on April 23rd, 2009 1:07 pm

I just ordered one kleen kanteen. (I have 2 sons and my baby boy just started borrowing his big brother’s) I could forward the confirmation to your e-mail, if that would suffice.

**But everyone should know, when you go to check out, they have you e-mail them for a discount code and e-mail you back immediately with it. 8% off, if that helps for something you were planning to buy anyhow!

  44. Tracey on April 23rd, 2009 1:36 pm

Just bought myself a water bottle for my birthday and I love it! We are using eco-friendly cleaning products in our home now too.

  45. Bezen on April 23rd, 2009 1:56 pm

I use reusable grocery bags for a few months now.

  46. Nancy on April 23rd, 2009 2:09 pm

We bought Kleen Kanteens last summer for the kids. Loved ‘em, then lost ‘em :-(
Around the house, I’m trying to think of creative ways to reuse gray water. I’m watering house plants with dehumidifier water and water left over from the kids sippy cups. Also, adding old dishwater and tub water to a large jug for eventually taking outside for yard plants. Amazing how much water you can save this way and still have green house plants and beautiful blosoms!

  47. Bridget on April 23rd, 2009 2:12 pm

We have a Sigg bottle for everyone in the family; we are using cloth diapers & wipes for the new baby in June; I would love to get a rain barrel from Water Check to use on our organic gardens and install low-flow shower heads (I wash my hair once a week and use much less water); we use organic cleaning products and buy organic foods (from the local farmer’s market); dry clothes on the line instead of the dryer when possible.

  48. Margaret on April 23rd, 2009 2:23 pm

Every time I run out of a conventional product I replace it with a green version. At this point most of my cleaning supplies and body products are green.

  49. Tracy on April 23rd, 2009 2:32 pm

I am making a REAL EFFORT to remember to use all the re-useable bags I have for the grocery store!!! I used to always forget!!! I have also started re-using all sorts of things around the house-like making new uses for things I would normally throw away like milk and OJ jugs…I’ve just recently started using vinegar and water as my only type of cleaning product…thanks for the giveaway!!!

  50. deliarose on April 23rd, 2009 2:40 pm

I have recently started to cut the amount of my laundry by having my children re-wear their clothes if they are not really dirty. This has saved on my time and I have found that it changes our perspective a bit too. (We are reading Little House in the Big Woods and are thinking about a number of things.) There are other green things that we do, but this one was our most recent change.

  51. casandra on April 23rd, 2009 3:59 pm

last year, our family’s earth day resolution was to rid our home of disposable products…such as diapers + wipes, paper towels + napkins, paper/plastic plates + cups, sponges, dryer sheets, plastic baggies, throw away containers, and cleaning wipes.
the only disposable product we still use is toilet paper, and we always buy recycled.

this year, our earth day resolution is more focused on the outdoors. we plan to start our own garden and compost, as well as set up three rain barrels and use native plants to finish our landscaping.

  52. Jennifer on April 23rd, 2009 4:23 pm

We use reusable grocery bags and safe plastic instead of plastic baggies. We clean with only vinegar and baking soda. I take shorter showers and we have a tankless water heater. This third pregnancy I’ve not bought anything new – for the baby or myself. Girls can wear blue too =) All we’ll need are diapers b/c the baby can use everything his/her older brothers already have. We decline plastic utensils and napkins when getting food to go and always bring our own. I also bring my own crayons to the restaurants or take the set home b/c they just toss them if you don’t. I re-use paper towel rolls for art projects. We have all CFL bulbs throughout the house and our lights are on timers.
I have a Klean Kanteen that’s beat up and peeling but I love it! My husband and the kids don’t yet. I’m curious if the Nalgene Hydration packs would work for my hiker hubby….a great idea!
    Happy Earth Day everyone!
Wow – I’m proud to say we do a lot!

  53. Angela Heffner on April 23rd, 2009 4:29 pm

I started building my raised garden bed this afternoon with my 14 month old son playing in the dirt alongside me. I plan to grow organic veggies this year… it will be fun!

  54. Melanie Chelpka on April 23rd, 2009 5:13 pm

I’ve recently switched to seventh generation brand cleaning products to help the environment and i use my husband’s old t-shirts to make cleaning rags.

  55. Danielle L on April 23rd, 2009 6:15 pm

My husband and I switched to stainless steel water bottles and I would love to have one of the sippy cups for my toddler as well as spare bottles for us. We have switched to reusable grocery bags, organic food, glass food containers, non-toxic personal care products etc. My main concern right now is switching over to non-toxic cleaning products and eliminating paper use in the home.

