I was tipped off by a reader (thanks Annilee!) about new developments from Handi-Craft, the makers of Dr. Brown’s bottles. I confirmed with the company too and then later noticed it posted on their website.
Before catching wind of this BPA business, I used Dr. Browns polycarbonate bottles for months. I wish I would have known and had the option to choose a Polypropylene alternative then. Mom’s will be able to choose polypropylene bottles (a BPA free plastic) over the polycarbonate bottles this spring. Yay! Below is an excerpt from an email sent to us by a Handi Craft rep:
Dr. Brown’s Natural Flow is extending its baby bottle product offerings to include bottles made of three different materials – glass, polycarbonate plastic, and polypropylene plastic. All three bottle types will maintain the unique internal vent system that makes Dr. Brown’s bottles popular with parents and babies. Polycarbonate bottles are available now, glass bottles are available in January, and polypropylene will be available in the spring of 2008. …
Glass and polypropylene plastic bottles will join our polycarbonate bottles, and all three types will be sold at retail.

how about other parts of the bottle such as the vent system? what are they made out of?
The internal vent system is made of polypropylene (BPA Free)
Are they going to make glass and polypropylene wide-neck bottles too? Everything I’ve read so far about their expanded options and the glass bottles I’ve seen are the standard size.
This is great news, isn’t it? They promised us this in November but a lot of companies make promises they don’t deliver on, and Dr. Brown’s has actually been beating their initial schedule.
The Dr. Brown’s folks also told us a few days ago when we were collecting info for the third edition of our Z Report on BPA (published yesterday!) that they would consider making their training cup in non-polycarbonate as well if enough parents seemed to want it.
We know you’re out there – call 800-778-9001 and ask for Scott Rhodes, the head of Consumer Relations, to tell him if that would make the difference for you in buying that product. J’s mom, you could also ask him about the widenecks – we haven’t heard of any plans for it but that would certainly be a good more for them!
Fabulous news. It almost feels like a victory!
I just got off the phone with Dr. Brown’s and they said they expect the polypropylene bottles to be available in late April or early May. Keep your fingers crossed!
I called Dr. Brown’s today for an update and they told me that the polypropylene bottles should be available in Babies R Us by April 15th.
