My family was prette freaked out by the BPA thing too! It's a good thing that I am breastfeeding. I am also relieved that the storage bags are BPA free.

Has anyone heard about the Gerber manual breast pump containing BPA? They also use the #7 plastic (which is clearly indicated on the bottom of the bottle but not anywhere else) on their pumps. Any news?

Thanks for all the great info about BPA!

Thanks for the article. I take my son to daycare 3x/wk and they do not allow glass containers so I buy Gerber's organics. When I started researching what the #7 recycle symbol meant I was shocked to see baby food in #7 containers.

I am relieved that Gerber places their food in bpa free containers. This will cut down on my prep time of opening an organic glass baby food jar and then dumping it into a bpa free plastic container for daycare.

Thanks

Thank you for this! I rarely use gerber so, it hasn't been an issue before this morning. I picked up a 2 pack of apples & cherries for my DD to mix with her cereal. I was mortified AFTER I finished deeding her when I saw the "7" on the bottom of the package! I had warmed up it in the micro and everything....gaaah! I thought "how could they say ok to microwave when it's a 7???!!!" While I'm still not completely convinced it's ok to do, I'm not freaking out like I was at first. Why would they use a 7 anyway? hmm

I have called Gerber and they disclosed the following:
#2 POLYETHYLENE used in the inside of the plastic baby food containers
#6 POLYSTYRENE used only on the outside coating,it will not leach in,according to them
#1 used in sealing the aluminum lid to the container.
Another interesting fact is the Gerber Gentle Flow bottle, the wide one, without BPA will fit the Avent nipples.Avent bottles have BPA ,but the nipples on them do not,to my knowledge.

I contacted Gerber on this on 2 occassions and they indicated to me that their containers were made of #2 and #6, NOT #1 and #2 as you state. Someone else on my blog also called and they told her the same thing -- #2 and #6. #6 is one that you want to avoid!! I wanted to let you know because it seems that somewhere there is some confusion. And it seems to be on Gerber's end if your information also came from them.

I stopped using the Gerber foods b/c I assumed the #7 plastic was bad. I'm glad to see that they are safe, and I hope that the same is true for their toddler juice single serving size bottles.