  56. Lisa on April 23rd, 2009 6:42 pm

We just joined a CSA in our community and look forward to all the fresh local produce this summer!

  57. Sarah on April 23rd, 2009 6:53 pm

I am going to keep a stash of my own food containers in my car for leftovers on the rare occasion we go out to eat! I also want to try Luna Pads. In the last two years, we’ve switched to cloth diapers, cloth wipes, Skoy cloths for clean ups in stead of paper towels, stainless water bottles & sippy cups, cloth napkins, all natural cleaning products, CFLs, buying mostly used clothing for the kids and myself, toting our own coffee mugs, reusable grocery bags, waxed paper bags instead of baggies, and replaced our dying washer with a HE one. Small steps make a big difference in our world, but aren’t that big a deal for me once I change my habits! :)

  58. Cathy on April 23rd, 2009 6:56 pm

we’ll make sure our dishwashing machine is completely full before running it. hopefully this means we’ll run it no more than once a week!

Very informative website…even ordered a well water testing kit.

We stopped buying bottled water over two years ago and bought a pitcher filter. Saved so much money and helps the environment.

Recycling toilet paper/paper towel rolls when paper is gone and adding a milk jug to our toilet tanks to conserve water when flushing.

  65. Kari on April 24th, 2009 11:23 am

We have decided to hang a clothes line for line drying instead of using our dryer. We also will be purchasing some Kleen Kanteen drink containers instead of those nasty bottled water containers. And we are shortening our showers and our trips in the car. We want to leave a smaller footprint.

  66. Elena Gomez on April 24th, 2009 5:21 pm

My husband loves his LL Bean stainless steel bottle (made by Klean Kanteen) and my 1 1/2 year old always likes to play with it, so I am sure he would LOVE his own version of daddy’s and I would like one of my own. We just planted tomatoes in our garden and are being more vigilant of turning off lights to save energy!

  67. Katie on April 25th, 2009 12:45 am

I have been making my own cleaning products and love it! No more worries over nasty chemicals in my house. I have one reusable bottle and use it almost everyday. I’d love to have an extra! My daughter always has a sippy full of water. While hers are all BPA free, we don’t yet have a stainless cup! Thanks for the opportunity to win!

  68. Kelly on April 25th, 2009 3:36 am

I am trying very hard to minimize our paper towel use. I can’t commit to using NONE, since it’s such an ingrained habit that I can’t drop them cold turkey ;-) , but I’m aiming for minimal use right now. Baby steps!

Oh, and I’m going to ask my husband about rain barrels to water the garden (in which we’re growing veggies, so hopefully that’s a small contribution to the environment)… we haven’t done it yet but it seems like a good idea.

Planted some fruit trees, hooked up a drip system to water them. I don’t really have a green thumb but I’m hoping to get some apples, peaches and apricots while also adding more green to my yard! Hope it works!

  76. Ephi on April 26th, 2009 4:27 pm

we’ve made a number of changes in our life:
un-paper: we’ve replaced paper towels and napkins for cloth ones.
cloth diapers: no more disposables! We love not having to contribute to the landfill and only have cloth against our child’s skin. I dry them out in the sun occasionally.
switch to organic: we’ve made a pledge to buy organic this applies to food, our soaps/lotions/shampoos and clothing when available.
compost: we’ve planted an edible garden, compost all our food scraps and updated our irrigation system to drip.
Drinking filtered tap water in reusable bottles.
BYOB: we bring our own bags to stores and groceries

The list goes on, we carpool, consume less by buying only what’s needed, take shorter showers, changed to HE washer/dryer, energy star appliances and cfls. We are planning to install solar panels maybe next year. That would be great if we can!

But the biggest contribution we hope can help the earth is to educate people around us and raise our children to respect the environment. We love safemama!

I would love to have this bottle set!!! For earth day we have decided to dtart using reusable shopping bags exclusively. I am always amazed at the huge bag of plastic bags I collect and return to the recycle center at the stores.

We are using the cloth bags for groceries and other shopping as well as using the refillable bottles for water everyday at work!

I used to fill a bag of trash a day, now my household recycles everything we can, we use a bag a week. I started doing my wash in cold/cold, with Crunchy Clean. My laundry room has never smelled so good! I also purchased Better Life cleaners, they work great and I don’t have to worry about my daughter playing on the floor washed w/ chemicals. I also only use LuLu’s and Little Twig on my daughter. Living the (chemical free, eco friendly) Life!

I will be saving up to buy a rain barrel so that I can plant a garden and not feel guilty about using so much water to keep it going.

I’ll be stocking up on more organic cloth baby wipes and using them more than disposable ones. I also switched to biodegradable wipes.
