cababyI’ve long wanted to sing the praises of California Baby® products. I’ve tested a number of other lines and I keep going back to my “old faithful”, California Baby. I wanted to start my series of reviews of phthalate-free and paraben-free products with this line since I’ve used a number of their products extensively, and when I saw another article about phthalates in baby shampoo in the Palm Beach Post last weekend, I felt I should get the ball rolling. What better place to start then with the line I’ve used since the day my son was born.

California Baby provides baby/kid bath products as well as sun protection, diaper care, bug protection…. all eco-friendly, cruelty-free, paraben-free and phthalate free. And they work. They have expanded their line to include freshening spritzers, essential oils and mother care too.

I have most of the baby bath and diaper line in my house at all times. The Calming Shampoo & Body Wash I use every time we bathe. It lathers well, has a light lavender scent (also comes in Unscented for the sensitive ones, Tea Tree & Lavender and Swimmers Defense) and rinses clean. It works great as both a shampoo and body wash. For fun we also use their Bubble Baths which, for everyday use I prefer the Calming Lavender but it also comes in other scents such as Overtired & Cranky (and really, who isn’t?), Light & Happy (I just ordered this), Colds & Flu (perfect for kids with the sniffles… it has a nice eucalyptus scent that helps de-clog stuffy noses), Chamomile & Herbs, and I Love You which is a soft ylang ylang scent. The bubble baths foam well (they work even better with a little parental swishing assistance) and last long. They’re gentle and come with a bubble wand for a little extra fun. I reuse the bottles for regular play bubbles out in the yard.

Safe Mama Favorites: If I may be so bold, there are two products they make that I cannot, will not, and neevr will live without as long as I am diapering someone. The California Baby Non-Burning & Calming Diaper Area Wash and California Baby Calming Diaper Rash Cream. I am not blowing smoke up your behind here. Since the day my son was born these two items have SAVED me. Changing a poop diaper is gross, we all know that. With their diaper area spray, once you have the mess cleaned up, a few spritzes of this and they are clean as a whistle. It also helped us combat diaper rash. We didn’t experience much diaper rash until he was much older and I attribute it to the diaper wash. It helped us keep him cleaner and protected his little bum from germies. Any diaper rash we did encounter was cleared up practically overnight with the Calming Diaper Rash Cream. I kid you not. This is gross but once time, my son pooped in his sleep and I didn’t know. The next morning he woke up in some pain with a bad rash. After cleanup and a healthy few doses of rash cream and he was good as new. I rarely go on and on about a product, but in this case I really just adore this product. I give both of these products to every newly pregnant friend I know.

California Baby provides various creams and lotions for your little bundle ranging from everyday, which goes on light and solves most rough skin problems, to thick, which can help combat eczema. We get a little of that on our ankles and feet in the winter and a few swabs of California Baby Calendula Cream and our problems are solved.

Gripes: My only gripe with any of the California Baby line is the sunblocks. I’ve used their SPF 30+ Sunscreen Lotion and honestly it’s a little too thick. I slathered it on Reilly and it never really soaks in so everything sticks to him and it gave him this blueish ghostly look that was a little weird. However, they now have their sunscreens in SPF 18 Lotions that come with a pump so they might apply better. I’ll have to give them a try.

California Baby® gets a 5 star Safe Mama Stamp of Approval. You can find some of the California Baby line in Target, some grocery stores and in health food stores, but to get any and all of their fabulous products, visit them online: California Baby.

Okay, I think you’ve really sold me on this product! I have, for a LONG, time been trying to justify the price of their products. I am totally taking your word for it and going out to buy some!

Hi there, I know this is a bit late, but I was excited to check out California Baby and then…dismayed to find parabens lurking in there. The exact ingredients aren’t listed on their website, but over at MotherNature.com (where I was going to purchase them) the ingredients are detailed and even for the Super Sensitive baby wash, include “Very Small Amount (.15%) of Food Grade Methyl/Propylparaben.” (Full details at: http://www.mothernature.com/shop/detail.cfm/sku/89422/S/10000).
Even though it’s a small amount, other companies are able to make their products without parabens entirely, so I’m going to try a different product. Just thought you’d like to know!

    Hi Tamar,

California Baby reformulated in 2005 and removed parabens from their
    ingredients on all products:
    http://californiababy.com/ingredients.html

    * At the beginning of 2005, California Baby(R) reformulated all
products and removed parabens from our ingredients. Please note that
we are still updating our labels so some reformulated products may
have labels that do not reflect this change. Our products are run in
small batches and turnover very quickly. We feel confident that our
products in the marketplace are paraben free.

    Thanks for reading!

    Kathy
